Patience

Despite being human, is Chad the mate Jamie is hoping for? Or did the gods give Jamie someone he couldn’t keep?

Jamie Ryan was almost ready to accept he’d never find his destined mate. They’re uncommon to begin with and same-sex versions downright rare. Since his gay best friend found a destined mate, Jamie figured he was out of luck. Until end of semester stress forces him to go through the full-moon shift early. Stuck in wolf form, he runs into none other than his destined mate. Who’s human.

Chad Sutton has always had good instincts. They served him well as a detective and continued on when he went private. Those instincts tell him there’s something about the dog that comes up to him while running away from animal control that isn’t quite right. He works to put the pieces together, but is unsuccessful until his dog turns into a human before his eyes.

Jamie has no idea what the mate bite of a shifter will do to a human. He’s terrified to try—and possibly kill his mate. They hunt for answers while working together on one of Chad’s cases. It’s easy to see they belong together, but Jamie fears the gods gave him someone he can’t keep.

Excerpt from Patience – Forbes Mates book 2

When the driver turned into the parking lot, he didn’t wait for Chad to pay. He got out and opened their door. And as soon as they’d climbed out, he leaned in, apparently expecting the dog to have peed on the seat.
Chad buried a snicker when the guy stood and looked almost disappointed. “I guess I’m not paying for a new seat.”
The driver glared at him. “I’ve had one too many dogs do that to me.”
Chad held his hands up. “Sorry! Listen, you can see he won’t piss on your seat. We need to go in here for a few.” Chad threw a thumb toward the pet store. “Then we’re going to need a ride back home. I’ll pay you to wait, okay?”
The driver looked from him to the dog and back again. “Pay me for the ride now and put in a new request.”
“Of course,” Chad said, taking out his phone. He finalized the trip in the Uber app, put in the request for the second trip, then turned to the dog when he’d finished. He wished he could put his finger on what was so different about the animal, but he couldn’t. Aside from being fucking huge. And intelligent. He was way too intelligent for a regular dog. That didn’t tell Chad much, though.
“Come on,” he said and headed for the store. He had no idea how he knew the dog would obey him, but he didn’t even question it. And, sure enough, as they stepped through the sliding door, the dog was right there with him.
They didn’t get more than a few feet into the store before they were stopped by a waif of a girl with flyaway black hair and a quick smile. “I’m sorry, sir, he needs to be on a leash.”
“That’s what I’m here for. I don’t have one. He won’t wander off or attack other animals, I promise.” Chad looked down at the dog. “Will you?”
Yet again, the dog displayed that uncanny intelligence and looked as if he was shaking his head.
Chad looked up to see the girl staring, wide-eyed, at the dog.
“Uh, okay. Just… keep him close, okay?”
“Of course,” Chad assured her, then looked back at the dog. “Let’s go.” He stopped and turned back to her. “Oh, could you direct me to the collars and leashes?”
She blinked at him but pointed to their left. “Aisle ten.”
Chad smiled his most disarming smile. “Thanks.” He grinned when she blushed, then waved and started walking toward the aisle. He frowned down at the whine from the dog. “What?”
The dog didn’t even look at him.
Chad forgot about it as he looked at the enormous selection of collars. “Holy shit. It’s been a long time since I had a pet. And the last time, Mom was the one to buy this stuff. Uh….” Chad looked down. “I’m guessing the double extra large on the collar, huh?”
The dog tilted his head and looked up.
Chad turned to the options, smirked, and picked up a bright pink one. “I know you can’t see color, but I think pink would go great with your fur.”
The dog sat back and pointedly licked his balls.
Chad laughed. “Yeah, yeah, you’re a boy. Well, then, purple.”
In answer, the dog put his head on the floor and his paws over his face.
“Fine, fine. Which would <i>you</i> pick?” Chad asked, as if he’d really get an answer.
The dog did, in fact, sit up and look at the collars. He tilted his head, then stood and nosed a big black one with spikes.
Chad laughed. “You don’t really strike me as a spiked collar kind of guy, though.” The dog huffed in reply, and Chad, remembering he was paying for the cab to wait, turned back to the collars. He spotted a simple brown leather one close to the top and pulled it off. “Hmm. I think this might be good for you, huh?”
He fitted it around the dog’s neck and realized it was actually a little <i>too</i> big. He went down to just the extra large and saw it fit well, with the requisite two fingers of space underneath. “You’re not going to take it off, are you?” he asked, then rolled his eyes at himself. “Why do I keep asking you questions? You’re not going to answer me.” The dog chuffed and Chad blinked. “Right. Uh, leash.” He picked the longest matching leather one they had, then headed back to the register. “Better get you a tag too,” he muttered.
The same waif rang up his purchases and gave him the code for the tag machine. After Chad had paid, she came around the counter. “Does he bite?”
Chad looked down. “You going to bite her?”
The dog managed to look offended. He huffed, turned to the girl, and nosed under her hand.
She laughed and petted him. “He’s huge. What is he? I don’t recognize the breed.”
“Great American Mutt,” Chad said, figuring it was close enough to true, and she laughed again. “There’s Alaskan malamute in him, but that’s all I’m sure of.”
“I’ve never seen one. I didn’t know they got this big.”
Chad shrugged a shoulder. “I’m pretty sure he’s unique in that aspect. Probably has some Great Dane or something to be that big. I, uh, need to get the tag.” He clipped the new leash to the dog’s collar and tugged gently.
It took him a moment to work through the screens—the touch was either not sensitive enough or it was too sensitive. Never in between. Finally he got to the part where he had to put in the name and he paused, stumped. He looked down. “What am I going to call you?”
The dog tilted his head again as if he was waiting to see what Chad would suggest.
He flipped through his mental files of dog names, but most of them were horribly mundane and this dog was anything but. “Fido? Spot?”
Yet again, the dog managed to look offended.
“Rover?”
The dog huffed.

