Lilliana inhaled a shaky breath as she stood on the portal pad inside Sheoul-gra, the symbols engraved into the stone glowing hotly. A breeze swirled around her, rattling the leaves on the perpetually blooming citrus trees and bringing their tangy and sweet scents to her nose. Grassy lawns stretched for acres, broken by babbling streams and worn paths — and the occasional ancient Greek column or demonic statue that rose into the featureless gray sky.

Several yards away, a fountain that once ran with blood splashed crystal water onto pavers leading to outbuildings that housed dozens of Unfallen angels and Memitim. And beyond the fountain, Azagoth’s palace towered over all, its pale walls gleaming.

Relief sifted through her, temporarily replacing her nervousness. The realm was attuned to Azagoth’s moods, and she wasn’t sure what she’d have done if she’d come back to find the kind of decay and evil that had once held court here.

The Grim Reaper’s realm could be beautiful but disconcerting; look, but not too closely, touch, but don’t feel.

Her gut turned over, and inside her rounded belly, the baby stirred as if sensing the return of her anxiety.

Except that anxiety was too mellow a word for what she was experiencing. Really, she was flat-out terrified, mere moments away from seeing her husband for the first time in months. For the first time since she’d left him.

And he didn’t have a clue that she was pregnant.

She almost regretted telling Reaver that she didn’t need him to accompany her down here when he’d flashed her from Ares’s Greek island to the outer portal. She should have at least allowed Maleficent, a hellhound that had shadowed her everywhere on the island, to come with her. The hound had refused to leave her side until Cara distracted the beast long enough for Lilliana to get away. She was going to miss the moose-sized canine, but Cara assured her that Mal would find her if the hellhound had bonded with her.

Lilliana was going to have a hard enough time trying to explain bringing home a baby, let alone a pet that ate people.

Resting her palm on her baby bump, she stepped off the landing pad and started toward the palace, her heart pounding wildly. Azagoth would have sensed her presence by now.

Before that thought even faded, the skin on the back of her neck tingled, and she stopped in her tracks.

He was here.

He was behind her.

She should turn around and face him. But damn, she wasn’t ready for this.

Closing her eyes, she let out a long, ragged breath, and when she spoke, she could only manage a whisper. “Azagoth.”

EXCERPT :

Cipher threw out a hand to warn Lyre off. His control sucked, which he proved as a fireball shot at her from the palm of his hand.
Fire engulfed her, demon-faced flames that laughed and bit at her. No! Oh, shit. He felt her screams all the way to his gut as she fell to the ground and writhed in violent agony,
Soretay! Stop!” He yelled commands in Sheoulic as he rushed toward her, but his words were useless.
He dove on top of her, covering her with his body. He tried to wrap his ugly-ass wings around her, but the fuckers didn’t behave, instead fanning the flames, beating the both of them as they flapped uselessly.
Then, for no reason he could figure out, the shrieking apparitions flickered out. Lyre went limp beneath him, her exhausted, panting breaths puffing hot air against his neck.
“Wow,” she rasped. “That was unexpected.”
He pushed himself up on one arm and looked down at her. Scorch marks streaked her face and her clothes were singed. The hemline of her shirt was completely gone, leaving her flat belly exposed, a smudge of soot forming a crescent under her navel.
He wanted to clean it off with his tongue. Too bad she was playing for the wrong team.
You’re playing for the same team now.
No he wasn’t. He might be a fallen angel, but not by choice. And, until evil took him over completely, he wasn’t in league with them yet. And he’d never play for Bael the Seriously Unstable. Right now he had no choice, but once he figured out these new powers, he was going to get the fuck out of here.
“You can let me up anytime now,” Lyre said softly. “Preferably before one of your new powers incinerates or melts me.”
“Right.” He jumped up and offered her a hand.
“Thanks, but no.” Eyeing his hand like it was a viper, she pushed to her feet and backed away from him.. “I’m just going to watch from…over there.” She pointed to a bluff in the distance. The far distance.
It was probably for the best. With little to lose, he was going to test his limits and push his boundaries.
And boundaries? Well, those were something he’d never believed in, and for once, that little personality flaw was going to work for him instead of against him.

“Max?”
Her voice was even more hoarse than his, and he leaned down, doing the only thing he could think of. He brushed his lips against her forehead. “Don’t speak. Let me get you some water for your throat.”
Her hands tightened on his shirt, and he froze.
“Or I can call my cousin in to help.”
She just blinked at him, and the bond between them flared. He couldn’t feel what she was feeling, their connection was far too new for that, and he didn’t know what kind of bond they would share anyway. But the fact that her eyes widened told him that she felt the difference, as well.
That was something they would have to work on. Somehow.
Walker walked in, his pleasant Healer face on, even though Max knew that his cousin was worried about them both. Hell, the whole Pack was worried with war on the mind, and Blade’s announcement about being Supreme Alpha—whatever that meant—far too new for comfort.
“You’re awake. That’s good. Let me get you some water to help your throat.” He tapped his ear as Cheyenne gave Max and then Walker a weird look. “Wolf hearing. I was already on my way in when Max offered to call for me. Why don’t you stay in bed, Max? You’re keeping her heart rate down.” He paused, looking at Cheyenne. “Unless you’d rather him leave the room. It’s all up to you, Cheyenne.”
She shook her head, and Max frowned, a sense of disappointment washing over him even though he tried to ignore the cause of it. Sure, they might be mated, but neither of them had made the choice to do so. So the idea that he was sad that his mate was rejecting him shouldn’t hurt. They weren’t really mates. Or, maybe they were, but they didn’t know each other enough for the pain to make sense.
And maybe Max needed time to breathe because he was thinking himself into circles.
“I…I’m fine.” Max let out a low growl at the sound of the pain in her voice, and she froze in his hold, her hand still resting on his chest.
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.”
She shook her head, then took a sip of the water Walker handed Max. She licked her lips, and Max did his best not to look at those lips. It was his wolf and the mating bond making him act this way, it couldn’t be anything else. Not when they were in this position because of something out of their control. She hadn’t had a choice in the matter and that meant there would be no acting on any urge.
Ever.
“It was the first time I felt a growl.”
He nodded, understanding. “Different for you then?”
She nodded. “You could say that.” She coughed, and he gave her more water, careful that she didn’t spill. “I need to tell you what happened…though I don’t know everything.”
Cheyenne looked over at Walker, then back at Max. “There’s something you need to know.”
Max had a feeling none of them were going to like what she had to say.

