Synopsis

Mark Cross is a junior in college working to pay his way through college while forgetting his troubles by partying and hooking up. He meets Scott and finds himself falling head over heels for a wealthy man who couldn’t be any further from his rural background. The mutual attraction is instant, but Mark, unwilling to put himself in a position where his heart is on the line, finds ways to bring up their upper-crust/working-class differences to torpedo their budding romance.

Scott Nolan feels old, even though he’s just thirty-four. Meeting Mark reinvigorates him and gives him a new sense of purpose. After a series of men who were only interested in his wealth and family background, he finally meets a man who doesn’t care about the family he comes from—in fact, Mark seems ready to blow everything up because he thinks they could never overcome their class differences. Scott must fight to show Mark that he doesn’t care about who has how much money, and what matters above all is that they could build something more together outside the bedroom.

Chapter One
“I don’t know about this, Val. I think we’ll be the oldest ones here.”

Val scanned the twenty-somethings milling around outside the club and shrugged. “I don’t think we look that old. I want a drink, and you need to get laid. You could clean in there!”

“The last thing I need is a clingy, barely legal twink calling me Daddy in bed. I already feel old; I don’t need someone else reminding me about it.” Scott ran a hand through his hair, conscious about any gray that might have been present.

“You’re thirty-four. You look great. And I know you need some stress relief from work. Why not take a virile young frat boy home?” She tugged at Scott’s arm. “Please. I need this. I haven’t been to a gay club in forever. I miss the drinks! The dancing! The eye candy! I feel like my vagina is going to grow shut from total lack of use, so I need the affirmation only sassy gay men can give. You’re always such a good time!”

One of his eyebrows quirked. “That sounds very reductive.” He looked down at their attire. His blue-and-white button-down had the sleeves rolled to his elbows and gray slacks. Val wore a tight purple dress. They were dressed more for date night than clubbing—which, given that they had just come from a recently well-reviewed Italian restaurant a couple of blocks away, made sense—and Scott felt that both their age and clothing gave away their un-hip demeanor.

Val tugged at his shirt. “I’ll be your wingwoman.”

Scott had to admit that she performed admirably in that capacity in years past. He sighed in resignation. “Fine.”

Val laughed and hugged him, then linked arms with him and practically dragged him to the bouncer.

Once inside, Scott remembered why he’d stopped going to clubs, gay or otherwise—the music was too loud, there were too many bodies stuffed into one place, and there seemed to be an increasing number of people who cared too much about taking the perfect club selfie (#squad #nofilter). He was certain he had never heard the bass-heavy song vibrating his organs before, and while he admitted to himself that the bartenders clad only in neon briefs helped ease his suffering by providing a target for him to home in on, Scott preferred the quiet ambiance of the Italian restaurant to the mass of humanity crowded before him.

Val pushed through the throngs to the bar, pulling Scott behind her, and flashed an impeccable smile at an equally impeccable specimen of man behind the bar. “Two vodka sours, please!” She turned to Scott and motioned at their bartender, who’d just turned around to show off a shapely ass hugged by neon purple. “Him?”

“No, Val, it’s okay. I don’t know if I even feel up to it.”

She poked him in the chest. “We are going to get some drinks and dance, and you are going to go home with someone, and if I can find a straight guy somewhere in here, then maybe I get to go home with someone too.”

The bartender placed their drinks in front of them, and Val handed him her card. “Keep the tab open. Thanks!” They took their drinks, and Val toasted Scott. “To not feeling old!”

“Just saying that makes us old!”

Val downed her glass in nearly one gulp; clearly, she thought alcohol was the fountain of youth. He merely sipped his. She leaned over the bar to flag the bartender down for another drink as Scott turned to survey the dance floor.

It all seemed to him like he was dropped in from another era. He knew that this was familiar, but it didn’t feel right. This scene was a young person’s game, and he no longer fit the bill. What did these children know of mortgages or 401(k) or how to donate to charity to have a better tax write-off at the end of the year? He was sure there were very few people he could relate to in the whole building, and certainly his friend next to him was angling to forget as much as she could about maternity leave and insurance as quickly as possible.

He thought about Val’s insistence on his sexual well-being. True, he hadn’t slept with anyone in a few weeks; work had taken care of that, and even though the workload was becoming more manageable, he didn’t feel like getting on an app to meet anyone to take care of that need. His hand and Pornhub served him well if he felt that he needed to take the edge off before heading to the office the following morning. Still, that didn’t stop him from picking out guys in the crowd he wouldn’t mind taking home.

