Roman “Quick” Webb is one badass bounty hunter on the crime-filled streets of Atlanta. He’s fearless when it comes to carrying out his dangerous job alongside his longtime best friend and business partner, Duke. However, there is one thing that has begun to cause Quick concern and it’s the dreadful thought of living out the rest of his life alone. Seeing his best friend and his son fall in love and sharing the special connection that only true soulmates can, has made him all the more aware of what’s lacking in his life.
Love.
Dr. Cayson Chauncey has been wildly attracted to the big, tattooed hunter for almost a year, ever since he performed the surgery that saved Quick’s best friend’s life. Cayson must’ve mistaken Quick’s gratitude for something more, because the one time he tried to make his desires known, he was harshly rebuffed and left on the man’s doorstep feeling stupid for hitting on an obviously very straight man.
Cayson never dated a man who was willing to come out of hiding and be with him. Now at almost forty, Cayson is intent on no longer being anyone’s dirty secret. Having experienced countless disappointments, and having taken a stand not to fall for any more tricks, Cayson is more than a little skeptical when Quick comes around asking for a second chance to prove himself. The gorgeous man had already made it clear he was definitely uninterested in Cayson… or so he’d thought.
Dr. Chauncey stirred up Quick’s suppressed, most carnal desires from a place deep down inside of him. He’d reacted so badly the first time that now his sexy surgeon wanted nothing to do with him. It was going to take a fair amount of patience and a whole lot of wooing involved as Quick sets out to convince Cayson that he’s worth another chance and that he is the brave lover who Cayson has been looking for.
With a scorned ex and a very dangerous job thrown into the mix, Cayson’s happiness and all of Quick’s promises may not be as easy to keep as they’d hoped.

PARTS ONE AND TWO IN THIS SERIES CAN BOTH BE READ AS STANDALONES. THERE ARE NO CLIFFHANGERS IN EITHER BOOKS.

Excerpt:

“Stop knocking on my damn door like that!” Quick shouted
from the second landing. He was trying to navigate the short
distance between him and the front door, but was moving slowly.
Using his leaf blower in the yard earlier today probably wasn’t a
great idea, but he’d never been one to sit around and wallow in
pain. He came from a long line of tough men. His father worked
their farm through every ailment he ever got, so did his
grandfather. Surely, Quick could do the same.

When he unlocked the bolt, he twisted the knob and was
almost knocked back off his feet when he saw Dr. Chauncey –
um, Cayson – standing there on his porch with his large medical
bag at his feet. He had on a puffy, mid-thigh, black North Face
parka with the large hood trimmed with tawny brown fur. He
looked adorable all bundled up and rosy cheeked from the brisk
temperature.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to knock like I’m the police. I got a
little worried when it took a while. I came... um... Duke told
me... he said maybe I should come by. Totally his idea. I promise
I’m not just swinging by. As a matter of fact, I think it’s rather
rude to stop by unannounced, but Duke said—”

“Cayson, would you like to come in and get out of the cold
for a bit?” Quick smiled, pulling the door open wider. The man
was blabbering like a silly fool. But Quick new exactly why
Cayson was nervous about coming into his home again. He’d
make sure the man felt welcome this time.

He wasn’t typically an asshole, especially to nice doctors
who saved his best friend’s life, but damn if Cayson didn’t catch
him off guard that afternoon he’d come home to find the sexy
doctor in his personal space. He was supposed to be there to
check up on Duke and Vaughan’s recovery, but Cayson was
examining everything but his patients when Quick had come in
wearing his bounty hunting gear. Those focused, blue eyes
brazenly surveyed him like he was a piece of USDA prime rib in
a butcher’s window. He could see Cayson’s chest rise and fall
with his elevated, lustful breathing. But to do it right in front of
his son and Duke, that wasn’t cool. He was a private man. If the
doctor was interested in him, then he should’ve approached
Quick privately and asked him out like a real man, not used
trickery.

