Lost & Found by Liv Rancourt - Release Blitz with Excerpt and Giveaway

Length: 75,000 words approx.

Price: 2.99 (4.99 from October 20)

Blurb

A dancer who cannot dance and a doctor who cannot heal find in each other the strength to love.

History books will call it The Great War, but for Benjamin Holm, that is a misnomer. The war is a disaster, a calamity, and it leaves Benjamin profoundly wounded, his mind and memory shattered. A year after Armistice, still struggling to regain his mental faculties, he returns to Paris in search of his closest friend, Elias.

Benjamin meets Louis Donadieu, a striking and mysterious dance master. Though Louis is a difficult man to know, he offers to help Benjamin. Together they search the cabarets, salons, and art exhibits in the newly revitalized city on the brink of les années folles (the Crazy Years). Almost despite himself, Benjamin breaches Louis’s defenses, and the two men discover an unexpected passion.

As his memory slowly returns, Benjamin will need every ounce of courage he possesses to recover Elias’s story. He and Louis will need even more than that to lay claim to the love – and the future – they deserve.

The table on the other side of me was empty, at least until I’d poured myself a second glass of wine. Then, crossing the room in a familiar halting rhythm, my neighbor, the man from the café on the Place du Tertre, took a seat.

I raised my glass in a toast of alcohol-fueled enthusiasm. “It’s nice to see you.”

He blinked as if surprised by my words. “I’m not sure I know you.”

His gaze suggested otherwise. “A while ago, you were at L’Oiseau Bleu.” I swirled the wine in my cup. “Are you following me?”

“I had a taste for fish.” Hooking his cane over the edge of his table, he shrugged again. “And I have better things to do than observe the habits of a drunk American.”

We were interrupted by the arrival of my dinner. There might have been humor in his tone, but still, the sting of his words quashed the impulse to invite him to join me.

Turning to the waiter, slick black hair gleaming, he placed his own order. When the waiter brought his wine, I took the opportunity to raise my glass a second time. “Cheers.” I deliberately did not smile. “Comment allez-vous?” How are you, using the formal “vous,” not the more intimate “tu.”

Tu. In all my time in France, I’d never regularly used the personal form of address. To be honest, if English had an equivalent construction, I could have said the same about my friends and family at home.

“Bien. I am well.”

His tone, and the slight tremor of his fingers on his glass of wine, hinted otherwise. He turned as if to shield himself from my appraisal. I couldn’t help myself. It was my nature to observe. Assess. Diagnose. “I’m Benjamin Holm.” The distance between us was too great to bridge with a handshake.

He raised his glass. “Louis Donadieu.”

I forced my fork through the crisp crust of fish. Juices ran free, and my mouth watered. I ate, hunger keeping my attention fixed on the food on my plate. Though it had been almost two years since I’d last sat at an army canteen, I still attacked each meal as if someone might steal it away.

At my last bite, I glanced at Louis. He watched me, a pool of stillness amidst the confusion around us. “Did you even taste it?”

“Yes.” Swirling my fork through the drippings on my plate, I fought the urge to smile, unsure of the rules for the game he played.

He sniffed. “Bien.” Shifting in his seat, he poured himself more wine. As long as he wasn’t looking, I continued my assessment. He held his right leg extended, as if he was unable to bend it at the knee, but was otherwise quite vigorous, virile even.

I finished my peas and potatoes, bemused by my strange dinner companion. After a week in Paris, I’d had no luck with my main goal, and this conversation, though tentative, intrigued me.

“Were you injured?” I gestured at his feet with my wine.

“What?”

“In the war. Your leg.” His narrowed gaze suggested I’d transgressed. So, no questions about his health. “Pardon. I did not mean to—”

“No, I was unable to participate in the grand conflict.”

He turned his attention away, leaving me confused. This was less a game than a jousting contest. Rather than bring another helping of rudeness on my head, I swallowed the rest of my wine and prepared to leave.

“What are you doing?”

I paused in the act of reaching for my wallet. “I’m finished. I need to be going.” Though I had no real destination beyond the poor comfort of my solitary rooms. Instead of my wallet, I fished out the photograph. “Here.” I stood, leaning over his table and offering him the picture of Elias. “I’m looking for my friend Elias. Have you seen him?”

Always the same words, bringing the same blank response.

