Davey’s Rule #83: Daddy will encourage his boy to be the best he can be and be supportive of his boy’s career choices.

Marcus Alves has waited most of his adult life to find the perfect match. A sweetheart who will love cuddles, need a Daddy to help him thrive, and most importantly… be the type of boy that might want to use the binky that Marcus keeps hidden in his pocket. Now in his forties, he’s refusing to give up on his dream—or the unused playroom that’s waiting for someone to enjoy.

Jeff Robustelli has had a rough life. Growing up in a commune with absent parents was hard for a rule-following straitlaced guy with a genius IQ. When the uncle who saved him died, Jeff did what he does best—buried his head in the sand and pretended life wasn’t changing. Working in a Daddy club has shown him what he really wants, but Jeff is too afraid to take a chance on something new.

When Jeff has a sudden need for a fake fiancé, he strikes a deal with the older man who always seems to be there when his world is crumbling and makes him feel safe. In exchange, he agrees to a fake Daddy/boy experiment designed to let him try out being little without any pressure.

While Marcus and Jeff navigate their “deal” and the unexpected new feelings that begin to emerge, Marcus also must help the younger man through a series of life changes that put him on the road to being the adult he’s been too afraid to be. When everything in Jeff’s life is in turmoil, Marcus is his one stability. But can Jeff trust his own heart when nothing else in his life is making sense anymore?

This is the fifth book in a series about not-so-perfect Daddies, adorable “boys,” and one sassy brat with an insane list of rules. Grab your fan and tissues because this series comes with both a high heat advisory and all the squishy feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book.

My heart raced with excitement as I thought about the surprise I'd left for him among the coloring books. "How about we start easy? First off, I would like to call you Jeffy when we're together like this. Is that okay?"

He seemed to consider that for a moment, his lips silently forming the little name a few times before finally nodding. "Jeffy. I like that because it's not too different from normal but sets me apart when I'm being…" He paused, lowering his voice to a whisper as he finished his sentence. "Little. It sets me apart when I’m little." He was so earnest and sweet that I wanted to eat him up.

"Good boy. Thank you. The name suits you, Jeffy. Now, why don't you look down on the bottom shelf and choose a coloring book? There is also a plastic box filled with crayons that you'll want to use."

Jeffy licked his lips and hesitated for half a second before crouching and carefully examining the stack of coloring books. I held my breath as I waited for him to get to the bottom. Somehow, I thought I was safe ignoring Davey's advice about not having Jeff make choices when I'd hidden the perfect surprise for him. It only took a few moments as he neatly slid each book from the top of the stack and moved it to the bottom while he carefully examined each one. I knew when he found it because he blew out his breath so fast that it whistled through his front teeth.

He looked up at me with shining eyes and held the coloring book high like a trophy. "Transformers? You have a Transformers coloring book? And I can use it?"

I couldn't help but chuckle. "Not only can you use it, but I got it especially for you. Why don't you look at the plastic box beside them now? That was also chosen just for you."

He picked up the blue box with the metallic logo, and the smile I got was worth the time I’d spent searching online for the Transformers pencil box. After he put the other coloring books back on the shelf—taking a moment to meticulously straighten them first—Jeffy stood, hugging his prizes to his chest. He still looked like he had half a mind to take off at the slightest provocation, but he wasn't looking quite as overwhelmed as he had a few minutes ago.