He’d been attracted to men in the past – very deep past – but
he’d married a woman and had dated a couple more after the
divorce. Now, this handsome, sexy, slightly nerdy in a charming
way surgeon was rapidly igniting embers that hadn’t burned in a
long time, and Quick had handled it badly, scaring Cayson off.
He’d promised Duke and Vaughan that he’d fix it. He’d call the
doctor and apologize, make things right, but he hadn’t. He’d
copped out. Nerves. Anxiety. Maybe even fear had gripped and
held him fast.

“Actually, I wouldn’t mind coming in. Thank you.” Cayson
took a breath between ramblings and hefted his large bag to step
across the threshold.

Quick immediately noticed Cayson scanning his chest as he
walked by, but he didn’t take offense this time. The man was a
doctor and Quick was riddled with bruises. It was clear Cayson
had been sent by his son or Duke to check him out. “I already
know why you’re here. Thank you for coming.”

Excerpt:

Vincent Sweetwater twisted the Harley’s throttle. The power in the motor thrummed between his legs. The bike seemed heavy, angry; like she wanted to fall flat on her face. Like she yearned to drag him across the gritty asphalt. Vince needed to feel the pavement shred his clothing and bite into his skin. Punishment for being a man who thrived on suffering.
Why can’t I control myself, damn it?
-You’re supposed to be one of the good guys.
Fuck off.
-Stop drinking, Sweetwater.
Vince envisioned choking the life out of his conscience. The damn thing made it difficult to be an asshole, yet somehow he didn't let it stop him. Nothing stopped him from being a dick to his wife. Vince squeezed the throttle. The speed would numb his mind.
The machine growled beneath him, giving her two fucking cents, and he ignored the wanton slut. Vince was too malicious to give her what she craved. If he did, there would be no turning back.
Still, the iron bitch demanded more power. Urged by a quiet whisper from somewhere in the darkness of his mind, Vince let off the throttle long enough to grasp the clutch and toe it into sixth.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Michele Micheal “Mikey” Rakes, author of Trainwreck the series.
Hi Mikey, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

      1)      Was there a basis for your story? A previous experience or something else?
There is a lot of me in Vincent Sweetwater. The dark shit that lives in my brain, lives in his, and we both deal with our demons in a similar fashion. I understand him and he gets me. So many of went through some form of abuse and Vince has to deal with his and maybe I do as well. A bit of catharsis. Life is difficult in this brain sometimes, but I’m doing my best to make it habitable. So does Vince.

      2)     What skills do you think a writer needs?
A love of research…and absolute desire to bring the reader deep into their world. Also, creating a world complete with subplots, supporting characters, and interesting MC’s is very nearly a disorder of the brain. I can’t shut them up. They want out at the most inopportune moments and a writer needs to learn to balance that out with the rest of their life. We’re all half mad, don’t you know?

      3)     What for you is the perfect book hero?
I like my hero’s imperfect. They seem more real that way. Someone who is perfect never struggles and if they don’t have to hammer through life just to breathe another day, to wrestle with their morals, sanity, and their past, then no matter how well plotted a story is…won’t grab me. I want my heroes to crawl from the mud and be just as shocked as everyone else to find them alive and sane.

      4)     Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Everything is challenging when it comes to writing, from concept, to characters, from word choice and sentence structure. What kind of mood a writer wants to set an be conveyed in any number of ways. Determining what works when and where is the challenge. Currently, my biggest challenge is finding the time to write and edit.

      5)     Tell us about your favorite childhood book.
The Dancers of Arun by Elizabeth A. Lynn. I read it when I was thirteen and if left a long lasting impression. I highly recommend it. It’s about a young man who had been separated at a young age from his family due to war. When he turns eighteen, his brother who is a revered dancer of Arun, comes to the north to bring him home to their home in the South. It’s about him learning that what was deemed a disfigurement and a disability by people in the north is seen as nothing ugly or inhibiting to his people of the south. It’s his journey of self love as well as learning about life and sex outside the keep.