“Maybe he doesn’t want to be found.” He tapped the white edge of the photograph, and I snatched it away.

“He’s my friend.”

“So?”

His acid tone burned through my good humor. Who is this man to follow and then abuse me? “Have a good evening.”

“Good evening, though if you give up so easily, you must not really want to find him.”

Surprise kept me planted by his table. “Do you know where he is?”

He tipped his glass in my direction, the corner of his lips curling in what could not truly be called a smile. Though it wasn’t a scowl either. “No, but if I do see him, I will send him to the heavy-footed American man who lives on the floor above me.”

Tired of being the target of his sport, I straightened, falling into the habitual pose of a military officer. “Again, good evening.” Annoyed beyond what the situation called for, I departed.

When his new student turns out to be a handsome property developer with a complicated past, teaching is the last thing on Jake’s mind.

Blurb

When recently single Jake heads off to rural Somerset for a job interview as a reading teacher, he’s expecting his pupil to be a child, but it’s the handsome and charismatic property dealer Nathan Foley who needs his help. Their relationship quickly becomes sexual, and Jake worries he is rushing into another relationship too fast. And, as the heat between them intensifies, Jake begins to question Nathan’s motives.

Adding to the confusion is Nathan’s bitter older sister, Alice, who seems to have taken an instant dislike to Jake, as well as a strange man who Jake spots wandering around the grounds of the house.

What is Alice’s problem? Who is the handsome stranger? And are Nathan Foley’s feelings entirely genuine? Perhaps Jake is the one who is about to learn a hard lesson.

Sunlight was streaming through the huge window when Jake opened his eyes. He could have closed the blinds so that the day wouldn’t have infringed on his sleep, but he was glad he hadn’t. He glanced at his phone, which sat on a small bedside table. It was only seven a.m. He thought about getting dressed and sneaking out of the house alone. He wasn’t sure lunch with Nathan was such a great idea after the knee-rubbing of the previous night, but his new boss had suggested it would be a good chance to talk about how the lessons were going to pan out. Also, if Jake were honest with himself, he liked the idea of spending time with Nathan.

There was no denying he was attracted, but getting involved with Nathan would be a bad idea on so many levels. First of all, Jake was still reeling from his break-up with Matt, and second, Nathan Foley was his boss and student for the next two months. They needed to establish a professional relationship.

As if Nathan could hear his thoughts, there came a knock on the door and the man’s husky voice calling.

“Jake, are you awake?”

Jake froze. Should he keep quiet, pretend to be sleeping or invite Nathan into his bedroom?

The knock came again.

“Yes, come in,” called Jake, making sure the quilt was pulled up to his neck.

Nathan opened the door. He was dressed in a white bath robe that only came down to an inch above his knees. It gaped open at the top, revealing a chest covered in dark hair.

“Morning,” he said. “I’ve made coffee and wondered if you wanted some.” He was holding two mugs in his left hand, one finger looped through the handles.

“Yeah, that would be great,” said Jake, shifting into a sitting position. The quilt dropped down to his waist, revealing his smooth, toned torso. He thought about pulling the quilt up to his neck again but decided it would make him look too paranoid.

“If you’re up for it, I thought we could head over to this beach I know,” said Nathan. “It’s really isolated and would be a great place to walk and chat and build up an appetite for lunch.”

Nathan sat on the end of Jake’s bed, handing him one of the mugs. Jake took it, feeling a flush spread from his face down to his chest.

How did Nathan go from the stony-faced interviewer of just a few days ago to this affable man who brings me coffee in bed?

“That sounds like a plan,” said Jake, unable not to look at Nathan’s exposed chest, one dark nipple clearly visible where the top of the robe hung loose.

“Excellent,” said Nathan, standing. As he moved, his robe momentarily shifted and Jake had to suppress a gasp at the brief glimpse he had of Nathan’s cock. Even while flaccid, it was long and thick, hanging between

Nathan’s firm thighs. Jake hastily averted his gaze, although Nathan’s dick had already disappeared behind the robe.

“See you in about an hour?” Nathan gave him a questioning look.

“Sure,” said Jake, needing Nathan to leave so that he could fantasize about that cock while he masturbated. There was no way he could get through an entire day without responding to the sight of that amazing dick.

