Title: Against the Grain
Series: THIRDS, Book 5
Author: Charlie Cochet
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Cover Artist: L.C. Chase
Length: Novel, 216 pages
Release Date: August 3rd, 2015

Blurb:

As the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Being in love isn’t the only danger he and Ash face as wounds reopen and new secrets emerge, forcing them to question old loyalties.

CommonExcerpt

At one point, Ash felt Cael’s leg pressed up against his, and it was ridiculous how happy the tiny gesture made him. If it was even a gesture. Ash swiftly put it off to being an accident, but then a little later, Cael reached over and wiped a thumb over the corner of Ash’s mouth, telling him he had a breadcrumb.

“You should have seen him,” Dex said with a laugh. “He looked so adorable with his cheetah fuzz shaped into spikes, from his head down to his back. Like a little spotted punk rocker.”

Maddock shook his head at Dex. “It took me two hours to wash all the hair spray off your brother’s fur.”

“We were pretending to be Guns N’ Roses,” Cael explained. “Dex was singing ‘Welcome to the Jungle,’ and I was backup sing—er, chirping.”

Ash laughed and playfully bumped Cael’s shoulder. “I’m going to have to agree with Dex. That’s adorable.” Even in his Therian form, Ash thought Cael was the sweetest thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Cael could be in his Therian form among thousands of cheetahs, and Ash would be able to point him out. His little gestures, the heart shape of his nose, or the way he chirped away, as if anyone not in their Therian form might understand him if he tried hard enough.

Dex grabbed Sloane’s arm. “Tell me you recorded that. Doesn’t matter. I have witnesses.” Dex stood and motioned to all of them. “Witnesses! You all heard it. Ash said he agrees with me.”

“Oh, good Lord. We’re never going to hear the end of this,” Maddock sighed, getting up to clear the dishes.

“Do you realize how epic this moment is?” Dex said, helping clear up.

“It’s not really that epic,” Maddock replied.

Dex let out an exaggerated gasp. “Where have you been living? Ash Keeler has agreed with something I, Dexter J. Daley, has said.”

“About your brother being adorable. Not exactly earthshattering. He’s thought that since they met.”

The table fell into silence as they all gaped at Maddock. Well, this was news to Ash. What the hell? Seeming to notice the quiet, or more likely the lack of Dex talking, Maddock looked up.

“What are you, fish? Close your mouths.”

Four mouths promptly closed.

“It’s not rocket science. I’ve known that boy since he joined, and he’s threatened every agent he’s ever met with kicking their ass. Except for Cael.”

Hard to argue with that. It was the truth.

Dex frowned at Ash. “You threatened to kick Hobbs’s ass?”

Ash nodded. “Yep.” Was it his first week of being on the job? He was pretty sure it was the first week.

“Dude, that’s not cool. Hobbs is awesome.”

“He can also be a pain in the ass. Plus when we first met, I didn’t know he had selective mutism. I asked him a question, and he wouldn’t answer me. He’d whisper to Calvin, who’d answer for him. I got pissed off and told him if he didn’t tell me himself, I’d kick his ass.” Ash had never met a tiger Therian as big and insecure as Hobbs. The whole encounter had left him confused. Here was their new demolitions expert, and he couldn’t talk. How the fuck was he going to communicate with his team? Ash wasn’t proud to admit he’d had a shit fit. He understood the THIRDS was about equality and representation when it came to hiring, but he had been genuinely concerned about the safety of his team. Not long after, Ash had seen how wrong he’d been about Hobbs. Not that he’d admitted it.

Dex let out a sound of disgust. “Dude, not cool.”

“I said I didn’t know. I apologized afterward, and that’s saying something.”

Ash got up to help clear the dishes, with Dex going on about how he should really think about using some of those scented candles Rosa had gifted him. Ash proceeded to flip him off.

When Cael stood to help, Ash put a hand to his shoulder.

“Relax, I’ve got this.”

He gave Cael a wink and walked the dirty dishes to the kitchen with Dex yammering on behind him. The guy was like a fucking mosquito buzzing in your ear and trying to suck the life out of you. Ash placed the dishes in the dishwasher, giving grunts and one-word replies. He grabbed the dishes from Dex and put those in as well. He wished he could stick Dex in there. Finally someone up there decided to give him a break, and Dex left the kitchen, singing some stupid song about a lion sleeping tonight or something.

Ash frowned at Maddock. “Does he never shut up? How the hell did you live with this for so long?”

“It’s called patience,” Maddock replied. “Not exactly your forte.”