Mac turned. Trelain rocked what he guessed would be called a dressing gown. It was a long robe, but more substantial than a bathrobe, and clearly made of silk. Far from an English country-house paisley, this was in some watercolor print of aqua and gold. I must be allergic to silk because, man, it is tough to breathe. In that get-up, the person in front of him could be a woman, and a very beautiful one at that. The face was a really handsome guy, but the golden hair softened everything. Jeez, it played with his mind.

“Mac?”

Shit. He’d been staring. “Yeah. Here’s the stuff.” He pulled the little bottle from his jacket pocket where he’d stashed it in the restaurant.

Trelain took it and walked toward the kitchen, putting the analgesic in his robe pocket. “Can’t I tempt you with something more interesting than water? Some champagne, perhaps?” He didn’t wait for an answer—just removed the foil on the bottle and opened the cage with the precise six turns. Mac knew that piece of erudite trivia from the story he’d done on champagne last year. Trelain applied a thumb to the cork and, pop, it opened with the soft sound that indicated he knew what he was doing and hadn’t damaged the wine. He poured into the sides of two flutes and held one out to Mac. “Come sit.”

Trelain installed himself on the couch, set down his glass, pulled the little bottle from his pocket and opened it. He sniffed tentatively.

Mac laughed. “It won’t bite, I promise. Just drip some into your palm and then apply it to the area that hurts. I’d better get a washcloth so you can wipe clean afterward.” He walked to the kitchenette, found a clean towel, wet it then crossed to the chair. Trelain dropped a little of the blue liquid with the strong cinnamon smell into his long, slender hand. He sniffed again, raised a leg onto the couch, and uncovered himself up to his thigh. Shee-it. He’d seen his parents’ feet and legs thousands of times, but this felt…intimate. Trelain’s feet were heavily callused, the toes pushed together as only a true dancer’s could be. And the leg? It looked more like something carved from marble than from flesh. Sculpted, hard as stone.

Trelain began to run the scented liquid over the back of his calf and up onto his thigh. Jesus, he was playing patty-cake. “No, dig in. Really work it into the muscles.”

Trelain dug in for a couple of strokes but then pulled back his hands and shook them. Yeah, massaging marble couldn’t be easy. But crap, his leg hurt, and the magic blue stuff could help if he just did it right. Mac shook his head. “That’s not going to get the job done.”

“Sorry. I’m spoiled. I have a masseuse that travels with the company.”

In frustration, Mac rose and sat beside the man on the couch, handing him the damp towel. He grabbed the bottle from the table and dotted some of the warming liquid into his palm. “Here, let me.” He grabbed the dancer’s foot, pulled it into his lap, and began rubbing the carved muscle of Trelain’s leg with deep, penetrating strokes. “Like this.” One stroke, and he knew this was not his father. In fact, it was a hell of a mistake.

The beautiful head hit the back of the couch. “Chyort! That feels incredible.” Trelain moaned. Mac tried to pretend he didn’t feel the satin texture of that skin, like silk over steel.

Mac cleared his throat. “You, uh, really have to dig in, this way.” Mac’s fingers pushed into hard muscle, the liquid warming his fingers. Yeah, it wasn’t his fingers he was worried about. Why was he doing this?

Trelain moaned luxuriously, his head moving back and forth against the couch. That wasn’t all that was moving. Holy shit. This wasn’t happening. The front of the silk robe rose like an expensive tent. Wasn’t the guy wearing any underwear under that thing?

He felt like a damned snake charmer. He couldn’t look away or stop doing the thing making that serpent rise. He just kept rubbing. Trelain’s eyes stayed closed. Most guys would make a joke. He said nothing.

Scotty Bell has spent years learning to channel his fiery temper into the heat of a welding torch. His sexual heat has always been slower to ignite, but one look at Mick rouses confusion alongside desire. In all his life, he’s only been attracted to one other person—his best friend, Mercy Taylor.

Mick lands a temporary job at the yard, and finds an uneasy crash pad at Scotty’s place…where the ragged ends of his emotions get tangled up in Scotty and Mercy’s relationship.