As the bedroom door clicked closed, Jake threw back the quilt and grabbed hold of his already hard length, jerking it aggressively as he imagined Nathan sitting on the end of his bed, robe fully open, revealing his entire manly body and that suckable dick, gradually growing hard.

Jake came in several thick gushes, covering his stomach and chest. He lay back, breathing heavily, still thinking of Nathan, now imagining his boss leaning across the bed and kissing him on the lips. A familiar warm feeling spread through his body and Jake realized he was developing more than simple feelings of lust for Nathan Foley. This is going to be a confusing and potentially exciting two months.

A Thousand Lifetimes by Kate Hawthorne - Blog Tour with Excerpt, Giveaway, and Author Q&A

A Thousand Lifetimes - Kate Hawthorne

Kate Hawthorne has a new MM paranormal romance out: "A Thousand Lifetimes."

My name is Ezra Clarke, and I’m twenty-three.

Forever.

If you’re counting in vampire years, I’m actually two-hundred and eight, and if living that long has taught me anything, it’s that nothing lasts forever. And that’s been fine. It’s… whatever. I’ve never wanted anything that long, anyway, which is why I’ve never taken a mate, but that all changed when I met Declan Byrne.

He’s young, handsome, and he doesn’t do what I tell him to. He smells like cinnamon and has eyes that remind me of the daytime sky. Every kiss we share feels like home, and no touch lasts long enough.

I need him to be mine.

And for the briefest moment he is, and life is perfect… and then it isn’t. Rogue vampires threaten to pull us apart, and complicated politics are painful reminders that a world exists beyond our privacy of our bedroom.

But if anyone thinks they can keep me away from Declan, they have another thing coming. My mate and I have a thousand lifetimes to live, and we’re just getting started.

A Thousand Lifetimes meme

The whole drive back to the house, Declan smiles at me like I’ve given him all of his Christmas presents a day early. It’s unreal, the way it makes hope and want and happiness bloom inside a place that’s sat vacant for two centuries. As soon as we get out of the car, he’s at my side, lacing our fingers together and he presses against me like he wants to be attached, and I don’t hate it. The way Declan acts around me makes me feel like I’m bigger than I am, like maybe I didn’t do such a bad thing after all.

I unlock the front door and hear clinking glassware from down the hallway. My parents are up, obviously. I want to pull Declan upstairs because I’m not ready to share him yet. I only want him to be mine and I want this time to be ours. Just for one more night.

That’s a lie.

A lot more nights.

I want at least four more years of nights before I need to worry about whatever my parents are about to unload on us.

“Ezra,” my father calls from the dining room, and the hope inside of me plummets into the floor.

“We’re going upstairs,” I answer.

“Ezra.” This time it’s my mother and I curse them both under my breath because they know I can’t say no to her. I’ve never been able to.

“It’s okay,” Declan whispers against my neck. “I hope they like me.”

I turn and cup his face in my hands, and I’m pretty sure it’s impossible for someone to not like him. He’s perfection.

I nod and lead him into the dining room where he stands nervously half a step behind me. My mom gets up and comes around the table and looks at me like I’ve done something wonderful. She has this proud smile on her face and her eyes shift to look at Declan.

“And who are you?” she asks in this soothing way she has about her. She’s trying to get him to relax, and I equal parts appreciate it and hate it.

“I’m Declan,” he answers, staying still. “Declan Byrne.”

“Old name.”

“That’s what Ezra said.”

Her lips twitch into a smile. “How are you feeling, Declan? Let’s come and sit down.”

She returns to her seat at the table and we both follow. Declan slips into the chair he sat at earlier, and I take mine. My parents both have drinks in front of them, and my mom asks if we want anything. Declan reaches over and grabs my thigh, his fingertips treacherously close to my sac.

“I’m alright for now, thank you,” he says.

“Declan, these are my parents, Birdie and William Clarke.”

“It’s nice to meet you.”

“How are you fairing, then?” my mother asks again. She slides her hand across the table, palm up, and my father tangles their fingers together.

“Fine, I think.”

“He’s fine,” I answer. “We’re both fine.”

“You, darling, were far from fine when it was your time. Have things changed so much now that such a life changing experience can be so well-received?” my mother says, and I bristle at the insinuation. I reach beneath the table and take Declan’s hand.