A very young-looking man was out on the floor, dancing like no one was watching—but Scott was. He was hypnotized at the way he shook his head, his hips. He threw his arms in the air and didn’t seem to have a care in the world. It was mesmerizing, both because of the man’s attractiveness, and because Scott felt a stirring in his slacks. He downed more of his drink.

Another glass floated before Scott’s vision; Val wiggled it around. “Yoo-hoo! Here’s another one! You need to catch up!”

The unexpected arousal upon seeing the young man on the dance floor eased his apprehension at his situation; he clinked glasses with Val and also swallowed the new drink in one go.

Val slammed her empty glass on the bar and clutched Scott’s arm. “Let’s dance!”

He allowed himself to be led onto the dance floor, noting the glances from other men. Some undressed him with their eyes, but he didn’t want to meet their gazes; the alcohol was starting to work, and he wanted to locate the lithe dancer he saw earlier. There was no way to figure out where he was at the moment amongst all the people grinding away.

Val spun him to face her. “Come on! Don’t be shy!” She started dancing in a way that, at the most generous, could be described as “mom-like,” but her sheer enthusiasm garnered some whoops and a call of “Shake it, mama!”

Scott rolled his eyes but still smiled at his friend clearly having the fun she was seeking. He danced with her for a bit (the most generous description this time could be “uncle with two left feet”) before turning around to find himself face-to-face with the young man he had spied earlier.

He had red hair and fair skin, though flushed slightly from dancing. Wide blue eyes caught his, but Scott tore his gaze away to note plump lips. He didn’t look as young as Scott’s initial impression suggested—college age, surely, but maybe not yet drinking age. He wore a white-and-green tank, multicolored shorts, and a wristband that had to indicate he was at least twenty-one. A pang of embarrassment hit Scott, realizing the bartender had never carded him or Val based solely on their perceived ages.

But then the young man smiled. “Hi. Wanna dance?”

Without thinking, Scott replied, “Yeah.”

The man turned around and sensually ground his clothed ass against Scott’s crotch. Given Scott’s earlier poor dance routine, he was certain he was going to disappoint his partner. But deep within, something clicked: it was primal, instinctual, greedy. He gripped the narrow waist and pulled the man even closer into him. Scott was sure his dance partner could feel the growing bulge against him, and maybe it was too forward, but in that moment, Scott didn’t care. If the man wanted to dance, then that was what Scott was going to give. They were in sync, the man leaning into Scott and Scott boldly placing one hand on the man’s back to hold them together as their hips moved as one.

A loud cheer from Val broke the spell. Scott pulled away, and the man turned around, seemingly confused why he had stopped. Scott gestured at the bar, then at the doors leading to a quieter outdoors area, and asked loud enough to be heard over the music, “Can I buy you a drink?”

The young man smiled, grabbed Scott’s hand, and led him away from the crowd.

As Peter mourns the loss of Harry, Evan brings a lively puppy into their lives, who takes over their home and hearts. Will’s young beagle, Bob, hasn’t met a trainer he can’t break. Is Lawrence the exception? Dan walks away from Jesse after too many broken promises. Will Jesse’s puppy, Norman, manage to bring them back together?

Hairy Harry's Car Seat #1

Peter Mitchell walked away with from his marriage with two things: a suitcase and Hairy Harry, the family pet.

When Harry becomes ill, Peter is faced with one of the hardest decisions he's ever had to make... saying goodbye to his best friend.

Evan Wells is the locum vet who attends to Harry and Peter is surprised at how quickly they become friends. Peter finds himself looking forward to Evan's nightly phone calls and the meals they share together. He knows Evan is gay but it doesn't bother him until Evan confesses his attraction to him. Peter has to admit to himself that he's not as adverse to the possibility as he thought he would be, and that does bother him.

Excerpt - Hairy Harry's Car Seat

Just before eight o’clock, Evan walked in with two bags from the local Chinese takeaway.

Peter eyed them with amusement. “Two bags? How many people are we expecting?”

“Ha ha. I can take whatever is left over for dinner tomorrow as you’re not feeding me.”

“You could always cook for yourself,” Peter pointed out drily.

After two weeks Evan had a small stock of recipes to try at home.