Chad was having too much fun with this. “Hmm. Balls. I should call you Balls."

And check out the upcoming blog tour appearances below!

Thanks so much to Wicked Faerie’s for the space today! I'm going to do something I love with this post - a character interview! In this case it is with Noah, the current Alpha Prime and father of Tanner from Forbes Mates.

What's it been like being Alpha Prime?

Weird. *Noah laughs* Okay, not entirely. It’s a bit weird for me. There’s a lot more responsibility to prime than your garden-variety alpha. There are some perks, and there’s power, but anyone who takes it seriously doesn’t really think about that aspect of it. It’s a job, like any other job, with a lot of work involved. The food’s good… don’t tell my wife I said that, since she doesn’t cook much anymore. *looks around slightly uncomfortably*

What was your first thought when you saw Miguel and Luis?

That those boys looked downright terrified. I suppose I have made something of a reputation for myself. I once overheard some say they thought I’d be eight feet tall and be able to kill someone with my eyes. That’d come in handy, but I’m afraid that’s a bit of an overstatement. I—thankfully—don’t think the boys were really afraid of me though. More like they were afraid of my position and of what they were facing. I don’t blame them, after all they’d been through. And it infuriated me that we—wolves, I mean—could treat each other in such a horrible way. I should know—I’m not as old as, say, Nate in Santa Fe, but I’ve been around a few years and I’ve seen some of the terrible things. I just can’t understand where that kind of bigotry comes from. In shifted form, we look the same, no matter what our human skin color is, what our genitals are, or who we are mated to—chosen or not—and forming an opinion about someone based on any of these just doesn’t make any sense to me. My mother and father were the same way and that was way back before the equal rights movement in the United States. So, I was furious on their behalf, more than anything.

What has happened with the bigoted alphas since the vote took place?

The Angeles—the boy’s original pack—and Tonto Alphas and their betas have been removed from their positions. I don’t like to do things like that. In fact, the wolves as a rule are pretty hands-off when it comes to other packs or from the national headquarters to the packs. But I can’t forgive putting those boys through what they did and it’s one of the few things I have the discretion of doing. I had long talks with the San Jacinto alpha, as well as Mike in Gila and Nate in Santa Fe and I understood their positions a bit more. Given the situation, Mike and Nate did what they had to do. Both packs have older wolves and both alphas had to think of their packs as a whole. San Jacinto, on the other hand, wasn’t quite in the same situation, though he did have a pretty good reason for hesitating. Still, his pack wasn’t nearly as old or as few in number as Gila or Santa Fe. He’s been formally reprimanded, which basically means if there’s another dispute regarding his position or pack, he’ll be removed. I don’t think we’ll see problems with him again, though.