I leapt backward, triumphant, and grunted as his palm slammed into the center of my chest. The concrete bit into my back as I landed unceremoniously on my ass.

“Shit,” I breathed as stars danced through my vision.

“If you’re going to ruin my pants, you might as well go for the femoral artery,” Xai chastised. “I thought the Nephilim were improving your sparring, love, not worsening it.”

“F*ck you,” I managed as he straddled my hips and settled on top of me.

“Oh, we’ll get to that,” he promised, his ebony eyes grinning seductively.

He plucked the knives from my hands and set them aside before sliding his palms under my shirt to find the other two weapons strapped to my ribs. The last time we did this, he had left me armed and I destroyed one of his favorite shirts. It seemed he didn’t want a repeat performance.

“You don’t play fair,” I said as the spots in my vision started to clear.

“What would be the fun in that?” he asked as he drew one of my blades down the center of my chest. “And you told me not to go easy on you.”

Chapter One
Joseph sighed as he drove his car through the streets of Rockfort. It was nearing midnight and the twenty-five-year-old would’ve been sleeping in his apartment if it hadn’t been for the message he received two hours ago. It wasn’t a long message, just a single line of text telling him about the address he was supposed to be at soon. He knew from experience to arrive some hours after he had received such messages because it allowed the local police to disperse from the scene. Not doing so would’ve been a rookie mistake.

Joseph took in his surroundings. He cruised past buildings on either side of him. The streets were dark and he didn’t see anyone roaming around except for a homeless person or two trying to find a place to sleep for the night.

Joseph parked the car outside the alleyway he was supposed to go into. He looked around one more time. No one in sight, he thought. It was time to get to work. He made sure his gun was in the holster he was wearing under his coat before getting out of the car. Waiting a moment, he concentrated on the sounds around him. He knew he was only human, but it didn’t hurt to be safe and take a second to register one’s surroundings, right? In his line of business, you could never be sure about what was lurking in the darkness ahead.

I guess I’ll have to get on with it, he thought, after making sure no one was watching him. Taking a deep breath, Joseph walked toward the dark alley that had crime scene tape at the entrance. He turned on a small flashlight after taking it out from his coat’s pocket. The beam of light illuminated the alleyway. He noticed some overturned trashcans at a distance. Walking under the crime tape, Joseph took careful steps as he went farther in. As if being watched, his cell phone buzzed the moment he got close to the overturned trashcans.

“Right on time.” He smiled and took out his cell phone. He began reading the e-mail he just received from the department he worked for. The e-mail told him that a murder occurring in the alleyway had been reported about six hours ago. The identity of the man was still unknown and the local police were looking into the matter.

If they were close to finding out who committed the murder, I wouldn’t be here now would I? Joseph rolled his eyes as he continued reading the e-mail. The Rockfort local police was an impressive task force, but some cases fell out of their domain of expertise. The current situation in the alleyway needed a different approach, one that Joseph was trained in taking due to working for the Rockfort Paranormal Department or R.P.D.

Joseph opened the images accompanying the e-mail. The man who was murdered seemed to be in his thirties. The e-mail told Joseph that the cause of death was believed to be excessive blood loss, but the medical examiner hadn’t been able to find any wound or cut responsible. It was as if the man had just dropped dead. One of the residents, living two stories up in the building to Joseph’s right, had alerted the authorities about a man lying on the ground when she looked out her window into the alleyway, calling her cat to come back home.

Joseph put his cell phone back into his pocket after reading the e-mail. Looking at the spot in front of him, the young detective tried to find something important. There were no blood stains on the ground, just plastic markers placed by the police where the victim’s body had lain. Joseph wished he could’ve looked at the body in person, but that wasn’t his job. His job was to investigate crime scenes after the police were done and alert his department in-person if he found something of paranormal interest.

There must be something here, he thought. The department wouldn’t have sent me here if there was nothing for me to find.

The cause of death was listed as excessive blood loss, but as far as he knew there could be a number of things out there that could kill a human that way. Aren’t all such things registered and observed? Joseph asked himself, brushing his black hair away from his eyes. The thought of creatures who could kill in such a way made his heart race.

He was scared? Who wouldn’t be scared if an unregistered being had killed a human? But he was letting his imagination get the better of him. Shaking his head, Joseph tried to focus on his case. Taking out a small glass bottle from his shirt pocket, he flipped open the cap and sprinkled the bottle’s white powder onto the ground.

“Oh no!” Joseph’s eyes opened wide. The ground in front of him shone with a dim green glow. He knew about that glow. He knew something dangerous had entered Rockfort. Quickly pocketing the small bottle, he took out his cell phone to directly call his department. He wasn’t supposed to make direct calls, not with his current rank, but it was an emergency.

“Hello! Sally?” he asked as soon as his call was answered.

“Yes, Mr. Roth,” she said in a bored voice. “What is it? I don’t think you’re authorized to be using this number.”

“Forget about authorization,” Joseph answered quickly. He didn’t take his gaze away from the faint green glow. It was starting to fade away. “Warn the department! We have a vampire case on our hands!”