“What would be the fun in that when there’s a perfectly good Chinese in the fridge? Is one of those for me?” Evan held his hand out for one of the beers Peter clutched to his chest.

“No, I’m going to drink both and leave you to go thirsty.”

“I’ll take your chilli beef,” Evan threatened.

“Mmmm, nice cold beer.”

Peter pretended to drink from one of the bottles, although the cap was still on. The next thing he knew he was pinned against the fridge, still holding the bottles above his head, and staring up into fierce charcoal-dark eyes.

“I—” Peter stopped, his mouth dry. Evan’s body pressed into every inch of him.

“I want my beer,” Evan growled.

Every nerve in Peter was tingling. He couldn’t help his reaction to feel of Evan forcing him against the fridge door. And the growl. Jesus. The growl washot. Peter’s heart pounded, knowing he was hard, and he felt an answering hardness against his belly. He wanted to push against Evan’s arousal, to relieve the ache.

“Take me… one,” Peter said.

Evan stepped away from him so quickly Peter almost dropped the beer bottles. “I… Fuck, I’m sorry, Pete.”

Peter thrust a bottle at him. “Here.”

Evan fumbled with the bottle opener, the lid flicking onto the floor. Peter watched as he virtually downed the contents in one go.

“Better?” At some point Peter was going to be able to manage more than one word sentences.

“Yeah.” Evan wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “No. I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“You didn’t,” Peter said automatically.

“No?”

“No. Well, more shocked. I’m not used to being manhandled.”

“You’re more used to doing the manhandling?”

“Not really,” Peter said sadly.

Evan nodded. “I understand.”

He probably didn’t but that was okay. Peter wasn’t sure he understood himself. All he knew was that Evan’s manoeuvre had left him breathless, and he wasn’t sure why.

Bob, the Destroyer of Leads #2

Bob, a beagle with a very bad attitude. He eats through every lead purchased by his despairing owner, Will Duffy. One moment he is walking to heel, the next he is a free dog, triumphantly tearing down the road with Will chasing after him.

It's a great game for Bob until the day he breaks through lead number ten and is hit by Lawrence Taylor's car as he runs across the road, leaving Bob unconscious and his back leg broken. Will has to ask Lawrence for a lift to the vets, and endure the man's scolding all the way there. Even worse, Will discovers Lawrence is a dog trainer!

Bob ends up in a cast and is forced to wear the cone of shame. Of course, Lawrence thinks all Bob and Will need are dog training classes, except Bob hasn't met a trainer yet he couldn't break. Is Lawrence man enough for the job?

Excerpt - Bob, the Destroyer of Leads

“Will, wait up.”

Will looked over his shoulder to see Lawrence jogging towards him. “Hi, what are you doing here?”

“Waiting for you, obviously. I thought you got out at five.”

Will bridled at Lawrence’s snappish tone. “I don’t see what it’s got to do with you when I leave work.”

Lawrence took a deep breath. “I’m sorry I snapped. When you didn’t come out I was worried I’d missed you.”

Knowing that it was partly his fault for being rude, Will nodded. “Text me next time and I’ll leave earlier.”

“Sure, come on.” Lawrence led the way back to his car. “I finished my client early and thought you’d appreciate the lift.”

“I thought you ran dog training classes,” Will said as he strapped on his seat belt.

“I do, but I take on private clients too. Some dogs don’t react well in a group situation.”

“Do you make a good living from training dogs?”

Lawrence nodded. “Good enough. I don’t need a lot to get by.”

“And you want to train Bob?”

“If I say yes, will that start another argument?” Lawrence asked cautiously.

Will snorted. “Three days ago I’d have said yes, but after watching Bob run out into the road, I think I need your help.”

“Good. I’m really pleased to hear you say that.”

“Of course, Bob will eat you alive.”

Lawrence snorted. “What did you say? You’d never met a trainer that Bob couldn’t break?”

“He has that reputation,” Will said. “He’s been banned from three dog training classes, and the other two suggested Bob might be happier somewhere else.”

“He seems quite placid and friendly at the moment.”

“I don’t think he’s got over the anaesthetic. He is never this quiet.” Will missed ‘his’ Bob. This quiet dog wasn’t the same.

Hazel Takes Over #3

After the death of his beloved dog, Harry, Peter Mitchell refuses to consider getting a new dog. Besides which, Peter has his hands full with his partner, Dr Evan Wells. The vet is surprisingly sensitive about Peter’s feelings and doesn’t nag Peter about getting a pet. Of course, not nagging and not doing anything about it are two different things, at least in Evan’s mind.