“Oh, I can be patient. That’s not what’s required when dealing with your oldest. I’d say sedative is more the word you were looking for.”

Maddock laughed. “Just get in there, Keeler.”

5 out of 5 stars

So I'm totally going to fangirl all over Ash and Cael because this book was all I could ask for and more! Against The Grain, the fifth book in the THIRDS series still includes the rest of the team but focuses on Ash and Cael and their building relationship. And good goddess these two boys are HOT and sexy, geeky and sweet, and will break your heart all in one book, hell even in one CHAPTER.

Ash has so much to overcome from his past, and he doesn't want to hurt Cael because he means so much to him. Ash, though, isn't sure he can overcome his issues and love Cael the way he should be loved. Cael is this sweet, geeky, adorable young man, who's eager to love Ash no matter the cost to himself. We see more of Cael's past in this book and it just made me want to wrap him in my arms and hide him away from all the big bad in his life.

There are some really funny moments in Against the Grain, and there are some moments that make you want to just bawl your eyes out. But that's okay because our favorite author delivered a story that was very worthy of Ash and Cael in so many ways. Watching Ash give in to his feelings for Cael, and watching Cael having to deal with a ghost from his past really shows how much both of these characters have grown even through this book. The trademark zings between Ash and Dex are there to give lighthearted moments along with the smexy hot scenes between Ash and Cael that burn up your ereader.

And don't fear there are still a lot of moments spent with the rest of Destructive Delta throughout the book. Watching the team through Ash's viewpoint shows the rest of the team in a different light with more to their backstories. As I said above, Against The Grain did not disappoint in any way. In fact, it was even better than I had expected, and actually made me like Ash vs just tolerate him as Sloane's best friend and Cael's crush. Ash really showed his softer side in this book.

Don't let this mislead you that this is a light book, focused more on the relationship with Ash and Cael. It's not, because there is some serious ass-kicking in here by some unexpected people. The action thread in Against The Grain adds more depth to the story angle focusing on issues within the THIRDS organization. It puts the spotlight on some characters we've seen but only on scene for short bursts of time.

Something tells me we're in for a wild ride with the next books in this series after the set-up in this book. I can't wait for Calvin and Hobbs book, which is up next.

I am utterly in love with this series for just how well crafted each book, each character, and the THIRDS world itself is and how each story just pulls you deeper into the series. If you haven't tried this series yet, you're missing out and need to dive into the THIRDS world. If you have read the series to this point, you MUST read Against The Grain.

Hanna giggled and slapped his arm playfully. “You used to love it when I jumped on you. Of course, we were both naked at the time. I tried calling you, but you never answered my calls.” She pressed herself up against him and ran a finger down his arm, a pout on her face. “Where have you been? I missed you. We used to have so much fun together.”
“I’ve been a little busy.” Ash moved her hand off his arm and took a step to the side, looking incredibly uncomfortable. That made two of them. Hanna was either oblivious to Ash’s less than subtle gestures or was purposefully ignoring them. Cael took another sip of his vodka and lemonade.
“Are you busy tonight?” she purred, drawing circles on his chest with her finger.
Ash frowned at her. “Yes. I’m here with my team.”
“What’s the matter? You would have had me up against the bathroom stall by now.”
Oh come on. Really? Cael cleared his throat, and Hanna blinked at him as if noticing him for the first time, which was likely the case. Did the woman go around sexually accosting all her exes? Why would she assume Ash was willing and able?
“Well, aren’t you adorable.” She turned her attention back to Ash with a wide smile. “Who’s your little friend?”
Ash ran a hand over his hair. “Um, this is Agent Cael Maddock. He’s on my team.”
Wow. Not even friend. He’d been relegated to teammate. Cael managed to summon a smile. “Hi.” He didn’t bother extending a hand, seeing as how Hanna was back to fondling Ash, and Ash was doing absolutely fuck all about it. Despite the music thumping through the place, Cael would guess Ash could hear his teeth grinding, because he once again removed Hanna from his person.
“Look, Hanna, I’m with someone.”

Cael’s pulse picked up speed, and the butterflies in his stomach went crazy. His cheeks grew warm, and he bit his bottom lip. Was Ash actually going to say it?

Rise & Fall (THIRDS bk #4) by Charlie Cochet - Blog Tour with Review and giveaway

Rise & Fall
(THIRDS Series, Book #4)
by Charlie Cochet

Blurb:
After an attack by the Coalition leaves THIRDS Team Leader Sloane Brodie critically injured, agent Dexter J. Daley swears to make Beck Hogan pay for what he’s done. But Dex’s plans for retribution are short-lived. With Ash still on leave with his own injuries, Sloane in the hospital, and Destructive Delta in the Coalition’s crosshairs, Lieutenant Sparks isn’t taking any chances. Dex’s team is pulled from the case, with the investigation handed to Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs. Dex refuses to stand by while another team goes after Hogan, and decides to put his old HPF detective skills to work to find Hogan before Theta Destructive, no matter the cost.