Being the father of a son who is gay, with LGBT extended family, what advice would you give to other parents with LGBT children?

The same I’d give to any parents. Teach them no one is better than anyone else. Teach them that their mate is their mate, regardless of who that mate is. Stand up for them if they do face people who want to discriminate based on their mate or their sexuality. And remember that the United States wolf population has spoken and we, as a whole, think it shouldn’t matter who a person’s mate it.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I look forward to seeing more acceptance and less bigotry among the wolves. I hope it continues to get better and less hostile. I think we could—and should—be better than the humans when it comes to acceptance. We know our gods and goddesses. We have wolves who have met our patron goddess. If that doesn’t mean we should believe them, then what does?   I hope you enjoyed the chat with Noah! We got to meet him in Devotion and talked with him throughout the Forbes Series. If you like him, you’ll get to see even more of him in Hope. Thanks again to Wicked Faerie’s for the space and thanks for reading!

They’re stunned to find, not only offers to join more than one pack, but that their struggle can shine light on a bigger problem–and make things better for LGBT wolves across the country.

EXCERPT

When they pulled into the Phoenix station, Miguel found himself annoyed that there didn’t seem to be anything nearby. He’d spent so much time in a city—a real, big city, with a McDonald’s and an In-N-Out on every corner—that to step outside and see nothing besides the bus station but an airport and desert was disheartening.

He shoved the thought off and found the text from his mamá with the Tonto alpha’s phone number. In a few moments, he had directions to a McDonald’s a little distance away by city bus and where to pick it up. They stored their bags in a locker and headed out.

But barely two hours later, he and Luis were once more waiting for a bus, this time with an even less friendly suggestion to move on. He couldn’t say the alpha was <em>hostile</em> necessarily, but the curled lip he got when he saw Miguel and Luis holding hands had said enough. The meeting had been very short, very tense, and ended with the alpha telling them there was a 2:45 a.m. bus from Phoenix going east and they “had better be on it.”

Miguel was already tired of that reaction. While the pack in Palm Springs hadn’t been nearly as mean, he knew quite well it was because they were same-sex mates. Three packs, so far—their original and two others—hadn’t wanted them.

“Maybe we shouldn’t tell them, Miguel.”

Miguel sighed and kissed the top of Luis’s head. “I was just thinking something like that. If we didn’t, if we maybe… made something up about why we left, perhaps we could at least stay for a while.”

Luis nodded. “We’ve only been gone, what… two days?”

Miguel had to think. “Just over twenty-four hours, actually.”

“Damn. It feels a lot longer.” Luis shook his head.

“It doesn’t help that we haven’t really slept. With any luck, Gila will want us. Or at least, let us stay for a bit. Maybe we can get jobs to earn some money.”

“That would be good. How much do we have left?”

Miguel pulled out the cash they still had and carefully counted it, while trying not to be obvious that was what he was doing. The bus station was fairly empty, but he didn’t want to start anything, especially because the best way he had to defend himself and Luis involved claws and fangs. “After the tickets to Deming, just over a hundred dollars. The tickets from Deming to Silver City are another thirty for the two of us. We could see about selling Mamá’s ring in Silver City, if we need to.”

“Let’s… let’s not do that until we are out of money.”

Hugging Luis close, Miguel nodded. “Yeah, I don’t want to either, if we can help it.”

They fell silent, occasionally glancing at the television in the corner, while keeping an eye on the Border Patrol officer sitting in another corner. They both had US driver’s licenses, but that didn’t mean much if he wanted to cause problems for them. He reminded himself to speak English. Then, trying not to worry, Miguel did his best to simply enjoy holding Luis. Luis’s breathing evened out, and Miguel did what he could to resettle his mate in the horribly uncomfortable metal nightmares they called bench seats.

He wasn’t sure if he was more relieved or more nervous when they could start lining up for the bus. He so wanted Gila to be where they could stay, if for no other reason than they could stop moving from place to place for a while. He buried both emotions so he didn’t alert Luis to anything, and they got in line.