When Peter is presented with a small red bundle of fur to hold, he realises the devious vet planned their new arrival and worse, she’s already got a name. Peter may not have a choice about their dog, but he’s going to put his foot down over her name. He should know better.

Excerpt - Hazel Takes Over

Peter awoke, overheated, stifled, and trapped on both sides. Evan was wrapped around him as usual; the man was a human teddy bear. This time he’d managed to pin Peter to the bed so he couldn’t move at all. Peter stayed where he was, not bothering to open his eyes as he dozed contently until the call of nature became too great. Half-heartedly and still with his eyes closed, Peter wriggled to free himself, and received a grumble in both ears.

He frowned. Evan was his superman but even he couldn’t manage stereo conversation. Neither did he have a wet nose. Peter cracked open one eye, to find as he expected Evan was spooned up behind him, still whuffing gently as he slept. Bright eyes and a huge smile greeted him instead.

“How did you get here, trouble?” he asked, stroking Hazel’s back.

“Hmmm? Haven’t had time to get into trouble yet,” Evan muttered.

“Not you. Ms Hazel here. You gave in, huh?”

“Huh?” Evan leaned over him. “Hazel, how did you get here?”

Peter tilted his head to look Evan. He had to give the man credit for being a good actor. He looked genuinely surprised to see Hazel lying on the bed. “I wonder,” he said drily. “It’s amazing how she managed to open the kitchen door, climb the stairs and get on the bed.”

Stormin' Norman #4

Dan had been Jesse’s partner for many years, and always there for Jesse on his return from difficult assignments. However, after breaking his promise not to leave again, Jesse learns to his cost that Dan can be pushed too far. When he returns home, broken in body and spirit, Jesse finds his house empty and Dan in the arms of someone else.

To fill his life, Jesse decides to get a dog. His friends and neighbours take him to choose a puppy. What he doesn’t expect is for Norman to choose him. As Jesse takes on a new job, with Norman’s assistance, he realises that Dan isn’t far away, and he still loves him. Dan has moved on with his life. Can Jesse do the same?

Excerpt - Stormin' Norman

The barman gossiped about the recent gas explosion in the pub down the road Jesse listened with half his attention, keeping an eye on the dark-haired bloke in the corner.

The man didn’t disappoint. As soon as Jesse had his beer, he came over and sat on the bar stool next to Jesse. To give him credit, he didn’t piss about.

“Hi, I’m Dan.”

Jesse assessed him carefully. He was older than he’d appeared in the shadows—early forties maybe, the start of lines around his eyes and a sprinkle of grey at his temples. Not Jesse’s type. Jesse was in his mid-thirties. He usually went for men younger than him, searching for uncomplicated hook-ups and nothing more.

“Hi.” Jesse didn’t say any more, hoping his off-hand tone would tell the guy he was wasting his time.

Dan ordered another beer and turned back to him. “I haven’t seen you in here before.”

“I’ve been away.”

“Do you want a beer, a chat, and then see what happens?”

His approach caught Jesse’s attention. Normally blokes started off with “Do you wanna fuck me?” Nine times out of ten Jesse said no.

“I’m not the marrying kind,” Jesse said.

Dan blinked. “I asked you for a beer, not a ring.”

Jesse shrugged. “You’re older than me. I thought I’d get that off the table.”

“Thanks,” Dan said drily. “So all older men are desperate for a ring and kids. I’ll remember that next time I ask for a hook-up. I’ll only go for the younger twinks.” He got up and smiled sadly at Jesse. “Sometimes a beer is just a beer.”

Dan walked back to where he’d been sitting.

“He’s a nice guy,” the barman said.

Jesse frowned. “What?”

“Dan. He’s decent and he’s not looking for anything from you.”

“You overheard that?”

Sean nodded as he wiped the bar down. “He’s a great bloke. A little shy. He comes in here most days for lunch. It would have taken a lot of courage for him to talk to you. You could have just said no.”