“Our circumstances weren’t comparable,” I whisper, clearing my throat when the words catch. I don’t want to have this conversation.

“I really am doing okay,” Declan interjects. “I think it will be an adjustment, obviously. But it’s not the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.”

A wave of fear and disgust washes over me and I blink Declan into focus. He’s looking across the table at my mother, but there’s no doubt we’re feeling the same way. I grip his hand tighter, and hope he knows that he has me now, and whatever happened to him in the past won’t ever happen again.

“I’m sure Ezra has told you the basics, yes?” My father finally speaks up.

“No sun. No food. No silver.”

“I assume since you’ve turned the two of you have… been intimate?” He looks properly embarrassed, and I wonder what he would have looked like if he could blush.

“Yes,” I answer.

“Was there… a blood exchange?”

“Yes,” I bite out.

“Good. The mate bond is sealed.”

“What now?” I cock my head to the side.

“Once the mate is turned, the bond is there, but it’s weak until it’s sealed with a blood exchange. If you’ve done that, the bond is sealed.”

“Why haven’t you ever told me that before?”

“I honestly never expected you to take a mate, Ezra,” my mother answers, taking her hand out of my fathers and folding them together neatly in front of her.

“You wanted to go to Hawaii,” I grumble.

“You’re such a wonderful boy.”

“I can hear his thoughts,” Declan blurts out. “Is that normal?”

My mother raises an eyebrow and shoots a quick glance at my father. “Sometimes.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means there're different degrees.” He waves his hand in the air with a small flourish. “Sometimes the bond between mates is stronger, more solid.”

“Like soul mates,” my mother supplies.

“Soul mates?” I ask

“What else is there?” Declan speaks over me, and my parents ignore my question for his.

“It’s a list,” my mother laughs. “It varies, I think. Some of it develops over time, some never. Like William said, it varies.”

“What kinds of things though?”

“I don’t think that’s appropriate dinner conversation.”

“I’ve had dinner.” Declan shoots a challenging look across the table.

What was your favorite thing about writing this book?
I loved all of it, honestly. I don’t want to give too much away, but there is a very special connection between Ezra and Declan and it was a lot of fun to play around with the ways it could be used as a plot device.

Who is your favorite secondary character in this book?
That’s such a tough decision, as I have very fond feelings for all of them. I really think that Jedidiah, though, is a very layered character, and we’re all just seeing the start of his development. He’s Ezra’s brother, and he’s much quieter and far more subdued, but as I wrapped up A Thousand Lifetimes, he was being pretty chatty in my ear.

What character in this story fought you the hardest?
Definitely Ezra. Even though I don’t actively plot, I had an idea in my head for where I wanted him to end up and once we were nearly there he really dug his heels in and argued with me about it. I worried that I wasn’t going to be able to save the story because of it, but after a heart-to-heart, we were able to come to an agreement about the whole thing.

Which character in this story was the most fun to write?
Also, definitely Ezra, my broody little vamp. This story was a departure from my traditional plot lines. Not only is it my first paranormal book, but it’s also the first book I’ve written in first person present POV. When I started writing, I never set out with the plan to write in third person past, it just happened, and it worked, so I stuck with it. I started toying around with the POV shift for a story I did as part of a giveaway and I had a lot of fun, so I wanted to give it a shot for something longer. I figured since this whole book was something new, I might as well go big. It was really great being able to get into Ezra’s head in ways I wouldn’t have been able to if I’d written him in third.

Time for a quick chat with Ezra and Declan:
Are you happy with the way Kate left your story?
Ezra – She could have given us an epilogue! I mean, Declan and I are trying to make plans and I’ve made him some promises. She could give me a little help on seeing them through.
Declan – I’m sure she’s good for it. Give her a break.
Ezra – You know I’m not patient.
Declan – That’s an understatement. But we’re together, and that’s what counts, right?
Ezra – We’ll always be together.
Declan – I know. And so does Kate. But do you think she’ll let me have some garlic bread next time?

What are you working on now and when can we expect it?
A Thousand Lifetimes ends with two side relationships that I am excited to write in the future, so you can expect more vampires from me in 2020. Before then, I have a collaboration coming out with J.R. Gray called May the Best Man Win, and I’m planning an early 2020 release for my next solo title, Unfettered.

Summer of Hush has a new contemporary MM romance out: "Summer of Hush."

