Book blurb:

Eight months ago Jude Lucen fled his partner, his career, and a hospital in Boston after a suicide attempt. Now back in Philadelphia, he feels like a complete failure. Piano has always been his passion and his only escape. Without it, he has nothing. Well, nothing except a pathetic crush on the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen.

Faron Locklear came to Philly looking for a fresh start and has thrown himself into tattooing at Small Change. He’s only met Jude a few times, but something about the red-haired man with the haunted eyes calls to him. Faron is blown away by Jude’s talent. What he isn’t expecting is the electricity he feels the first time they kiss—and the way Jude’s needs in bed speak directly to his own deepest desires.

Jude and Faron fall fast and hard, but Jude has spent a lifetime learning that he can’t be what the people he loves need. So when the opportunity arises to renew his career in Boston, he thinks he has to choose: music, or Faron? Only by taking a huge risk—and finally believing he’s worthy of love just as he is—can he have the chance for both.

The Small Change series is set in the Middle of Somewhere universe and features crossover characters from that series. Each book can be read on its own.

Content warning: This book contains explicit discussion of depression, anxiety, attempted suicide, and feelings of worthlessness.

Excerpt :

Faron pulled me to my feet easily but didn’t let go of my hand. He drew me to him slowly—so slowly that I had time to pull away a dozen times.
My heart pounded as my chest drew flush with his and he wrapped his arms around me. It felt like sighing with my entire body. I hugged him back, pressing my palms against the musculature of his back. We stood there, entwined, just breathing, and I wanted to stay like that forever.
Tears pricked my eyes. It had been so damned long since anyone had held me, just held me, with nothing else at stake.
When Faron eased off like he might let go, I squeezed him back to me. Often, my sensitive sense of smell made me recoil from human scents. But he smelled good. Something fresh like grass and something warm like amber, and beneath it something dark and musky. The second I pulled him tight, his hand went to my hair. He tugged the elastic out and ran his fingers through it. I only heard his breath catch faintly because my ear was pressed close to his chest.
“Is this okay?” he murmured, one hand on my back and the other combing through my hair.
“Feels good.”
I kept my eyes closed as he worked the tangles out of my messy hair. I let it wash over me that, no matter how affectionate Faron was, this was probably more than a hug of friendship. I told myself that over and over, since I was capable of finding any of a hundred reasons to excuse the intimacy of his fingers in my hair and his arms around me. My stomach fluttered and I made myself breathe deeply in rhythm with the rise and fall of Faron’s chest.
There was a whistling noise, and then the scream of the teakettle, and Faron broke away, moving quickly to the stove as Waffle started snarling and my heart pounded.
Well. So much for the most peaceful I’d felt in years.
Faron turned the stove off but didn’t make the tea. He came back to me and looked at me intently. His eyes were intense. Searching.
I held my hand out, not even sure what I was reaching for, and he tangled his fingers with mine.
“Can I kiss you?” His voice was so soft I thought I’d imagined it for a moment. But when I nodded, he squeezed my hand and cupped my cheek with his other palm. Then he leaned in and kissed me. His mouth was luscious and my heart was racing at the first touch. The closeness of him, the press of his lips, was so intimate that I felt dizzy. He stroked my cheekbone with his thumb and eased back, thick lashes half lowered over his beautiful gray-brown eyes.

Prologue
Saul

It’s tough being a demon in this day and age. Times are hard and souls just aren’t what they used to be. I should know; it’s my job to collect them. Or try to, anyway. What I wouldn’t give to go back to the good ol’ days when you could buy a soul as easily as an apple at the marketplace. And I mean a proper apple, plucked straight from the tree that morning. None of this modified, refrigerated crap that passes as fresh fruit nowadays.

I know what you’re thinking. Trust me; I’ve heard it all before. You’re wondering how it could be so hard to get someone to sign away their soul in an age when everything can be obtained for a price, when everything is for sale. Actors, bankers, politicians. You’d think rich pickings; am I right? Well, you’d be wrong.

Problem is that no one believes anymore. Picture this: I walk up to someone and offer to grant them anything their heart desires in exchange for their soul. Now, in times past they’d either tremble in fear and drop to their knees, praying to the guy upstairs (my cue to leave), or they’d tremble in fear for a moment and then sign on the dotted line. Simple. Everyone knew where they stood. But if I were to try that today, most people would laugh in my face and walk off, or else they’d look uneasy and slink away from the ‘deranged lunatic’ as soon as possible. Hell, I miss the fear.

The faith is gone, you see, supplanted with technology, gizmos, and gadgets. An age of information. Everything you want, obtainable at the press of a button. What is there to long for anymore? What is there worth selling your soul for that you couldn’t get another way? Sure, you still have the old standards, the favourites—riches, power, and sex—but as I said, the belief is sadly lacking.

Every passing year it gets harder and harder to fill my quota. I have the boss breathing fire down my neck—both metaphorically and literally—and damned if I know how to get around the problem. It’s not just me. My colleagues are equally exasperated. It won’t be too much longer until it’s impossible to sign up even one new soul to burn in everlasting Hell. Then what’s a conscientious, hard-working demon to do?

Anyhow, I guess it’s about time I introduced myself. The name’s Saul. Yeah, I know, but it’s not like I picked it. We get what the boss dishes out, and I drew the short straw that day. Guess he was in one of his funny moods. I’m here today following a mark. I’m actually pretty stoked I found this guy, as he’s shaping up to be the most promising potential soul-seller I’ve seen in several months. Hey, try saying that three times fast! The trick now is not to rush things, not to push him too hard or too fast.