Flash Me by K.M. Neuhold - Release Blitz with Excerpt

FLASH ME
A Heathens Ink Novel
K.M. NEUHOLD
M/M ROMANCE
RELEASE DATE: 09.03.18

Blurb

Liam

I was kicked out at sixteen for being transgender, but it turned out to be one of the best things to ever happen to me. At twenty-one, I have a fantastic new family made up of my brother and a handful of wonderful friends, I own my own photography business, and I’m happier than I imagined possible. There’s just one thing missing… Okay, maybe two…

Wyatt

When I took the position volunteering as a therapist at Rainbow House, I knew I’d found my place in the world: helping teens who had been rejected by their families. What I didn’t expect was the friendship I formed with Liam or how it would grow over the years into a crush I just couldn’t shake. I’m happy to see him finally opening himself up to dating with someone he trusts like Owen. But when he comes to me and asks if I can help his boyfriend, I feel like there’s more to the request than just a few therapy sessions. The more I get to know Owen, the more I like him, too.

Owen

I’m not sure why I believe so much in fate when she’s dealt me nothing but crappy hands—a stint in prison and enough childhood horrors to fuel all my adult nightmares. But I still hold on to the idea that everything happens for a reason. What I can’t figure out is why fate would plop me naked into Liam’s bed under the pretext of helping him with a photo series for a gallery showing. Or why my stomach goes funny every time he smiles at me. Liam is too sweet to be exposed to my demons, but I don’t know how to protect him…Maybe that’s why fate gave us Wyatt.

***This is the seventh book in the Heathens Ink series. Each book in the series CAN be read as a stand-alone, but characters do re-occur so it’s more fun to read them all!

Excerpt

“Yes, yes, yes,” he squeals as he lands in my lap.

I catch him, just barely keeping the chair from tipping over with both of us in it. He throws his arms around my neck and squeezes me tightly. I catch Owen’s eye over Liam’s shoulder and find him smiling nearly as big.

Liam pulls back from the hug and looks into my eyes. His smile is shyer now, and when his pink tongue darts out to lick his lips, my dick thickens against my thigh. My heart rate kicks into a gallop, and I tighten my grip on his hips.

“Can I kiss you?” he asks, his voice so sweet I’m sure I would agree to anything he could ever think to ask. I look over his shoulder at Owen again who nods encouragingly.

“Yes,” I agree.

I expect Liam to lean in slowly, maybe continue with the theme of shy and sweet. But my permission seems to flip a switch. He takes off my glasses and takes my face between his hands, pressing his lips hard against mine. I can taste the overly sweet wine on his lips as he teases and coaxes me to part my lips.

My entire body lights up as Liam’s hot tongue slips into the depths of my mouth, eagerly licking me, tasting me. I wrap my arms tight around his slim waist and press his body harder against mine, desperate to feel all of him. I catch his whimpers in my mouth and swallow them, kissing him deeper, running my tongue along his and tempting him to give me more. I want everything Liam has to offer and then some. I want to know every inch of his body inside and out, and I want him to know mine.

My throbbing erection grinds against the firmness in the front of Liam’s jeans and sends a jolt of heat from head to toe. I want to lay him down right here on the patio and rut against him until we’re both breathless and sweaty. I want so much I’m sure I’ll go mad from it.

It’s only Owen’s quiet words that drag me back to reality. “Fuck, that’s hot.”

I'm an author of m/m and new adult romance. I have a strong passion for writing characters with a lot of heart and soul, and a bit of humor as well.

During an ultimate war with evil and the battle that brought it to an end once and for all, The Kings and Queens of the Thirteen Realms joined forces against Hatred, Lust, and Death… and in the ensuing catastrophic chaos, the fabric of time and space was fundamentally fractured. Two dimensions collided, bringing changes both large and small, sudden yet eternal.

However, one of her friends is quite special too – or about to be – and neither one of them has any clue. This new world carries with it new forces, and those forces play upon the young man, altering him as much as the altered world and plunging Mimi and her companion into the dangerous underworld depths of the new supernatural kingdoms.

Worse yet, the colliding dimensions weakened a very old barrier, one that has kept a primordial and powerful atrocity at bay for countless millennia. Only one creature, one darkly brilliant soul, stands between this evil force and the new world. But Bantariax the Great Black Dragon can only remain vigilant against his deadly foe for so long. Blurb

Damien is nine years old when his parents die. What should have been the worst moment of his life begins a journey shadowed by loneliness and pain. The night of a full moon, four years and seven foster homes later, Damien flees to the forest, desperate to escape everything.