Forgiveness by Grace R. Duncan - Blog Tour with Excerpt and Guest Post

Blurb

Nine years ago Eric Joyce went wolf when his chosen mate broke the bond, and he hasn’t walked on two legs since. Convinced he lost his friends when he ran out on them, he cut himself off from the pack. But a surprising visitor prods him back down the mountain, and he finds himself welcomed warmly.
Ben Arellano grew up in Texas with a human Catholic mother who didn’t understand a thing about wolves—and didn’t try to learn. He spent his whole life being told his wolf was a demon that needed to be exorcised, surrounded by a wolf pack made up of good ole boys who had no tolerance for his Mexican ancestry or his bisexuality. When he’s given the opportunity to relocate to an accepting pack in Pittsburgh, he jumps at the chance.
When Eric and Ben meet for the first time, neither is ready for it. Where Ben expects rejection, Eric is convinced yet another mate will leave, break the bond, and put him through the same hell all over again. Can they get past their reservations and have a happily mated life?

Learning to Wolf by Grace Duncan
Both Eric and Ben had problems with their other halves during the course of the book. Eric struggled with having to relearn all things human. At the same time, Ben had a similar, if opposite problem.

He didn’t know how to wolf.
Ben grew up in a house with a mother who didn’t understand his wolf and had no wish to try to understand. She believed it was a demon he needed to exercise. As such, shifting at home was out of the question. When many of the other young wolves were understanding how to trust their wolves and give over to instinct, Ben’s mother was spanking him for spontaneously shifting.
To make matters worse, Ben and his family were not overly welcome in their pack.
I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in Texas, where Ben is grew up. One of the things I have seen is a pretty big divide here between the Lantinx population (most of which are Mexican) and the good ole white boys. There are a lot of them.
I had two Latinx kids in my college class (of 3 students). I heard quite a bit from them about times and places they weren’t welcome or were talked to or about. My sister-in-law told me of more than a few instances when she was at the very least side-eyed and at most outright insulted for her heritage.
Racism is alive and well—and brutal—in this neck of the woods. (That’s not to say it isn’t everywhere. This is simply about what goes on around me here.) This racism extends into the packs in my books, especially the one here. The pack Ben and his family were part of was run mostly by the good ole white boys with the same type of attitude many of my Mexican friends/relatives have dealt with.
As such, his experience with learning to wolf were… lacking. Ben’s father did the best he could, but the wolves are part of a pack for a number of reasons, not the least of which is support for each other and their young.
Ben questions whether he is even good enough for Eric. The effects of the racism Ben faced travel with him and he is worried about how he’ll be received. But even more than that is how… useless… he feels as a wolf.
Chad, yet again, comes to the rescue. As a newly-made wolf, he has a unique perspective many of the others don’t. Jamie, Eric, Tanner, and Finley all grew up as wolves in close packs. They didn’t understand not being comfortable as a wolf. With Chad’s help, though—supported by Eric and Jamie—Ben finds himself a lot more welcome and, eventually, much more a part of the pack.

Ben nodded and let out a breath. “So, I should practice shifting?”
“Yeah, but not too many times or you’ll eat the entire contents of the fridge,” Jamie said, grinning. “Chad used to go through so much food.” He laughed when Chad glared, but it was clear he wasn’t really mad.
Ben blinked. “I would eat that much?”
Jamie laughed. “Well, you might leave a steak or two.” He waved a hand. “But you would need to refuel. Shifting takes a lot of energy.”
Ben nodded. “Oh. Yes, I have had that happen a few times. It’s been a while, though.”
“Right, so, a few times shouldn’t be too bad. Much more than that at once, though….” Jamie shrugged a shoulder.
“Okay.” Ben took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and imagined stepping behind his wolf, giving control over to him. By the time he landed on four paws, he knew without looking at the others that it’d taken too long.
“He’s a pretty one,” Chad said, tilting his head.
Ben growled a little, surprised when Eric growled too.
Eric grinned sheepishly. “Uh, sorry. Two naked gay men near my mate….”
It felt good to hear Eric echo his own previous thoughts.
Chad raised a hand. “Say no more.”
“He is, though,” Eric said, turning back to Ben, who growled again.
Jamie snickered. “I think he takes exception to being called ‘pretty.’”
Ben sat back, curled up, and deliberately licked his balls. Chad and Jamie started laughing like crazy. Ben sat up and looked at Eric, tilting his head.
“I have no idea,” Eric replied, correctly guessing what Ben was asking.