Oh, here he comes. See if you can pick him from the crowd. No? Hard, isn’t it? Everyone looks the same these days. It used to be so much easier to tell a sinner from a saint. Now the line is so blurred it barely exists at all.

But I digress. Just wait a moment… There! See the guy heading into the pub? The one in the Marvel T-shirt? With the blond curls? That’s our man. Bit of a stereotype of a comic-book nerd, isn’t he? Unlikely to sell his soul, you think? Well, we’ll soon see.

LEANING INTO THE LOOK

LANE HAYES
M/M ROMANCE
RELEASE DATE: 03.23.18

COVER ARTIST: REESE DANTE

BLURB

Grant Kostas made a career based on his looks before joining his family’s real estate firm. He may not love his job but he’s better at sales than he thought. And when he’s poised to bring in the biggest account of the company’s history, even his father is impressed. Unfortunately, the extra attention highlights Grant’s personal life. His parents accept that he’s gay. They just wish he’d meet a nice Greek man.

Miles Harrison is a fabulous red head going through a rough patch. Between getting dumped by his long-term boyfriend and finding a new place to live in the city, he’s nearing his wits end. He’s not sure why he thought rooming with his boss’s friend was a good idea. Miles has had a crush on Grant for years. However, he knows attractive people aren’t always pretty on the inside. As the two men grapple with external problems, they form an unexpected bond of friendship and trust that feels like the real thing. The only way to know for certain is to let go of fear and lean into the look.

EXCERPT

“You and I are opposites. You like quiet and order, and I thrive on chaos. I want everything you have and more. The boisterous family with the ancient traditions and food for days. I can’t even watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding without getting jealous. And that’s your real life.”

“Times ten,” I agreed with a half laugh.

Miles chuckled. “Humans are a mystery. Why are we never happy with what we have?”

I lowered my hand to his waist and hooked my fingers through his belt loop. “We don’t see well. We don’t know when to speak and when to listen. We don’t understand the nuances in taste and touch. Take your pick.”

“Mmm. Personally, I think we rely too heavily on looks. Physical appearances and perceived appearances. It takes patience and effort to really see the person under skin and bones. The scars and insecurities. To sift through their baggage while they do the same to you and cross your fingers, hoping like mad that you pass the test. It’s so…hard.”

“I’ve heard if you find the right partner it’s worth it,” I said softly.

Miles sighed and leaned heavily against my side. We fell silent for a moment, letting the squawk of seagulls and the medley of tourists’ voices mix with the occasional bark of a sea lion. We were part of a crowd and yet separate enough to hear our own thoughts.

“Thank you for today,” he said after awhile.

“I didn’t do anything special.”

“Sure you did. You took me on a date.”

“It wasn’t a real date. I can do better,” I assured him with a wry grin.

“No complaints here. Oh, except you made me walk three miles and—”

“Hey, at least I avoided the steeper streets.”

Miles snickered. “You were probably afraid I’d get tired and demand a piggyback ride.”

“Yeah, that did cross my mind,” I agreed sarcastically. “How about if I buy you a coffee for the walk back to the car?”

“Make it a hot chocolate and promise to hold my hand the whole way, and you’ve got yourself a deal,” he countered with a straight face.

My smile was so big it hurt. I enveloped him in a giant bear hug and pulled back to kiss his forehead. “Deal.”

I laced my fingers with his and pulled him through the crowd to the boardwalk. And I didn’t let go. Block after block through familiar city streets and eclectic neighborhoods, I kept him close, marveling at how right it felt just being with him. I noted his shy, pleased smile and cautioned myself not to read too much into the look. I didn’t want to ruin the mood by saying too much. But I knew it was a matter of time before I lost myself to Miles completely.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Leaning Into The Look is the sixth book in the Leaning Into series. While you could possibly read them as stand-alones, I'd recommend reading the books in order as you meet most of the characters in the series from the first book.

I think that this has become my favorite book in this series to date. I really enjoyed both main characters separately and when they were together. Miles and Grant are very different people but worked well together. Especially once they pulled their proverbial heads out of their asses and realized that they needed each other.

Miles is the complete and utter opposite of Grant for the most part. He's bold, and colorful, and tends to speak his mind but he also hides part of himself and says he doesn't want another relationship. Grant is reserved, except around his close group of friends. He struggled most of his life with issues, and no I'm not sharing what because that's a bit of a spoiler for a major portion of who Grant is. Miles has crushed on Grant for ages but neither have ever done anything about it until they just finally give in to that moment.

There's so many little things that if I share will give away the entire plot and I just can't do that because this is the kind of story that really needs to be read without giving away bits and pieces. Needless to say though.. this book worked well for me. The only drawback, and the reason for the missing half star, is that I would have loved to have seen more of Mile's POV just to get more of his inner dialogue and also his feelings. I think that would have added that extra little bit to this wonderful character.

Overall this was a really good story and it's also the last of the original circle of friends. So what's next in this series, if it's continuing, I'm not sure but I'm anxiously going to await it. This author is one of my favorites and her books tend to be auto-buys for me. I recommend that you pick up this one for a relaxing weekend read or better yet a fun spring break read.