With a lengthy and painful recovery ahead of him, the last thing Sloane needs is his partner out scouring the city, especially when the lies—however well intentioned—begin to spiral out of control. Sloane is all too familiar with the desire to retaliate, but some things are more important, like the man who’s pledged to stand beside him. As Dex starts down a dark path, it’s up to Sloane to show him what’s at stake, and finally put a name to what’s in his heart.

Dex sorted out all of Sloane’s pillows, fluffing them up and arranging them before bringing the tray over.
Once Sloane was settled, Dex placed the tray over his lap and kissed him, tasting a faint hint of minty freshness.

Sloane stared down at the tray.

“Is it okay?” Dex asked. Had he forgotten something? “Eggs benedict and pancakes are your favorite,
right?”

Sloane nodded.

“What’s wrong?”

“You made heart-shaped pancakes.”

Dex held back a smile. “Are they too unmanly? Should I have made them grenade-shaped? I’m sure
Letty’s got a mold for those.”

Sloane chuckled. “No, hearts are fine. It’s real sweet. Thank you.”

Dex sat down on the edge of the bed beside him. He ran his fingers through Sloane’s hair feeling guilty
for having left him on his own last night. Sloane could take care of himself, even if he was injured, but

his partner was drugged up and obviously feeling a little out of it, considering his reaction to the heart
shaped pancakes. Maybe it was time he took care of his partner like he’d promised he would.

“Why don’t you eat your breakfast while I shower, and we’ll watch a movie or something together?”

Sloane gave him a wide smile. “I’d like that.”

Dex left Sloane to his breakfast and went off to shower as quickly as he could. Showering wasn’t as
much fun without his partner. As he lathered himself up, a naughty thought occurred to him. He’d also
promised he’d make his partner purr. Finishing up, he could barely hold back his smile or the heat
spreading through him. Easy there, Daley. Don’t get yourself worked up yet. He dressed in his comfy
cotton pajama bottoms and a loose faded Back to the Future T-shirt before heading out into the
bedroom. Sloane was smiling, his plate devoid of any evidence food had ever been on there. Wow, his
partner had been hungry. Really hungry. Starving. Sort of like after….

“Please tell me you didn’t.” Dex removed the tray and put it on the floor against the wall. He pulled the
blanket back and tried to lift Sloane’s T-shirt, but his partner slapped his hand away. “Sloane, let me see,
damn it.” He grabbed Sloane’s wrist with one hand and managed to pull up the cotton shirt, cursing
under his breath at the tiny beads of blood seeping through the bandage. “For fuck’s sake, did you try to
shift?” When Sloane looked away, Dex had his answer. No wonder his partner was out of it. It wasn’t
just the meds. Sloane hadn’t recuperated from postshift. Dex opened the minifridge and found it empty.
“When?” He slammed the fridge door shut.

“Last night. After you called,” Sloane mumbled.

“Last night?” Dex put a hand to his head. Veggies and hummus were all well and good for Sloane’s
Human side, but not for the Felid inside him. He needed meat, protein, and more than the packet of
sliced chicken Dex had left him in the fridge. “Fuck. Sloane, you know you’re not supposed to attempt
shifting. The doctor said so, and it’s in the packet. To make matters worse, you do it when there’s no
one here to perform postshift trauma care? With no access to the right foods? What were you
thinking?”

“I’m thinking I need to fucking heal, and if that’s the quickest way to do it, then it’s a risk I’m willing to
take!”

Sloane’s ferocity surprised Dex, and he took a step back. His partner’s pupils were dilated and his fangs
slightly elongated. Fuck, what the hell was going on? It was like Sloane was having trouble controlling his
feral side. Dex could see it. He could see the Felid inside Sloane staring back at him from behind glowing
amber eyes. Could the meds be doing this? The recovery packet the doctor had given them specifically
instructed Sloane not shift while he was healing, especially while on his meds.

“Okay, take it easy. It’s me.” Dex held his hands up in front of him and swallowed hard, aware of the
telltale signs. “There’s no hurry for you to heal, Sloane. It’s okay.”

“It’s not okay,” Sloane snarled, his fingers flexing against the sheets and his nails starting to grow. Fuck.
Oh fuck.