And when he’s still fighting with the last remnants of worry, he gets a visit of his own to help him along…

Why couldn’t he seem to get this? What was so different?
You believe there’s so much more depending on this.
Ben opened his eyes and blinked into the sunlight. The voice in his head had not been his own. As he sat up, a figure seemed to materialize across the clearing. Female, that was all he could determine at first. As she stepped forward, it seemed as if her bare feet didn’t even disturb the grass. Her long dark hair spilled over one shoulder, not quite covering the quiver on her back. Simple clothes adorned her—a tunic and plain pants that Ben thought were called leggings—and very little else except for the bow that went with the quiver.
She stopped, knelt in front of him, and ran her hand over his head. Ben closed his eyes as she petted him. Who was she? Where did she come from? She didn’t feel like other humans did, when he’d been in wolf form. She didn’t smell like them either. What was different about her?
“I know you don’t know me, but I understand your struggles, little one.”
When she cupped his face, Ben opened his eyes again. He considered shifting to talk to her, but as soon as he had the thought, he knew he wouldn’t be able to. His wolf wasn’t going to cede control in that moment. Letting that go, Ben turned his attention back to the woman and tilted his head in confusion.
“You were taught I don’t exist. I understand that. But hear me now and try to believe. His fear is not because of you. His worry is not of your making. He will figure this out soon. Just have a little more patience.”
Ben tried, maybe a little desperately, to accept her words. Is that true? Is this really not the problem?
“No, little one, it isn’t. Trust in your bond, trust that I have put you together for a reason.” She bent forward and kissed the top of Ben’s head. Ben closed his eyes as warmth and a sense of calm filled him. “Just a little longer.”
When he opened his eyes, she was gone. He sniffed, but the odd scent had disappeared as well, and there was nothing to show she’d ever been there. He lay back down, once more resting his head on his paws.
Was that who he thought it was? Had he just met their goddess? Why?
Patience, little one….

Thanks for the space today to share a bit about Ben’s struggle with being a wolf. I hope you enjoyed the tidbits I’ve shared.

Excerpt:

She smelled funny. Or rather, she didn’t smell like anything he recognized. She looked human, but she didn’t smell human, which confused him. And she walked across the forest floor in her bare feet.
He tilted his head as she approached, trying to figure out the puzzle. She wore simple dark pants, a plain tunic-like top, and had a bow slung over her shoulder with a quiver of arrows on her back. Instinct told him, however, he had nothing to fear from her.
She knelt in front of him, her long dark hair spilling over one shoulder, and reached out to brush her fingers over his head. “My poor lost wolf,” she murmured, tilting her head in a mimic of him, considering him. “I understand your pain, but you are not ready to be wolf all the time. You have more to do in your human form, and you need your pack. My wolves aren’t meant to be alone, not like this. It is time—past time—for you to return to your pack and those who love you.”
Even though the soft touch soothed him, he whined quietly, not liking the words. He’d left for a reason. There was nothing for him back there. He’d turned his back on them. They wouldn’t want him now.
“Oh, Eric, that’s not true,” she said, shaking her head.
Eric. He’d forgotten that name, perhaps deliberately, years ago. He shied away from the reminder of the human side of him, away from the echo of old pain.
“They miss you, more than you know. And there are others now. Others who will understand you in a way you weren’t understood back then.” She laid a hand on his head, and his eyes slid closed.
An image floated into his mind of a house at the edge of a stream, near a waterfall. The scent of someone very familiar joined the image, and Eric whined again. He didn’t want it, that scent, didn’t want to acknowledge he missed it. Didn’t want to think about what he’d been missing.
The image changed to an open field, a red pup leaping at him. It nipped at his ear, knocking him over. He nipped back, growling softly, as he got to his feet to retaliate.
He pushed the image away. That time was gone. He’d forgotten the path back to them, didn’t want to remember how to get there.
She spoke again, more in his head than out loud. “You remember. You’ll find it. You know where that is. Now go, my lost one. And be lost no more.”
Eric opened his eyes. She was gone. He looked around and sniffed the air, but there was no trace of her. He lay down and put his head on his paws, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
But he knew, even if he didn’t want to accept it. He knew what he needed to do. He just didn’t know if he could make himself do it.
“Go,” she whispered in his mind, and with a sigh, Eric stood and made his way hesitantly down the mountain.