But when Mick hears a Harley engine from his past bearing down on him, his first instinct is to go back to the half-life he’d been living. Lest his secrets destroy the only two people who’ve ever made him feel whole.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Charley Descoteaux, author of Torque.

Hi Charley, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Thank you for having me!

1) What’s the easiest thing about writing?

The characters. I have so many characters living in my head I’d have to live 300 years to write them all. And new ones pop up all the time.

2) Name one author (living or dead) you’d like to write with?

Janet Fitch. I met her a little while after the film version of White Oleander was made and she was very kind, easy to talk to, and supportive of other authors. I also love her style, she reminds me of Tool or Tom Waits: heartbreaking stories and beautiful words/melodies. If you mean another author of LGBTQ+ Romance, that’s a dangerous question. *lol*

3) Tell us about your cover and how it came about.

The cover for Torque is proof of Kanaxa’s awesome talent! I asked for something simple and angsty, and she nailed it on the first try. I love this cover so hard, it’s perfectly Mick.

4) Is this book part of a series? Do you have ideas that could make it into a series? If it is a series, tell us a little about it.

No, I don’t think I’ll write any more stories about Mick, Scotty, and Mercy. I’m sure they’ll have more adventures but in most Romances once the players make a commitment the story is basically over—unless they go on to solve murders or take down interstellar conspiracies, or something cool like that. I doubt anyone will be stumbling into Bell’s Auto Wrecking gasping their last breath or asking for help to find their lost loved one, though. I wouldn’t mind checking in with them at some point in the future but at the moment I don’t see how that would happen.

5) Word association. Tell us the first thing that comes to mind when you read these words.
Ketchup: hot dog
Flakes: strawberries
Elastic: snap!
Timer: write! (Close second: pizza!)
Google: research

Mick slept on the couch for two weeks before Scott let him get dinner. Mick brought a pizza, hot wings and a six-pack. When he offered Scott a beer, Mick thought for a second he was about to get decked.

“No thanks, I don’t drink. But you go ahead.”

Mick put five bottles in the fridge and popped the top on the sixth. The long pull of rich beer felt like cool water after he’d been walking for weeks in the desert.

“Never?”

“Nope. I got enough of that before I was even born, I don’t need any more.”

It only took half a beer for Mick to get past the uncomfortable feeling he should’ve asked Scott to tell him more, or that he should’ve switched to Mountain Dew. Scott rented an On Demand movie, something forgettable with vampires, and they sat in their places on the couch and divided their attention between the movie and the pizza for the next two hours. Tom camped out in his usual spot between their thighs, graciously accepting all the chicken and pepperoni tributes offered to him.

After the movie was over they watched another one on HBO, but didn’t pay much attention to it. Mick had a nice buzz going and was happy to sit back and listen to Scott talk about his project—the VW Microbus he was converting into a flatbed. A warm, fuzzy feeling Mick almost didn’t recognize as happiness set up camp in his gut, and life was good.

He thought, more than once or twice, that Scott leaned toward him in a way that was a little more than friendly, but it had to be the beer.

Too bad.

Mick jerked in surprise when he realized he’d started to lean toward Scott. He had no right to be “more than friendly” to Scott. None at all.

Scott reached out to grasp his shoulder. “You okay, Mick?”

“Uh, yeah.”

“Are you ready for bed?” Scott kneaded his shoulder, sending a current through his body.

“The movie isn’t over.”

“It’s not very good. If you don’t want to finish it, that’s okay with me.” Scott smiled and sat back against the couch, releasing Mick’s shoulder.

He couldn’t help himself, he leaned forward. Only a little bit. He didn’t want to lose Scott’s touch. In that moment, he couldn’t think of anything more important than Scott touching him, not even self-preservation.