After a sleepless night spent tossing and turning, I was up with the sun. Cameron came down right as I was pouring the fruit compote over a Belgian waffle. I noticed the backpack on his shoulder right off the bat.
His stomach growled—loudly—but he ignored it as he met my eyes. "I'm going to get out of your hair now. I just wanted to thank you for taking me in last night. I looked out the window and it's not raining right now, so I should be okay." Shaking my head, I pointed to the island. "Drop your bag and come have breakfast. I didn't cook all this just for me, did I?" My chest fluttered when he instantly obeyed. His cheeks were pink as he climbed onto the stool. "Sorry, I just didn't want to assume or impose. I thought you might be sick of me by now. But I suppose it won't hurt to stick around long enough to have breakfast, especially since you went to so much work." "You’re not imposing at all. It's nice to have a little company in the house." I figured we would discuss his leaving later. First… food. "Wow, that's a beautiful compote. You reduced it perfectly, I won't even need syrup." Cameron smiled brightly as he looked at the plate I set in front of him. There were already platters of scrambled eggs and bacon on the counter, along with a container of freshly squeezed orange juice. I might have been a little too busy. "I just hope you like waffles." I spoke casually, setting a carafe of coffee on the counter along with a container of cream and cups for each of us. "I wasn't sure if you drink coffee or not. If not, that just means there'll be more for me." His eyes were closed as he moaned around his first bite of waffle. I wasn't sure whether to be pleased or turned on. Maybe a bit of both? After he swallowed, his eyes popped open and he reached for the coffee. "I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I don't hate it. Especially with a rich breakfast like this, I’ll definitely want coffee today."

I tried not to react. I wasn't entirely sure if I wasn’t reading things wrong. The last thing I wanted was for him to feel pressured. I drummed my fingers on the table for a second or two. "So after our excursion last night, I couldn't help but notice something important was missing when we got home. Do you know what I'm referring to?"

"The fact that yours is the only house on the block with no lights? I mean, if I didn't know better I would think that Scrooge lived there." The honeyed notes in his whiskey brown eyes sparkled mischievously. The forest green sweater complimented him perfectly, bringing out the coppery notes in his hair and those eyes. It was no wonder I couldn't keep my eyes off him.

I forced myself to stay on topic and quit checking him out. "I had an idea to fix that, if you're interested. But I should probably warn you, it involves another shopping spree."

Cameron bounced in his seat, doing another one of his chair dances where he swayed his shoulders from side to side and snapped his fingers over his head. So damned cute. "If the shopping spree involves decorating your house, I'm definitely in. But only if we’re doing it both inside and out. No offense, but do you have any idea how depressing it is that you don't have a Christmas tree?"

I gasped dramatically, playfully putting my hands to my cheeks like that kid in Home Alone as I teased the boy. "We can't have that, can we? So yes, if you're in, then I vote we spend the next few hours getting our Christmas on." I held up my phone and admitted a small truth. "We don't need to decorate the outside though, I hired someone this morning to go by and string up lights. They should be up by the time we get back."

Shaking his head, Cameron looked disappointed in me as he clucked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. "I get that you're a super busy lawyer and all, but that's totally cheating. Just for that, I'm going to make you by the biggest, tackiest blowup lawn ornament that we can find. That's the only way I'll accept hiring someone to hang generic, boring, perfectly spaced lights around your house."

Channeling my son, I playfully stuck my lower lip out to tease him. "Does it help if I also requested the lights look like icicles? And that I told him I want the house completely covered on every side?"

"That depends, are you going to let me buy the blowup ornament for the lawn?" God, he was adorable when he was sassy. I had to admit that I liked that Cameron was feeling comfortable enough with me to tease.

I flagged the waitress down, motioning for the bill. "Sold. But we better get out of here if we're going to get everything on my list." When Cameron started humming Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, I almost wanted to do one of his chair dances myself.

My back was rigid and my nostrils flared, but I bit my tongue and kept any arguments to myself. If a little water splashed out of the bucket when I jerked it from his hand, that wasn't my fault. The rinsing process went a lot faster than the washing, mostly because I had a better idea of what I was doing this time. Once again, Daddy stood there jerking himself off while I worked.
Seriously? What was his malfunction? Did he think I had a humiliation kink? I really needed to set him straight one of these days. Just… yeah. Probably not today.
As I worked my way back toward the front of the bathroom, I thought of ways to get even. When I got close enough to the sink that I spotted his toothbrush sitting in the holder, I knew what I wanted to do. Every so often, I'd noticed that he'd close his eyes for a moment or so while he was jerking himself. I timed it so the next time his eyes closed, I rose to my knees and grabbed his toothbrush in a flash.
Thanks to my seriously awesome poker face, I was able to keep from grinning when he opened his eyes to see me scrubbing the grout between the tiles with his toothbrush. He watched me for several seconds before he began chuckling under his breath. "While I like to see you thinking on your feet, perhaps my personal toothbrush wasn't the best choice of cleaning tools? How will I ever get toothpaste into my mouth now? This is a problem, don’t you think? Hmm. Stand up, brat. Drop my toothbrush in the wastebasket and bend over the counter."
Oooh. Bend over the counter? Yes, please. This could only mean good things, right?
I was practically vibrating with excitement when he walked over and stood behind me. I'd leaned over the end of the long marble counter and stretched forward over its length. But thanks to the mirror, I was able to see him clearly when I glanced to my left. I gulped and started to jerk up when I saw him reach for the toothpaste. Shaking my head, I started to point out his mistake when he held me in place with his other hand.