Instead, he finds the Salgado pack, and the earth beneath his feet shifts. Damien has seen the Salgado children in his school: Koko, who is in his class, and Hakan, two years older and infinitely unreachable. Damien is suddenly introduced into a world that had only ever existed in his imagination, where there is magic in the forest and the moon. He meets creatures that look like monsters, but Damien knows that monsters have the same face as anybody else.

Over the years, Damien and Hakan grow closer. First, just as friends and foster brothers in the Salgado house, and then into something heated and breathless when Damien joins Hakan at college. Despite what he may yearn for in the darkest part of the night, Damien knows, deep down in that bruised and mealy part of his core, that he’s not good enough to be part of the Salgado family, their pack. He’s not worthy of calling Hakan his home.

Even though he knows in the end it’ll hurt him, he’ll hold onto this for as long as he can.

CONTENT WARNING: This book contains themes of emotional and (nonsexual) physical child abuse and the subsequent emotional, cognitive, and behavioural impacts.

Blurb

Liam O’Donoughue is happy with his life. He runs V Wilderness Adventures with his best friends, his chosen brothers, and gets to spend his days hiking in the gorgeous Adirondacks. What’s not to love? But when he meets Austin on a hike, he thinks he’s found something he didn’t even know was missing.

Austin Jock is content with his work as a radiology tech and playing bass in a cover band. Someday he wants to find his forever person but doesn’t believe in romantic fireworks and isn’t sure it’ll ever happen. Then Liam comes crashing into his life, igniting sparks. Huge, life-altering sparks.

The connection between the two men is instant, and things move fast. But Austin isn’t sure what to do with everything he’s feeling inside. Can Liam convince him falling in love is the easiest thing in the world?

Excerpt

As Austin relaxed, he smiled more, and his body lost that tight posture. He leaned against me a little as the evening wore on, and when he started to shiver, I put my arm around him. The soft sigh he gave was one of the sweetest sounds I’d ever heard. I wanted to push him down onto the ground and devour him, taste and touch every inch of his delectable skin. But it was much too soon for that, and I definitely didn’t want to do it with an audience.

Eventually, he pulled out his phone, woke it up, and sighed. He turned into me so his entire side was pressed against my chest and tilted his head back, so he could look into my eyes.

“I have to go. I’ve got an early-ish shift tomorrow.”

Acute disappointment flooded my veins. But I nodded.

“Let me walk you to your car,” I murmured.

He nodded and stood. It took a little bit to say goodbye. I appreciated the enthusiasm Everett gushed over him, and I was pleased to see Drew give him a warm handshake. Finally, we moved out of the ring of firelight and ambled toward his car. Neither one of us seemed in a hurry for things to end.

“So, uh.” Austin cleared his throat, and then whispered so softly it was barely audible. “Poop.”

I laughed quietly, and reached out, tilting his face up. “Thanks for coming. I really wanted to see you.”

Austin sucked in a breath and held it, then let it out in a rush of words, “Was this a date?”

It took me a second to understand, because he’d spoken so fast I almost couldn’t make out what he said. But when I did, my grin was so wide my face hurt.

“Well, I certainly thought it was. I definitely wanted it to be. What’s your verdict?”

He gave a shaky laugh. “Me, too.”

“Good.” I cautiously took a step closer, wanting to be in his space, and he let me. He even lifted a hand and placed it on my waist. I cursed the layers between us. I wanted to feel his touch on my skin.

“Do you maybe want to do it again? Uh, go on a date, I mean?”

“No maybe about it. I definitely want to do it again.”

Austin nodded, opened his mouth, and then shut it again. He shook his head, mouthed a word I couldn’t make out in the dimness, and then said, “Can I cook for you?”

“I would love that,” I said fervently.

“Oh. Good.” Austin’s smile bloomed on his face, and for a long minute, I was captivated by his full, kissable mouth. I almost didn’t hear what he said next. “I have Tuesday off. Want to come over?”

“Just tell me what time.”

Austin laughed, and I swore it sounded like music. “I’ll text you as soon as I figure out what to make. You don’t have any allergies, do you?”

“Not to food.”

“Good. Then. Tuesday?”

“Absolutely.”

Austin sucked in another breath, kissed my cheek again with one of those fleeting, butterfly kisses, and then scrambled to get in his car. I couldn’t keep the grin off my face as I waved him on and stood there until his car disappeared around the bend in the drive.