Mick Randall wasn’t a stranger to self-medicating with alcohol but before he found Bell’s he hadn’t had a lot of money to spare, and lately he hadn’t had the time. Together, those circumstances had turned him into a lightweight. That had to be the explanation for why he saw a come-on in every glance and heard innuendo where surely Scott didn’t mean any. He’d have to be a lightweight to want so badly to respond to Scott’s touch with an embrace.

Maybe I should quit drinking.

Mick wasn’t capable of walking in a straight line by the time he hit the can, but it didn’t matter. Four beers was plenty and he’d take the other two out of Scott’s fridge the next day and remember not to bring more. If he wanted a drink, he wouldn’t have to drive far. When he left the bathroom his thoughts centered on that warm, happy feeling, and what he could get up to the next day. Before he knew what was happening, Scott had him backed against the wall, both hands spread across his chest.

All that fuzzy warm happiness disappeared, replaced by a tiny shiver of panic mixed with a side of relief. The relief tangled with a mix of “fucking finally” and “what the fuck” that made Mick dizzy. Or maybe that’s just the beer.

“Scott. Maybe I should sleep somewhere else tonight.”

“Yeah. Like in my bed with me.”

“I was thinking like my car, or a motel.”

Scott frowned and pushed him back against the wall harder, caressing his chest and shoulders as he did. The contrast of the unyielding wall against his shoulder blades and the man in front of him spun Mick’s head around once. “You don’t feel anything like Mercy. I knew you wouldn’t.”

“Don’t you think Mercy would—”

“She wouldn’t care. I’m not the only one she fools around with.” Scott leaned against him, chest to chest, close enough to kiss.

“Let me go.” Mick took hold of Scott’s shoulders and tried to push him back, but Scott was stronger than he looked.

“No. I don’t want to.”

“What am I supposed to do now?” Mick couldn’t see a clear path to the door. Panic reared up in the back of his mind—he had no game plan for this, no idea what his part should be.

“You can let me blow you. Or you can blow me. I don’t care who goes first. You want me, don’t you?”

Mick tried to speak but couldn’t. He couldn’t get a decent breath either, not with Scott’s hands on him. He nodded and tried to pull himself together.

“Haven’t you ever hooked up before?”

“Yeah.” Liar.

“Well, so have I. I’m not a little kid. You don’t have to—”

“I know you’re not.” Mick squeezed Scott’s shoulders, anxious to learn how his skin felt over those hard muscles, how those muscles looked when he moved. “I know.”

“So why—”

“I’ve hooked up before.”

“So why not with me?”

“Because it’s different with you. I mean, it would be— I can’t…”

“You think I’m an idiot? Too dumb to know what to—”

“No! No. That has nothing to do—” Mick saw something in Scott’s eyes that made the rest of that sentence turn to dust in his throat. He swallowed hard and was about to—no idea what he was about to do, but he couldn’t stand there forever—when he saw something else that stopped him. “You’re shaking.”

“Yeah.” Scott’s voice had a hard edge so when he surged forward, his erection pressing against Mick’s thigh, it was unexpected.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m trying to keep from punching you in the face.”

“Why do you want to punch me in the face?”

“Because you’re pushing me away. I thought you liked me.”

“I do like you. But—”

“Don’t say it’s not right. I’m dumb but I’m not—”

“I didn’t say you were dumb. You’re not dumb.” Mick could barely speak past his desire, so his last few words came out as breathless as he felt. He’d started panting and the sound filled the short hallway. “Please don’t punch me in the face.”

Scott frowned, but fear and pain was mixed up with the anger and desire showing in his light bottle-green eyes. Mick felt it all right along with him.

“Maybe I should go.”

When Scott didn’t respond Mick slid against the wall, sideways. In just a few steps, Mick wasn’t supporting all of Scott’s weight anymore, didn’t feel his tense muscles or his heat. Mick gingerly pushed off from the wall and walked backward, toward the living room.

“You don’t have to.”

“I think I do.” Mick sat on the sofa to pull on his boots and Scott dropped onto the cushion beside him. Mick straightened, one boot on and one off, and Scott grabbed him and kissed him.