When Davey looked like he was feeling sorry for me as he passed my drink over with an overly nice smile, it was all I could do not to grab the glass and throw it at him. Or toss its contents all over the Daddies. Either way, it would be equally satisfactory. Instead, I forced myself to take a polite sip and pretend their words were just bouncing off me. "Excuse me, I'm sitting right here. I find it funny that you’re talking about me like I'm the bitchiest bitch ever to bitch while you're sitting there rudely discussing me."
Bryan made a humming sound, completely ignoring me as he turned to Marcus. "I don't know, I think it could be done if the right person were to take on the challenge."
Marcus's eyes bugged out. "Do you really think so? You're a better man than me, because I don't think it's possible."
I turned to Raphael. "You see me, right? I haven't gone invisible? I'm literally sitting right here, aren't I?"
The look of pity disappeared from Davey's eyes when he started snickering. "Maybe if you weren't such a little jerk, people would acknowledge your existence. Just saying." I stuck my tongue out at Davey, then blushed when I noticed Bryan giving me a measuring glance.
I sat up a little straighter when he leaned out to the side and craned his head while he gave me a slow up-and-down. A few seconds later, he sat back up and turned to Marcus. "I don't know, man. I might have to kick the tires, but I think this old junker could be rehabilitated."
"Excuse you, who are you calling old? Puh-lease. You're the one that's old. What are you, pushing forty? Twenty-five is hardly old."
Raphael frowned at me. "Aging yourself, boy? You and I both know how old you are."
I rolled my eyes then immediately blushed all over again when I realized that everybody was looking at me. Raphael winked and popped a finger gun at the champagne glass. "Calm down, cutie. I know damn well it's your birthday. Why do you think I told Davey to pour you a glass of the good stuff? Hold on, I forgot something." He bent over and fussed with something under the bar before coming back up with a party hat. He set the paper cone on top of my head and fastened the elastic string under my chin like I was seven years old.
It’s stupid how good that silly act made me feel.
Raphael was humming the birthday song as he motioned to Davey. "When this glass is empty, top it off. Keep it flowing, it isn't every day that a guy turns a quarter of a century." Davey smiled a little more kindly at me and murmured “Happy birthday” before turning to greet a customer that had walked up.
Nobody else acknowledged the exchange and the Daddies went back to their conversation. Andrew must’ve been feeling brave, because he looked around Bryan to give me a once-over himself before turning back to their conversation. "So let me see if I have this right. You think that you have what it takes to turn him into a decent boy? What kind of timeframe are we looking at here? I mean, look at him. He's not hard on the eyes. It's the ears that get hurt when he starts with that mouth."
"Hey, be nice." Raphael immediately came to my defense. "It's the boy's birthday. It's one thing to joke around, but you guys are straddling the border of bullying. Take it down a notch."
Marcus snorted. "What, are we supposed to forgive his rudeness the rest of the year because it's his birthday?"
Andrew really must have thought he was hot shit with the other Daddies sitting there, because he tested my resolve to not tell the truth of the bathroom story. "And can we all just take a moment to remember how he ran off with my clothes a few months ago?"
Nope, I definitely wasn't touching that one. Not on my birthday. Nope. Not today, Satan. Let's just say that Andrew was a man I wouldn't touch with a stray dog's dick—I wasn't into animal cruelty. Asshat.
I tapped Bryan's arm. "Go ahead, answer Marcus's question. I'm curious. If you're such a fabulous makeover artist and I'm nothing but a rusty junkyard heap of crap, how long would it take you to turn me into a rehabilitated boy that any Daddy would want on his arm?"
Bryan glanced at me with a cocky smirk. "Please. I could turn you into a decent boy within three months. Ninety days with me and I’d wager that any Daddy in this place would be proud to have you as his boy, Preston."
Marcus snorted so hard he sprayed whiskey through his nose. "Impossible. It couldn't be done. Especially not in that short of a timeframe."
"If I say I can do it, then you can take my word for it that it's possible." Bryan motioned for a refill on his beer, tossing me a wink in the process.
Marcus drummed his fingers on the counter, looking me over with a thoughtful frown. He shifted his eyes to Bryan and began slowly nodding. "You know what? Okay. Prove it. I dare you. Put your money where your mouth is, Bryan. I'm willing to bet you can't make this brat into a decent boy within ninety days."
Bryan leaned back on the barstool, crossing his arms over his chest as he turned his head from left to right to look at first me, then Marcus. "Name your terms, Marcus. I've never backed away from a bet."
I started getting irritated as the old musical My Fair Lady suddenly played through my head, and I slammed my palm down on the bar. "What? Hell, no! If you think you're going to do some sort of Eliza Doolittle action with me, then you've got another think coming."
Davey cracked up and grabbed a broom. He started dancing behind the bar, pretending the broom was his partner as he sang “I Could Have Danced All Night.” That is, he did until Raph took the broom and held his hand out instead. Davey took it and let Raphael swirl him around the bar area while he lifted his knees higher and attempted a tango as he switched songs.