Hush is back… and it’s about to get loud.

After two years grieving the death of his best friend, Silas Franklin is back on the road with his metalcore band, Hush. With a new member, a brilliant new album, and a headlining spot on the last cross-country Warped Tour, life couldn’t be better—unless Silas could meet the intriguing music blogger known only as the Guru. Silas has followed his blog for years and feels the Guru might be the only person who “gets” him.

For years Krishnan Guruvayoor has reported on the metal scene as an anonymous blogger, and he’s just landed an internship on the Warped Tour as well as a potential position with a well-respected music magazine. His best friend arranges for him to meet singer Silas Franklin—but only as Krish the Intern. Their chemistry is instant, and Krish is thrilled to get to know the man behind the music.

Summer of Hush meme

“Did you see this?”

Los held up his phone and displayed it like Vanna White in all her glory.

“New Guru?” Silas asked, his heart rate making the jump to lightspeed.

“‘The Last Warped Hurrah.’ He’s coming. You’ll for sure get to meet him.” Los wiggled his eyebrows at Silas, who tried to play the whole thing off as though he wasn’t ready to start jumping on the couch and doing back flips.

“That’s cool,” he said, hiding his excitement. The possibilities….He’d had his hopes up that he might meet him two years ago when they played Warped, but the Guru never said what show he attended. Silas had analyzed his posts to see if he could get any idea where it might have been. Ridiculous. Tons of dates, a blur of venues, and thousands of screaming fans in the hot sun—it was hopeless. The guy didn’t answer private messages either. Because he’d tried that.

“Says here he’ll be posting about the shows,” Los said, still reading through the blog while waiting for his hair dye to set. Jordan volunteered to be their hair maintenance person because he’d gone through barber school before he became a rock ’n’ roller.

“Dude, stop moving,” Jordan scolded Los. He was trying to avoid getting black dye on his red T-shirt, but Los kept moving around.

“Sorry.”

Silas checked the tour schedule hanging at the front of the bus. “There are thirty-eight dates on this tour. He could be at any of them. It’s not like anyone knows what he looks like. All of his videos are animated.”

“Maybe he’ll post about the different shows, like who he sees. And Brains is doing his workshops. Dude—”

“Dude, why are you guys being so loud?” Billy Brains climbed from his bunk on the tour bus and stretched his lanky body in the narrow hallway. The band had held its final run-through last night at their rehearsal space in Oakland and was headed to Pomona for the opening date of the show that weekend.

“Because, bruh, Silas might finally get to meet his crush.”

Silas threw a rag, but Los dodged it and was reprimanded by Jordan for moving again. It could have had anything on it, but they were just getting started on their tour, so the likelihood it had already been tarnished with some sort of bodily fluid was low. By the third or fourth leg of the tour, you never knew what kind of funk it could be contaminated with.

“Just let it go, Los.”

“Why?” Los asked. “You’ve been sprung on this guy since….”

Silas knew it was hard for all of them to talk about it and they still tended to trail off whenever the topic was brought up.

“He did a beautiful piece about Gavin,” Brains said softly as he slid into the booth next to Silas and rubbed at the stubble on Silas’s freshly shaved head. “Unlike the rest of the press. If I never have to talk to another reporter….”

Silas dropped his head on Brains’s shoulder. “You won’t have to.” Brains was right. The press had crucified the band after Gavin’s death, and they’d all agreed only Silas would give interviews from then on. There were several news sources that were persona non gratawith them. Brains was their drummer and truly their rock. Without his determination, songwriting talent, and experience in the business, there was no way they would have made it through the last two years. “Sorry we woke you up. It’s Los’s fault.”

“It’s all right. I wasn’t sleeping. I was watching one of Chris Motionless’s makeup videos. I fucking love how he does his eyes.”

Brains loved makeup and had a huge obsession with shows on horror- and fantasy-inspired art. He’d brought his kit with him to the table to experiment. Silas often let him practice on him. His stage makeup creations were badass.

Los threw the rag back and Silas caught it. “He’s got to meet him,” he insisted. “It’s the last Warped!”

“How do we make this happen?” Brains asked. “Oh, I know. Let’s hit the socials. Spread the word out that we want the Guru to come to my TEI workshop. We’ll send him a free ticket if he’ll come.”

