As La Vista Turns by Kris Ripper - Blog Tour with Giveaway

Hi, I'm Kris and welcome to the blog tour for As La Vista Turns, book five in my awesome queer soap opera! Enjoy the blog tour!

About As La Vista Turns

Zane Jaffe has almost lost track of what conception cycle she’s in. (That’s a lie: this is cycle thirteen.) She’s fake-dating her pal Mildred to get her best friend off her back, but judging by how hot it was when they accidentally kissed, her feelings might be somewhat less platonic than she’d thought.

And she’s decided that healing the fractured local queer community can only be accomplished through a party. Or maybe it’s actually a wake. Whatever it is, it’ll take place at Club Fred’s, and there will be alcohol.

Trying to conceive is an unholy rollercoaster of emotions, and Mildred won’t let them kiss again until Zane figures out how she feels. Between the wake (exhausting as hell, and that’s just the fun stuff), the constant up-down cycle of trying to get pregnant, and saving the world in the meantime, Zane has no idea. Fall in love with Mildred isn’t on her list, but maybe it’s time to let go of that rigid future she’s been working toward, and instead embrace the accidents that can lead to something better.

Pages or Words: 61,000 words

Categories: Fiction, Historical, Lesbian Romance, Romance

Excerpt:

Abby couldn’t remember falling asleep. She only remembered the dark night and how, outside the window of Della’s trailer, the rolling slopes of Eastern Ohio slowly flattened into the farmland of the western side of the state and faded into darkness. She didn’t say much during the trip, but her mind was spinning, unable to process what she had done.
Once, when she had been a little girl, barely older than Annette was now, her mother had taken her and Natale to visit their aunt in Chicago for a week. It had been a nice visit. They had embarked on the train with a great deal of ceremony, and Za Teresa had spoiled the pair rotten, loading them up with peach-shaped marzipan and pizzelle until they were both sick. She hadn’t left Cleveland for any extended period of time since. Oh, sure, she’d talked and dreamt about it. Nonna often wistfully mentioned taking a trip back to her girlhood home one more time now that the war was over and taking Abby along to look after her, and then, if her opera career took off as she had once hoped, she would be visiting all the great cities. In her scrapbook, clippings of Palais Garnier, La Scala, and The Met were decorated with carefully drawn hearts and hopeful stars and the scrawled word: someday. Still, she had never imagined that when she departed the Coventry neighborhood again, it would be in a burlesque dancer’s trailer.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Amy Stilgenbauer author of Sideshow.

Hi Amy, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Glad to be here! I’m a writer and history nerd from Michigan, who has a bunch of really hip hobbies like knitting, swing dancing, and genealogy. I grew up in a small town that had plenty of carnivals every summer and they fascinated me. I’m sure in many ways this novel grew out of that fascination. Sideshow is a work of historical fiction set in the late 1950s and follows the adventures of Abby Amaro and what happens to her when she runs away to join a traveling carnival.

1)      How do you develop your plots and characters?

It usually starts with a idea germ like “I want to write a story about a carnival” or “I want to explore big band music.” Then I sit down and I free write from there. Mostly what shows up at this step is nonsense, but eventually a soup of characters and settings start to form and I can pull specific stories out of it. Once I’ve settled on the direction I want to go and what I want to say, that’s when I begin  researching, outlining, and character sketching (literally for major characters. One of the crucial steps for me in getting to know a character is drawing them).

2)     Who doesn’t love a good hero? Tell us about your protagonist. Was there a real life inspiration behind them?

Abby is an absolute sweetheart. Insecure and anxiety ridden as she is, she always manages to use those feelings to propel herself forward and maintain an open vulnerability that I really admire. She is fictional and all her own person, but she is partially inspired by a number of amazing women from my own life who would have grown up in Abby’s world: including my own grandmothers, great aunts, and cousins.

3)     What real-life inspirations do you use when world building?

For Sideshow I was lucky to have a lot of real-life inspirations to build upon. I did a lot of research into real life carnivals throughout history and built upon them for the setting as well as the characters. For example: Suprema’s act was partially inspired by several famous historical strongwomen, such as Kate “Vulcana” Williams and Abbye Stockton and Della’s by the acrobat Lillian Leitzel. I also used a number of historical resources, including archives and oral history interviews, to envision what Cleveland and other locales the carnival stopped in would be like in the 1950s and what life would have been like for Abby growing up.

4)     Did you learn anything from this book and what was it?

I learned a ton of things while writing this book. Some of them were about writing such as “not all of your ideas need to be included. Some things can happen off screen. Aka streamline a few of those scenes.” Some were more historical. For example, did you know that the term recreational vehicle was not used to describe a trailer until the 1970s? Or that hot-air ballooning was not really a thing people did recreationally until the 1960s? I had envisioned a pivotal scene taking place in a hot air balloon at the beginning of the process, but scrapped it when we got into research. I still love the scene, though. Maybe another book.

5)     It’s your last meal on earth. What do you choose?

Pizza: New York Style, with artichoke hearts, onions, hot peppers, anchovies, and fresh mozzarella. This would be accompanied by a glass of dry red wine to drink and truffle fries. For dessert we’d have chocolate babka and an espresso, maybe some ice cream too. It’s my last meal on earth, so why not?