Former Federal Agent Yuri Sorenson had left the bureau behind to become a private investigator. His ex-partner came to him asking for a favor, not knowing who else to trust. Yuri had always had a way of keeping his emotional distance from the people he protected, yet that changed the day Clarkson hesitantly limped into his life.

What happens when love is confused with pain? That’s the exact question Josh Clarkson had asked himself for years. He’d grown up in an overburdened foster care system, and from what he knew of love, he couldn’t expect anything but to be something tolerated. Was he meant to be more than a plaything or a piece of scenery? H could hope.

Two men who know nothing but being broken find that patience and acceptance are harder than losing hope. Is the leap of faith worth the reward of letting someone else in? Maybe they’ll find the strength to find out before the danger of Josh’s past tries to tear them apart.

I awakened from the best dreams I'd ever had. One of the few times I hadn't come to with a scream and then I froze as I found myself draped over Yuri. My thighs on either side of his hips and I tried to slip to the side without being noticed only to squeak as a very strong, large hand squeezed my ass to keep me in place. This was so not good. I bit my lip and tried again only to be stopped by a deep growl that rumbled the chest under me.
All I remembered last night was falling asleep as far on the other side of the bed as I could get. I'd never really shared a bed with someone before. Usually when the man I was with went to sleep, I left or found a couch or a portion of the floor to curl up on. At Vernon's I had my own tiny room which he locked me in every night.
This was the first time I'd ever cuddled with a man and I wasn't sure it was a welcomed act. I needed to get away before he woke up. His opinion was important and I didn't want him to think that I'd done this on purpose. I planted my hands beside his ribs, and then lifted onto my toes.
I was able to get an inch between our bodies before my hips were slammed back down onto a very impressive bulge.
"Shit." I whispered and started the attempt again.
"Baby boy, what do you think you're doing?"
His gruff question had me lifting my gaze to his and realized he was very much awake. "How long have you been awake?"
"Maybe an hour or so."
"Sorry, I didn't realize—" My apology ended when I noticed the corner of his mouth pulled into a smirk. It made the laugh lines at the corners of his eyes deeper.
"Sleeping you didn't seem to mind rubbing on me."
I surged to a seated position and stared down at him. "I was sleeping. I could've done anything." His smile got wider. "What else did I do?"
"Nothing, but we have shit to do today so get on up."
He smacked my ass and rolled out from under me, dumping me onto the bed. I hurriedly crawled off  and followed him. I was too shocked by the grin and the suddenly playful attitude to protest the swat.
"What did I do," I demanded.
"You get pretty affectionate, now, are you going to watch me piss and demand to know every grope you didn't get to enjoy?"