“Yeah, put it on your Snapchat story, Silas,” Los said. “You have an assload of followers. Someone is bound to see it.”

“And what do I say, huh? ‘Gee whiz, Guru. Pretty please, come to my drummer’s workshop for a meet-cute’? That’s lame.”

“No one knows who he is for a reason,” Silas said. “Just forget it.”

Silas didn’t want to get his hopes up. Again. He needed positivity. This tour was going to be hard enough. It was his first time touring without Gavin, and while he was confident the album was a great showcase for their new guitarist, Jordan Barrett, and held enough of Gavin’s spirit to be a hit, he was on edge. They needed this summer to be huge, or else it was time to wrap up Hush and move forward in his life without his true loves—music and his best friend.

“If it’s meant for you guys to meet, it’s gonna happen,” Brains.

“I don’t know. You really believe in that kind of fate shit?”

Silas wanted to. Oh, how he wanted to. But the next part of that wish was that the Guru was just as incredible in person as he was in his writing, and that was probably pushing his luck.

“You know I believe it,” Brains said. “Fate has always kept me going. It’s what brought us together, right?”

True, the formation of their band had been a sort of kismet. Brains, Los, Gavin, and Silas had all been in the same place in their lives with all the magical elements that made their music stand out among their metalcore brethren. If Brains wanted to chalk it up to some mystical force, Silas could buy that.

“Fate is a powerful thing,” Jordan said as he wandered back over with a beer. “You never know when it’s your time, am I right? I never thought I’d end up with you guys, and here we are.”

Los fist-bumped him. “Damn right and a-fucking-men for that.”

Brains and Silas joined in the fist bumps, which turned into some weird, obscure Wonder Twins Power references, and pretty soon they were all cracking up.

Yeah, Fate had been fickle with Silas and his band. She’d given them the world on a platter, then yanked it away. Everything had crashed and broken into pieces, but she was slowly putting them back together. Would she continue to grace them this summer?

Original Post #7 - The Influences: Part Two

In the previous post, I shared several artists who helped mold the sound of  the band Hush in my new series. But the music is also the setting of the book. The Vans Warped Tour is a music festival that feeds the souls of music lovers from many genres.  Music always inspires my writing, and often times the music I’m listening to at the time shapes characters, scenes, and moods in my stories. Here are more of the musicians/bands you will see mentioned in the book and here is the link to my playlist for the book so you can check it out! I’d love for these artists to inspire you as well. Not all of them played Warped Tour, but their influence can be heard in the tour’s bands, both real and the fictional ones I’ve created. Enjoy!
Judas Priest - Judas Priest was one of the first metal bands I fell head over heels in love with and they are still a driving force in today’s music scene. Their last album was heavy and powerful and though they are currently on their farewell tour, their influence has been huge on today’s bands. But more than the music, when Rob Halford came out as gay in the 90s, metal fans were shocked, but you know what? Few of their fans seemed to care. The metal community can actually be quite inclusive and tolerant of differences, especially today’s top bands. Rob Halford remains “The Metal God,” and for guys like Silas, Brains, and Krish, he’s a role model and idol.
The Maine - Okay, these guys are definitely more alternative pop than I usually like but they’re a bunch of cuties and quite popular on Warped Tour. Plus, Jake digs them.
Falling In Reverse - Ronnie Radke formed this band after a brief stint in Escape the Fate. He’s a bit of an antihero. The few times I’ve seen them live they’ve been various levels of entertaining. Sometimes Ronnie struts around and pretends to be bored, other times, he gives his all and is a consummate professional. They definitely have some classics in their catalog and they’re worth watching live just to see what Ronnie will do next.
KISS - The shock rock pioneers from Detroit have influenced many young musicians since they burst onto the scene in the 1970s in their black and white face makeup, sparkly Spandex suits and platform boots. In today’s metalcore scene, the use of makeup is commonplace and some of the bands are phenomenally talented and creative. I love KISS for their legacy and have a few favorite tunes, but honestly they keep creeping into my stories because so many musicians love them.
Avenged Sevenfold - The darlings from SoCal who blended hardcore punk and metal, A7X has been through the grief of losing a band member and the challenge to rise from the ashes and move forward. Their sound is so unique, once you hear the voice of M. Shadows or the twin guitar powerhouses of Zacky V and Synyster Gates you know exactly what’s in store. Many of their songs are mini symphonies of darkness and grit. So I kind of dig them, if you couldn’t tell. They’ve long since moved on from the Warped Tour scene, but they are one of metalcore’s most successful pioneers.
I Prevail - Because their song “Stuck In Your Head” is brilliant.
New Year’s Day - I’m drawn to this band because of Ash’s energy and attitude and the band’s dark and catchy sound. Their look is amazing, they’re huge horror fans, and they are pretty damn funny when you hear them interviewed (see my Tour Bus Life post as part of this blog tour). They’re amazing live and I hope the best for them moving forward!
Sevendust - LJ Witherspoon and company formed in the late 90s and were part of the second wave of nu-metal. They’ve gotten better and better with every album and I’m DYING to see them live. The first time I did I had to cut the set short because my daughter (who was 11 at the tine) was hungry, and the second time was at the three-day massive rock festival in Columbus, Ohio Rock on the Range and the sound was muddy on one side of the arena. I absolutely love them and couldn’t resist throwing them in because they represent that bridge in metal between nu-metal and metalcore.