White Rabbit by Grace R. Duncan - Spotlight Post on the Resist and Triumph Blog Tour

Blurb

The unthinkable has happened. Seemingly in the blink of an eye, the United States has taken a giant leap backward in equality. Women have lost their rights. The government, having undergone a coup, has taken control with an iron fist.

And LGBT people are downright illegal.
New camps have been set up to “treat” LGBT folks and many are being turned in to be sent to one, even by their own families. When one of Josh’s students approaches him to explain he’ll be leaving– running to hide– Josh can’t resist helping. He takes Andy home and, with the help of his partners Keith, Lainey, and Sara, comes up with a plan for getting Andy to safety.
Despite the high potential for disaster, they’re determined to keep Andy out of the camps. If they succeed, though, they could make a bigger difference than any of them could possibly imagine.

As 2017 opened, the United States took several steps back in the progress toward equality. In response, a group of authors has stepped up to offer positive stories of hope and love. In an effort to help fight and support those groups who are facing even greater challenges, we wrote these stories to offer a small amount of aid.
Stories of hope, resistance, and ultimately triumph fill the pages of this anthology.
All proceeds of the anthology go to The Trevor Project and GLAAD to help fight the effects of the dark times we’re facing.

Five Things I learned while writing putting together Resist and Triumph

It really is hard to write when you’re depressed. I started the Resist & Triumph anthology because I was more than a little freaked out about the results of the election in 2016 and the fears of what was to come with the new administration and congress. Terrified might be a more accurate term. I wanted nothing more than to crawl under a desk and hide, but I knew that wasn’t going to do anyone any good. However, even the determination to do something didn’t help get the words down.

Corralling authors is like herding cats. It was the first time I’d ever put together an anthology. I’ve written for quite a few by now, but never actually organized one. And good grief, it’s crazy, way harder than self-publishing a single novel or story. Simply rounding up all the authors for their stories, edits, bios… it was… a challenge. In fact, I think herding cats might be easier…

There really are spots along the Canadian border that aren’t actively watched. In researching the locations for White Rabbit, I discovered there are actually small spaces along the Montana/Canadian border with absolutely no distinguishing characteristics and no fence between the US and Canada. I know where I’m going if the US really does get much worse… In fact, there’s a story out there that a group of teenagers kept going between the US and Canada without realizing it while playing Pokémon Go.

I have a weakness for paper maps. Back before Google Maps, I used to always have a few maps in my glovebox. I was always a little afraid of getting lost and figured a cheap map of the US and the state I was living in wasn’t a bad idea. Well, when I sat down to go through the locations for White Rabbit, I kept struggling with the zooming capabilities for Google Maps. Well, I stopped by AAA and picked up a US map and, ended up with not one, but three. I might have a problem…

Despite the work and complications, I don’t regret the anthology. I don’t think I’ll ever do it again, but I find myself feeling pretty damned good about putting together the stories for charity. The sheer number of steps and piles of post-its and to-do lists I had were more than a little overwhelming, but I’m also feeling an incredible sense of accomplishment for actually succeeding.

I don’t think I’m going to be doing it again, though.

Thanks so much to Wicked Faerie's Tales and Reviews for hosting me today! I really appreciate it.

About The Author

Grace Duncan grew up with a wild imagination. She told stories from an early age—many of which got her into trouble. Eventually, she learned to channel that imagination into less troublesome areas, including fanfiction, which is what has led her to writing male/male erotica. A gypsy in her own right, Grace has lived all over the United States. She has currently set up camp in East Texas with her husband and children – both the human and furry kind. As one of those rare creatures who loves research, Grace can get lost for hours on the internet, reading up on any number of strange and different topics. She can also be found writing fanfiction, reading fantasy, crime, suspense, romance and other erotica or even dabbling in art.