BLURB

When Kel Taylor’s life changes irrevocably, he finds himself alone in the world. He might have rebelled a little against his parents, but that didn’t mean he was ready to lose them. Unable to cope with his grief and feelings of guilt, he turns to booze, but before he hits rock bottom, someone dives into the murky waters to save him.

Luc Bryant watched Kel grow from the little kid whose football broke a pane in his greenhouse, into the sexy young man who sent heat racing through him. That was when Luc stopped watching and distanced himself, because he didn’t want to be that kind of a man. And that’s how things continued, until he saw to what depths the boy had sunk. Luc will be damned if he’ll let Kel kill himself. What Kel needs is a friend, and Luc’s shoulders are plenty big enough to bear his burdens. Kel doesn’t need a friend. He needs a pair of strong arms to hold him, a broad chest to curl up against, someone to listen to him, someone who cares for him… and a whole lot more. What he needs is a Daddy. He just doesn’t know it yet. A stand-alone book that contains an age gap relationship between a sexy daddy and a virgin.

EXCERPT

The time for worrying about Kel had long past. Luc had to do something.
After the funeral, he’d kept his promise and checked in on the boy regularly, and at first it had looked like Kel was coming through this. At least, Luc assumed he was. He didn’t get to see Kel all that much, but their brief conversations over the property boundary were proof that Kel was alive and well, if looking a little thin.

Then the conversations dwindled, as did the phone calls. Kel politely refused Luc’s invitations to eat with him. He refused Luc’s offers of assistance. And lately there had been far too many occasions when Kel didn’t answer his phone. No reply to texts. When Luc had ventured across to knock at the door, there had been no answer. Of course, he could have been out, but somehow Luc doubted that. When April gave way to May, Luc’s disquiet increased.

There were signs of life at the house next door, however. Walmart trucks came and went, and more than once, Luc dashed out to catch Kel before he closed the front door, but he was never fast enough.

Almost as though the boy was avoiding him, which if it were true, would be extremely ironic.

The day arrived when Luc wasn’t content to sit back anymore and wait for something to happen. It was time for the last resort—and that meant Christine’s spare key, the one he’d never gotten around to giving back to Kel. Thank God.

Luc grabbed it from the hook in the kitchen where he kept his keys, and went out of the house. Kel’s car was in the driveway, and judging by the state of the ground beneath it, Kel hadn’t moved it for a while. That only added to Luc’s sense of foreboding.

He went around to the front door, not bothering to ring the bell. After weeks of his knocks going unanswered, there seemed little point. Luc inserted the key into the lock, praying there wasn’t a chain attached on the other side. Thankfully, the door opened, and Luc stepped quietly into the silent interior. He peered into the sitting room, then the dining room, but there was no sign of Kel. When he entered the kitchen, the sight was enough to stop him in his tracks.

Dishes were piled high on every countertop. The dishwasher door was open, and Luc peeked inside. It was full of dirty dishes. The sink was full too, and the trash looked like it hadn’t been taken out for weeks.

Luc noted the pizza boxes and take-out cartons. At least he’s eating something. It was only when he took a closer look at one corner of the kitchen that the full extent of the situation hit him.

Bottles. Lots and lots of empty bottles. And most of it was the hard stuff, Luc was dismayed to see. There were empty cans and bottles of hard cider, and bottles of wine too. It appeared as if Kel had drunk his way through the contents of a bar.

Dear God, what state is he in, if he’s drunk all that?

Luc checked the rest of the first floor, but there was still no sign. He paused at the foot of the stairs, his nostrils flaring. The smell of stale alcohol was very noticeable. Luc mounted the stairs, his heart pounding. This is not good. This is way worse than I thought. Already he was kicking himself for not charging in sooner.

When he reached the door to Kel’s room, Luc paused, steeling himself for whatever lay beyond it, and praying fervently that the boy hadn’t choked to death on his own vomit. He pushed open the door and heaved an internal sigh of relief at the sight that awaited him.

Kel was in his bed, only the top of his head visible above the comforter, but he was clearly breathing. The room was in semidarkness, and the reek of alcohol was at its strongest, accompanied by the smell of stale sweat. Luc crossed the floor, put his hand to the lump beneath the covers, and gave Kel a light shake.