EXCERPT

A light tap caught my attention, and I looked up to see Tony and Snow standing there. Snow, ever his curious self, was looking up, down, and around, absorbing it all, never to forget.

“Thank you, Tony, I’d like to speak with Snow alone, and then perhaps, if he has further questions pertaining to security and what you know, the two of you can talk later.”

“Okay, holler if you need me.” He smiled at Snow who nodded, and then left the room.

It wasn’t so much an uncomfortable silence as it was worrisome. Snow wasn’t a quiet person. He spoke up for everything he believed in, and on many occasions, gave me a good tongue lashing. To see him walking through my office and not making eye contact with me was jarring.

“Snow?” He jumped when I spoke but turned my way. “Would you like a drink?”

He chuckled, but it held very little humor. “What’s the strongest thing you’ve got?”

Ahh, so he was having trouble with all this. Understandable. I walked over to the small cart with some beverages and poured us each a Jack and ginger ale. I knew he didn’t like drinking because of his father, but he wasn’t kidding that he wanted a drink.

“Thanks,” he said as he took the drink and sipped it. “So, this is really weird.”

I couldn’t argue with that. “Did you read my note?”

He rolled his eyes at my obviously stupid question. “I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t. You have Jason Momoa over there come to my house, tell me he can’t say much but to read this thing and to follow him. You’re lucky Christopher wasn’t home, or Bill for that matter, or I wouldn’t have been able to sweet talk Donny into trusting my life choices and going with Aquaman.”

The Musician and the Monster by Jenya Keefe - Blog Tour with Giveaway

About the Book
Hatred is a spell only true love can break.
Ángel Cruz is a dedicated session musician, until loyalty to his estranged family forces him to work for Oberon: the feared and hated envoy from the Otherworld. Overnight, Ángel is taken from his life, his friends, his work, and trapped in a hideous mansion in the middle of nowhere, under constant surveillance, and with only the frightening fae for company.
Oberon’s poor understanding of humans combined with Ángel’s resentment and loneliness threaten to cause real harm to the pair. Then a long winter together in the mansion unites them in their love of music. Slowly, Ángel’s anger thaws, and he begins to realize that Oberon feels alone too.
Gradually, these two souls from different worlds form a connection like none other. But hate and prejudice are powerful things, and it’ll take all the magic of their love to stop the wider world from forcing them apart.
Now available from Riptide Publishing!

Wait, did you say reptilian?
The Monster and the Musician used to be about an alien.

A long time ago, I read a science fiction retelling of Beauty and the Beast, in which the Beast was an alien visitor from another planet. I loved the idea, but didn't like the execution. And so the first version of this story - Ángel and the Alien - was born.

In that version, the fae Oberon was an alien named Kepler (like Oberon, his true name was nearly unpronounceable to humans, so he was given a human name), and he communicated via chemical signals in his skin.  He was beautiful and frighteningly inhuman and very lonely, just like Oberon. He might have been a little reptilian.

When my editor suggested that readers might respond better to this character if he was more magical and less snakeish, I couldn't really disagree. So began the Great Rewrite, transforming a science fiction story into a fantasy one.

I think it's better; the only thing I'm sad about is the title change. Ángel and the Alien was a great title.