Nell Iris is a romantic at heart who believes everyone deserves a happy ending. She’s a bona fide bookworm (learned to read long before she started school), wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without something to read (not even the ladies’ room), loves music (and singing along but, let’s face it, she’s no Celine Dion), and is a real Star Trek nerd (“Make it so”). She loves words, poetry, wine, and Sudoku, and absolutely adores elephants!

Nell believes passionately in equality for all regardless of race, gender, or sexuality, and wants to make the world a better, less hateful, place.

Nell is a forty-something bisexual Swedish woman, married to the love of her life, and a proud mama of a grown daughter. She left the Scandinavian cold and darkness for warmer and sunnier Malaysia a few years ago, and now spends her days writing, surfing the Internet, enjoying the heat, and eating good food. One day she decided to chase her lifelong dream of being a writer, sat down in front of her laptop, and wrote a story about two men falling in love.

Nell Iris writes gay romance, prefers sweet over angst, and wants to write diverse and different characters.

Blurb

Rafael Patino has a great life in Rain Valley. He’s a teacher at the high school, has a great group of friends, and enjoys the occasional baseball game. Other than the sporadic call from his drunken mother, he’s pretty content.

He’s also been in love with his best friend Dustin for nearly a decade. Years of keeping those feelings under control are put to the test when they begin a summer project together.

Dustin Vance builds furniture for a living, has just earned his pilot’s license, and has an amazing best friend. When he buys a 1976 Cessna Skyhawk, he asks Rafael to help restore it, then travel with him to Wisconsin for the largest aviation convention in the world.

As they spend their days working on the plane, they begin to spend their nights together. Will they find love in the clouds, or will they stall out before they even take off?

Excerpt

A cool breeze blew past him as he walked into the night. Rafael texted Dustin before he pulled out of the parking lot, letting him know he was leaving and asking about Mac’s phone number. But since Dustin was probably sound asleep, he’d likely have to get that number after sunup.

As he turned onto his street, he saw a vehicle in his drive—Dustin’s Honda. His best friend had a key, so was probably inside.

He eventually found Dustin sprawled on his sofa, sound asleep, his arm crooked over his head. Rafael felt drawn to him like a magnet, but being too damned tired to fight his urges, he let himself look. Dustin’s T-shirt had ridden up, showing a stripe of pale skin, and Rafael imagined it soft and silky. His fingers itched to slip under the hem. He stared a little too long, though, and by the time he dragged up his gaze to

Dustin’s face, he found his friend staring back at him, smirking.

“You want to take a picture of…something?” he drawled teasingly.

Heat flooded Rafael’s cheeks and he forced a chuckle. “Whatever.”

Dustin rose and hugged him hard, as if just remembering what had happened. “God, I’m so sorry, Raf. Is the girl going to be okay?”

Rafael nodded, but wrapped Dustin in his arms, his head falling on the man’s shoulder. They stayed like that for a while. With anyone else, Rafael might have been embarrassed that he was fighting the urge to cry. Dustin held him tight and shared his strength. It crept into Rafael, shored him up. Helped him get past the image of Daisy huddled in that hospital bed. At least for a while.

When he finally pulled away, Dustin kept his arms around him and Rafael was too exhausted to read anything into it.

“Why are you here?”

“Because I know you, Raf. I know you care about your students—you open your heart to everyone. But I also know you’ve been particularly worried about this girl. I just didn’t want you coming home to an empty house.”

Rafael’s heart cracked more and he felt raw, open, and vulnerable. The world had reared its ugly head and shown its hideousness. He also felt lonely. Bone tired and so lonely. And he didn’t want to be lonely. At least not for the night. He swallowed hard. “Will you…stay?”

Dustin nodded, no hint of hesitation in his blue-green eyes. “Is there anything else I can do?”

Author Bio

Sarah Hadley Brook lives smack-dab in the middle of the Heartland and is the mother of two wonderful young men, as well as two cats. During the day, she works in the nonprofit world, but reserves evenings for her hobby-turned-passion of writing, letting the characters she conjures in her mind take the lead and show her where the story will go. When not working or writing, she can be found reading, working on dollhouses, trying her hand at new recipes, or watching old movies and musicals. In her ideal world, Christmas would come at least twice a year, Rock Hudson and Doris Day would have costarred in more than three movies, and chocolate would be a daily necessity. She dreams of traveling to Scotland some day and visiting the places her ancestors lived. Sarah believes in “Happily Ever After” and strives to ensure her characters find their own happiness in love and life.