Nothing.

Luc gave him a stronger shake, and Kel’s groggy voice shattered the quiet. “Wha?”

“Kel,” Luc said urgently. “It’s Luc.”

“Go ’way.”

Like Luc was going to do that. “No, I’m not going anywhere. Remember?” He slowly drew back the comforter, only to have Kel seize it from him and pull it back over himself. Half-closed brown eyes regarded him with incredulity.

“How’d you get in here?”

“I have a key. You mom gave it to me. Remember, she asked me to check on the house?”

Kel propped himself up on his elbows, and the comforter slid lower, revealing…

Well, I certainly didn’t expect that.

Kel had a tattoo, a pattern of black swirls and spikes that covered his right shoulder, his pec and came halfway down his upper arm. There was also a lot more body hair than Luc had been prepared for. Before Luc could utter another word, Kel set his jaw. “I want it back, then I want you to leave.”

Luc slowly shook his head. “No. You need help.”

Kel’s eyes blazed, and he sat bolt upright. “You. Need. To. Go. Now.”

“And let you keep doing this to yourself? Kel, you’re better than this.”

Kel’s jaw dropped, then he snapped it shut. “You need to go,” he repeated through gritted teeth. “I don’t want you seeing me like this. I’m a pathetic excuse for a human being. Help me? You couldn’t help me. I’m a hopeless case. I’m worse than useless.”

Luc’s stomach turned over. What the fuck had happened? “I have no idea where all this is coming from,” he said, doing his best to keep his voice even. “I know you, Kel. You’re nothing like the person you just described.”

Kel stared up at him, a dazed look in his eyes, his mouth open. “Know me? You don’t know me! Even my parents didn’t know me!” His chest rose and fell rapidly, his breathing harsh and staccato. “If they did, they’d have shunned me for the abomination that I am.”

Abomination? “Kel, I—”

I was not a good son!” Kel yelled, the cords of his neck standing out. “And if they’d seen into my heart, they’d have been horrified. I went against their teachings.” He brought his left hand down hard on his right pec, wincing. “This. This would have given them so much pain, and I still had it done, knowing that.” His eyes glistened. “And there was worse than this. So many things I wanted to tell them, but I couldn’t, because they’d have been so damned disappointed in me. And now it’s too late. They’re never going to know what I’m really like. And I can’t bear that.” Tears spilled over his cheeks, his shoulders shook, and he sobbed.

Luc knew what he was seeing. In an instant, he sat on the bed, drew back the comforter, and pulled Kel into his lap, his arms around him. It was no surprise when the boy threw his arms around Luc’s neck and buried his face in Luc’s chest, his knees up to his chest, harsh sobs racking his body. “It’s okay,” Luc whispered. “Let it out. It’s all right to let it out, Kel.” Hot tears soaked into his shirt.

“I… can’t… stop… it from… hurting…” Kel choked out between sobs.

“It’s supposed to hurt.” Luc held onto him, one arm around his back, the other around his legs, cradling him, aware of the tremors that jolted through Kel’s frame. “This is grief. You’ve held on to your emotions so tightly, but now you have to let go.”

Kel’s sobs increased in volume and frequency, and Luc remained silent, gently rocking him in his arms, a weeping young man dressed only in his briefs, curled up against Luc’s chest and clinging to him. Luc’s arms were full to capacity: Kel might have been shorter than him, but he’d obviously been working out at some point. Little by little the tears subsided, and Kel’s breathing became less erratic. Luc brought his rocking to a halt, his nose buried in Kel’s hair. Finally, Kel moved gingerly, as though embarrassed by his position.

Luc let go, and Kel sat on the bed beside him. He sniffed, then wiped a hand across his eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“You have nothing to apologize for. If you knew how long I’ve been waiting for you to show some emotion over their deaths….” Luc stroked Kel’s hair. “It’s perfectly normal. And nothing to be embarrassed about. Although….” Luc wrinkled his nose.

Kel swallowed. “I guess I smell a bit ripe, huh?”

“Just a little,” Luc lied. “Nothing a good shower wouldn’t put right. If you think you can stay upright for that long. You might be a little shaky on your legs.” He stood, and held out a hand to Kel, who took it and pulled himself to his feet. Luc watched him anxiously. “Well?”