“Sloane, you need to breathe. Calm down.” Dex slowly edged away from the bed. Why was this
happening? Sloane had never lost his grip on his Felid side. Not to mention he’d yet to fully recover from

his first attempt. “Please, Sloane. Your body’s not healed from the first try. Who knows what asecond
attempt will do?”

There was no reply from Sloane. He was gritting his teeth, his face red, and his muscles straining.

“Sloane, you need to stop.”

“I can’t.” Sloane lowered his head, his fierce gaze on Dex.

“Why?”

“To protect you!”

Dex gasped as Sloane let out a roar, his body starting to shift. What the hell was Dex supposed to do?
He’d never faced a Therian who’d lost control of his Human side, much less an Apex predator. Quickly,
he backed up against the far wall, cringing as Sloane’s cries of agony filled the room. Sloane tore at his
clothes, pulling his T-shirt and pajama bottoms off before his mass shifted, bones popped, and fur
pierced his skin. Dex reached into his pocket and with shaky hands placed a call.

A gruff voice answered. “What do you want?”

“Ash, you have to help me.” The panic in his voice must have been clear, because Ash’s tone instantly
transformed from its usual gruffness to concern.

“What’s going on, Dex? Talk to me.”

“It’s Sloane. He’s shifting, but it’s not… not normal. He tried last night but couldn’t complete the transformation. Then we got into an argument, and it’s like he’s lost it. I don’t think he’s in control. How
is that possible?”

“Hide.”

“What?”

“Hide somewhere he can’t get to you. I’m on my way. I’ve still got my key to your place.”

Ash hung up, and Dex shoved his phone in his pocket. Where the fuck was he supposed to hide? When
he moved his gaze to the bed, he stilled. There was no time for hiding. The huge black jaguar lay in the
center of the bed, his tail thumping against the headboard. He sniffed the sheets, then the air before his

gaze landed on Dex.

5 out of 5 stars

Have you delved into the world of the THIRDS yet? You’re missing out if you haven’t because this is one of the hottest m/m paranormal series out right now.  For those of you that haven’t read them, this is the fourth book in the series and they are best read in order.

The previous book Rack & Ruin left everyone hanging on a pretty maj0r cliffhanger. Rise & Fall picks up moments after the events in Rack & Ruin and literally takes you on a wild and crazy ride. In Rise & Fall you’re shown different sides to the already well established characters in the series. The main couple, Dex and Sloane, is dealing with Sloane’s injuries and eventual healing, and Dex’s need to fix and protect everything. After Sloane, the man he loves, is almost killed it sends Dex down a dark path filled with the need to avenge and protect his family and team. This is a very different Dex than we’ve seen in the previous books, as he is normally the 80’s music loving, adorkably sweet and silly one on the team.

There’s still Ash and Cael, and Calvin and Hobbs, along with their other teammates Rosa and Letty. While they’re not established couples, yet, they are part of the THIRDS team with Dex and Sloane. When they’re all placed on leave due to Sloane’s injuries, it makes them focus on each other instead of their cases. We have a surprising scene with Hobbs comforting Dex that was perfect in its simplicity. Then there’s a moment when Calvin and Hobbs actually have to focus on each other. Unfortunately it’s hard to share a lot of the standout moments because they’ll give the story away to those that haven’t read Rise & Fall yet.  Let’s just say that this is definitely the book I’d consider the turning point in the series.

I promised myself to not be a raving fangirl while sharing my love for this series. It’s hard not to because the entire concept of this series has been well conceived and so very well written by the author. Charlie Cochet has been able to give life to not just one couple, but six complete couples in various stages of relationships. She’s made you want to know more about them or cheer them on or want to slap them depending on their actions.  That’s a lot of care and detail packed into one book and you enjoy the ride she takes you on.  This is one of those series that you need to give a try because all the elements combine into what may very well be your next favorite book.

Rack & Ruin by Charlie Cochet - Blog Tour with Review and Giveaway

CCRRBlogTourBannerLG

Hi! I’m Agent Cael Maddock. I hope you’re enjoying your tour of the place with my teammates. Why don’t you have a seat? Yep, I share this office with Rosa. What’s it like having her for a partner? It’s awesome! She totally kicks ass, and her cooking is the best! Not even Sloane can resist. She makes these amazing empanadas. Oh my god. They’re his favorite, so it’s the only thing we can eat that doesn’t result in an excruciating training session afterward to work it off. Seriously, he’s a bit of a health nut which I find funny considering he’s partnered with a guy who lives off caffeine and sugar. I’m pretty sure Sloane has nightmares about Dex’s fridge.

