Excerpt
Chapter One
Flashing lights broke Liam out of his gloomy thoughts. The tow truck headed toward him, then did a U-turn and pulled in front of Liam’s car, backing up until it was close enough to hook up the Honda.
The truck driver got out and walked toward Liam, who reluctantly got out of the car. Even though he had called for assistance and it was clear the stranger was a legitimate responder, Liam couldn’t help feeling jittery, with his hands sweating, and heart thumping.
Those reactions doubled when he got a good look at the driver.
Oh, just shoot me now. Fuck my life. Why did he have to be so fine?
In the glare of the truck’s spotlights, Liam made out all the important details. The man had broad shoulders, strong arms, powerful legs, and a solid chest, standing a good five inches or more over Liam’s five-foot-seven frame. Liam had thought he might be saved if the driver was ugly as sin, but he was out of luck. His face was as utterly lickable as the rest of him.
“You called for a tow? Mr. Reynard?”
Liam nodded.
“I’m Russell Lowe—everyone calls me Russ. I own Lowe’s Auto Shop in Fox Hollow, and tonight I’m your personal tow truck driver,” he said with a broad smile and dimples. The man’s sharp cheekbones, full lips, and strong chin were highlighted by dark brown scruff. Liam’s gaze traveled upward, surprised at gray hair flecked with brown framing a face that couldn’t be older than thirty-five. Green eyes made Liam wonder what kind of shifter Russ might be.
He swallowed hard and might have blushed when he realized Russ seemed to be checking him out too. No matter how attractive his roadside savior might be, Liam’d had enough man trouble to last an eternity, and he sure didn’t need more in a new town.
“Yes, I’m Liam Reynard. Just Liam,” he said, wishing he could conjure up the natural charm that had always served him well in community theater performances. His fox could be quite dramatic. But now, on the run, scared for his life, and in the dark with a stranger in the middle of nowhere, he couldn’t muster his usual flair.
“The engine started making strange noises, and I pulled off. I didn’t want to break anything.” Liam cringed because heknew next to nothing about cars. Admitting that takes points off my “man score,” doesn’t it? Then again, so does being a sports-hating, gay fox shifter twink.
Well, at thirty, I’d thought my twink days were behind me. But when he compared his own shorter, lithe, dancer build to the solid man-mountain in front of him? Yeah, twink still fits.
“I’m glad you stopped the car without waiting for the car to stop you.” Russ finally shifted his attention away from Liam and focused on the Civic. “Let’s get the tow set up, and then you can ride in the cab with me to Fox Hollow.”

Q:Tell us a little about yourself and your writing goals.
A: I decided that I wanted to write
books when I was 14. It took longer than I expected to make that happen, but
now I am a full-time writer (along with my husband), so I’m all about the
books!
Q: Congratulations
on your new release. Please tell us a little bit about it. What’s your favorite
aspect or part of the story? Do you have a favorite character? Who/Why?
A: Huntsman is the first book in the
Fox Hollow Zodiac series, which is a shifter fated mates MM paranormal romance
(no MPREG and no A/B/O). I had a blast writing it especially because of the
internal dialogue between the two main characters and their animal-selves.
It’s set in the Adirondack Mountains
of New York, where I grew up going camping. I absolutely love that area, so it’s
fun to be able to mentally revisit it, even if I can’t go back right now. The
main characters of whatever book I’m currently working on are my favorites!

Q: Do deadlines motivate you or block
you? How do you deal with them?
A: Deadlines *organize* me. I take
things in the order in which they’re on fire, and if there is no pressing
urgency/deadline, then I fill in with what else needs to be done. So I create
my own deadlines, but I also respond well to deadlines on projects because it
helps be sequence what needs to be done.
Q: Do you schedule a certain amount of
time for writing each day/week, or do you just work it in when you can? Would
you like to change this, or does your current method work well for you?
A: I write full time and this is our
livelihood, so I write every day, shooting for between 10 - 20 pages/day. It
goes back to those deadlines you asked about—I do my best to stay on schedule
and on deadline.
Q: What was the most difficult part of
writing this book? Why?
A: There’s always research involved
with any book, so while it wasn’t really ‘hard’, I did have to stop at points
and make sure I was reasonably accurate about real-world foxes and wolves, and
to fact-check what I wrote about the Fox Sisters and the Spiritualist Movement.
I don’t mind, because research is fun and that’s where I get great ideas!
Q: How do you develop a story idea? Do
you always use the same method? Specifically, which do you develop first in
your story building, the characters or the plot?
A: It all depends on the series.
Sometimes I get the place in mind, and then have to think up which characters
and plot would naturally happen there. In other cases, I get the characters and
have to brainstorm around where they would have come from. Same with when the
plot shows up first—I have to work through where it needs to happen and who
would be the right main characters. Sometimes (rarely) I get all three at once,
which is a godsend! Usually I get bits and pieces of the three and have to fill
in the blanks.
Q: What are your favorite genres when
it comes to your own pleasure reading? Do you prefer to read ebooks or print?
A: I love to read urban and epic
fantasy, paranormal mystery and of course, paranormal MM romance. I read a lot
of research books in print because it’s easier to mark interesting items and come
back to them. I’ve moved to doing most of my fun reading on ebook because it’s
more convenient and easier to take with me.
Q: Does writing energize or exhaust
you?
A: Writing can be tiring, especially
if I’m working out something that isn’t clear to me yet. But of all the jobs I’ve
ever had, I love writing the best, even on the worst days. It doesn’t
emotionally exhaust me, although I might get brain-tired from thinking.
Overall, it energizes me. I get cranky if I have to go without writing!
Q: What is your writing Kryptonite?
A: First books in new series always
take longer because you have to figure out everything as you go. So not exactly
‘Kryptonite’, but those definitely come together more slowly! Doing a book in
an existing series is like coming back to visit old friends!
Q: If you could tell your younger
writing self anything, what would it be?
A: “It will happen—it just takes
longer than you expect.”
Q: What is the best money you ever
spent as an author?
A: A good computer, a comfortable
chair, and lots of coffee!
Q: What did you edit out of
this book?
A: I don’t usually have big deleted
scenes—that’s the power of good outline. In general, I edit out places where I’ve
explained something that was already explained elsewhere, or where something
slows down the pace. I also seem to overuse a different word in each book, so I’ve
got to figure out what the word du jour is for this book, then do a search and
replace to cut down on the usage!
Q: How do you select the names of your
characters?
A: I know their ages, so I go to the
lists of most popular baby names for that year. I’ll also look at popular baby
names for particular countries or ethnicities depending on the character.
Sometimes I need a regional name, so I’ll go looking for that, or a name linked
to history or literature. I’ll also look at name meanings. Names are fun!
Q: What were your goals for this book?
Did you achieve them?
A: I really enjoy shifter romance, so
I wanted to get in on the fun. Readers have been very welcoming to Huntsman, so
I think it’s gone over well.
Q: What do you think about when you’re
alone in your car?
A: Whatever scene I need to write
next!
Q: What were you like in high school?
A: I was the nerdy kid who loved Star
Trek, Star Wars, stories about ghosts and vampires and anything spooky! I was
the one who told everyone she was going to write books when she grew up.
Q: What are the three best things
about you?
A: I’m persistent, curious and
generally optimistic.
Q: What was your favorite toy growing
up?
A: A book!
Q: What is your favorite ice cream
flavor?
A: Anything with caramel!
Q: If you could time-travel, where
would you go?
A: I’d go back to 2019 and take a
longer beach vacation, since I didn’t get to go this year!