Excerpt from A Road Through Mountains

Cecily's heart thumped and her own fingertips began to tingle with a sudden jolt of adrenaline that coursed through her at the shock of recognition.
                Surely it couldn’t be…
The woman stopped talking, as if aware that guests had joined them in the room. She began to turn, revealing a creamy bronze face, and just a hint of freckles sprinkled across prominent cheek bones like a fine dusting of cinnamon. Her eyes shone with the brilliant blue of an Alaskan glacier in the afternoon sun.
In truth, the room was drenched in shadows and not a single detail of the woman's appearance was the slightest bit visible. It didn't have to be. Cecily saw it all vividly in her mind just the same. She knew without a doubt, once she managed to will her heart to stop racing and forced her eyes to look up, that the face looking back at her would most certainly belong to Rorie Mulloy.
Cecily silently cursed her luck. What were the odds? The very first time since college that she'd dared to venture backstage at a theater, and she found herself face to face with the reason she'd left in the first place.

It’s over.

Two simple words, intended to signify the end, were instead just the beginning. Jeya took a deep breath, and the pain that pierced her side served as the reminder she needed. She hit the send button. Unexpected relief instantly washed over her. “I did it. Step one. Now for step two.” Jeya placed her phone on the bed and stood up to double-check her suitcase. Going over the checklist in her mind, she felt confident that she had the essentials. A week away from home required more than she’d anticipated, but she had no intention of returning until the rainstorm had passed. Jeya took a second to acknowledge the double entendre of the word. Her girlfriend, Rayne, was definitely a hurricane. Her temper was unpredictable and left damage in its wake similar to that which Hurricane Gloria had. She knew she’d be safer at Roman’s house for the next several days.

The lyrics to “Dangerously in Love” cursed the air. The perfect ringtone to describe her relationship. She braced herself as she walked to the bed and picked up the phone. Jeya anticipated nothing less than an explosive response from her short-tempered girlfriend.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Renee Cronin, author of Fistful of Love.
Hi Renee, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

      1)  Tell us about your book.

Fistful of Love is a fictional story about intimate partner violence (IPV) in a same sex relationship between two women. The MC, Jeya decides to leave her partner Rayne. This is where the story begins. The rest of the book is about the aftermath of a decision to leave an abusive relationship, the impact of disclosing the abuse to loved ones and being torn between perceived love and trying to protect yourself.
It was also important for me to write a character that dispelled the myths about “what victims look like.” Jeya is educated, financially independent and a lesbian. Same sex domestic violence isn’t talked about. For whatever reason, it’s hard for people to understand that two women can be in a relationship and one of them become a victim of partner violence. It happens and I wanted to put that out there.

      2)  How difficult was it to get into the main character’s head?

It was more difficult than I anticipated. I talk about this is in my acknowledgements as well. At one point I felt blocked and couldn’t finish what I started because I hadn’t finished my own story. I hadn’t been honest about my own experience in a previous relationship and when I was able to acknowledge my past and accept it, I was able to move forward with Jeya. It still wasn’t easy, but definitely easier. Jeya’s not a complex character, but I was challenged in trying to find her flaw. She was hiding it.

      3)  Is this book a standalone or do you plan on visiting it again?

I definitely want to re-visit. I see a sequel in the future and maybe a novella. Jeya has more to tell. There is also a secondary couple in the book that keeps screaming at me to tell their story. The genre is not les fic. It would fall under the gay (men) romance. I’m excited to try my hand at that.

      4) Why did you choose to write F/F stories?

It’s what resonates with me. While I love to read and not necessarily only about stories that resemble some part of my life, writing is different. When I tell a story, it comes from a personal place, and I want to be as authentic as I can. Les fic makes sense to me. It doesn’t mean that I don’t want to try other genres. As I mentioned earlier, I want to write a story with gay male characters as the MC’s. What I love about writing is creating a world, using my imagination and having full control (well as much control as my characters allow). Sometimes as an author you think you are in the driver’s seat and before you know it, you’re making a U-turn, when you just wanted to go left.

      5) Where do you find your inspiration?

The world around me. I think about experiences I’ve had, experiences friends and family have had. I’m inspired by my emotions, or conversations I have with people. Sometimes I write because there’s a story I want to read. And someone has to write it!

Meet the author:

Renee Cronin is a self-professed devour of knowledge, and a voracious reader. She began writing in earnest in 2005, when the characters in her head became so loud she was forced to tell their stories, or risk getting swept away into the abyss of her imagination. Renee has since used writing as a personal outlet to express her feelings, ideas, views, thoughts, and opinions about the world and the issues that impact her on a deep personal and societal level. (And of course writing also quiets the voices in her head of the many characters that are yearning to have their stories told.) Renee’s inspiration to publish is in large part due to the overwhelming display of encouragement, and support from family and friends, who believe she has a gift with words that need to be shared with world. Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, she works in the social work field avidly advocating and supporting the varied needs of the people in her community. Renee is a bibliophile with a transcendent love for words. Her soul yearns for the acoustic stylings from a plethora of musical genres. As she continues on this journey of published author she hopes to keep her readers captivated and pining for more.