Kel expelled a long shuddering breath. “I can manage a shower.”

Luc nodded in approval. “And while you’re doing that, I’ll go downstairs and make you something to eat.” He cocked his head to one side. “That’s assuming there’s food in your kitchen. Edible food.”

Kel bit his lip. “Yeah, about that…”

Luc rolled his eyes. “Get washed. I’ll go to my place and raid the refrigerator. Take as long as you like.”

For the first time since Luc had entered his room, there was a flash of the old Kel. “Is that Luc-speak for ‘you stink’?”

Luc laughed. “Shower, dirty boy. Then I’ll feed you. And then… we can talk.” He felt a good deal lighter. That had been a cathartic moment, and while Kel still had a way to go, the outlook was hopeful.

What puzzled him were a couple of things Kel had said. At this point Luc wasn’t sure if he was going to leave them for now, or bring them out into the open. Because sooner or later, they had to talk about them.

Research, or Falling Down The Rabbit Hole

One thing that never changes from book to book, is the amount of research it takes to write one.

You wouldn’t believe the things I have to look up.

As a for instance, I was writing about a funeral in Tennessee. I had to first find a cemetery, then look up what kind of flowers would be used in the ceremony. So that meant finding a local florist and clicking on Funeral Flowers.

Why bother?

Because you can bet one reader from Tennessee would either write to me, or post it in a review, that the flowers I had chosen were not available in that State or at that time.

I look up EVERYTHING.

For Kel’s Keeper, I had to work out where I was going to locate the book. Then find a suitable town. Then their houses, which are next door to each other. Then where they would shop for groceries. A local coffee shop. Movie theatre. Restaurants. Distances from Elon NC to Charlotte and Raleigh. I asked my Facebook friends which would be the best gay bars to go to in Raleigh.

When it came to kink, yeah, I looked that up too. But when you write BDSM, that’s kind of part of the territory.

Which is why it hurts when a reader complains that a book isn’t realistic.

Truth & Betrayal and Pride & Protection are both set in a real town in Tennessee. Trust me, I made sure I got my details correct. But I was writing about an interracial couple, and I wanted to make sure I got the local attitudes right. I found three readers who all knew what life in a small Tennessee town was like. One of them even went to that town.

In Pride & Protection, one of my MCs is a cop, and he has to deal with varying degrees of homophobia. You can be sure that before I wrote it, I asked my Tennessee readers if what I was writing was okay. When I got the thumbs up, I continued. When the book was released, I received a message from a reader. She wanted to know if I was from Tennessee. When I told her I was from the  UK, she was astonished. Why? Because to quote her, I had ‘nailed it’.

You can understand why that made me happy.

Until a review came out that stated I had presented my small Southern town in an unfair, bigoted light. Tennessee cops were not homophobic. Small town life was not like that.

Do you know what the rule is for authors when faced with such a review?

Do Not Engage.

So I didn’t.

My reader did. She wrote a reply – a very polite reply, I might add – that directed the reviewer to a real-life cop from a town 100 miles from mine, whose homophobic views were on public record.
Her reply was deleted. That’s fine. But I’m glad she wrote it just the same.

Another review for the same book suggested that my knowledge of bears probably came from me having a brunch with a twink, who told me what bears were.

Er….

Have you seen some of my friends? Seriously? Do you know who I hang out with?

Which is why none of my readers paid any attention whatsoever to that review – apart from my co-author, who couldn’t resist leaving a comment, bless him.

The Golden Rule for authors really is don’t read reviews. But the next time you read something and you think, ‘Is that right?’ there’s a very strong probability that it is. Authors like to get things right.
Even if sometimes when we’re researching something, it ends up sending us down the rabbit hole into areas we never intended going in the first place.

K.C. Wells started writing in 2012, although the idea of writing a novel had been in her head since she was a child. But after reading that first gay romance in 2009, she was hooked. She now writes full time, and the line of men in her head, clamouring to tell their story, is getting longer and longer. If the frequent visits by plot bunnies are anything to go by, that’s not about to change anytime soon.