Cael MaddockWhat’s behind the metal doors? That’s my equipment locker and substation. That’s why it stretches across the room. Here, I’ll show you. Just don’t touch anything. It’s a thing of beauty, isn’t it? I’ve been building this baby up since I joined. Am I allowed to do this? You need high level clearance to construct your own security console or put together your own equipment, which I have thanks to saving the THIRDS servers from meltdown three summers ago.

I can access any THIRDS network from here. I call him Hal 9000. Hal for short. Yes, I realize Hal tried to kill everyone. Thanks. It’s still an awesome movie. Moving on. From here I can even connect with the Chief of Therian Defense. Doesn’t mean I would. Any activity connected to the network leaves a trail of metadata behind, even the vending machines. With the swipe of this screen here, I can check what you ordered for lunch from the THIRDS canteen. It is scary. Dex isn’t happy the THIRDS monitors his snack intake. Though I’m pretty sure that has more to do with the fact Sloane will find out and put him on a diet or something.

What are you doing? Don’t touch that! Oh crap! I told you not to touch that. It’s an emergency signal. Um, well, because it’s sort of private. Oh god, he’s coming. Just be quiet. Don’t say a word.

Hi, Ash. It’s fine. I’m okay. Calm down. False alarm. What happened? Um, I hit the button by accident. I’m fine. I promise. Am I coming down with something? No. Why? My face is red? Uh, it’s nothing. Hot. I mean me, not you. Not that you’re not—Or that I am, or that I'm thinking about you being hot, I mean, uh, oh God. I mean temperature-wise it’s hot in here. Pissbunnies. I’m fine. I don’t know why they’re laughing. I hate you so bad right now. NO! Not you, Ash! You know what? They’re all yours. We’ll see who's laughing by the end of the tour. >:)

5 out of 5 stars

So I'll start this out with.. This is the third book in the THIRDS series and they really do have to be read in order.

Now onto the fun part... And excuse me if I become a raving fangirl but I absolutely love this series and it's author. She's a wickedly talented writer, who in a very short time has created a wickedly addictive series.

This book was AMAZING in so many ways. The little intricacies that Charlie weaved into the storyline, that I didn't catch until my second read-through. Yes, I've already read Rack & Ruin twice. There was a tremendous amount of story packed into this book. So it's really one to pay attention to, as your reading along.

The first book in the series sucked you in with the development of the characters and the action. The second book, kept the story moving forward and added in more backstory and developed stronger emotional ties between the whole team, and with Dex and Sloane. Rack & Ruin has the action still, but this book for me was about the intimacies of the emotions between Dex and Sloane, and also the ties among Destructive Delta.

All the more relationship based scenes between Dex and Sloane are what stand out for me most. Through out the story there are these small intimate moments. Like Dex found a small jaguar stuffed toy with bandages on it's paws. While he's sitting on the side of the bed, tears rolling down his cheeks, Sloane walks in and the first thing he does is tenderly wipe the tears away with his thumb. The conversations that they had about Sloane's past, Sloane asking Dex to stay with him when he calls the doctor from the Center, and so many other moments. I can't say enough about how much these vignettes impacted me throughout the story.

I will totally admit that I've been a hardcore Dex fangirl since the first book. Now though, Rack & Ruin, firmly placed Dex and Sloane into my top 5 favorite m/m couples and my top 10 favorite overall characters. In this story we see more of the solid, strong Dex over the sweet and silly Dex. We also see Sloane, showing more of the boyfriend type traits. Which is a pretty adorable thing to see from him. Oh, and just in case if you were curious, there are still seriously flaming HOT sexy times with Dex and Sloane woven into the story. First one that will make you laugh is at Ash's apartment, in HIS bathroom.

We do see the other characters in the book, including more of Bradley, Lou, Sebastian Hobbs, and two other team leaders, Levi and Taylor. The other big 'relationship' storyline that's picking up steam is Cael and Ash. Unfortunately it's not in a good way. We learn quite a bit about Ash's backstory and it's enough to break your heart. Then we see the interaction with Ash and Cael and you'll either want to rip dangly bits off Ash or cuddle him for his behavior, especially after his backstory is revealed. I still wanted to rip dangly bits off though, even after that part. What can I say, Cael is adorable and I love him almost as much as I love Dex.

This was a very, very solid entry into the THIRDS world even if it was more focused on the relationships then the action. With a paranormal/urban fantasy type series it's very important to focus on character development and this book nailed it for me. Charlie Cochet has built a well-crafted world, and created characters that many people have fallen head over heels in love with them. She's quickly moved from a 'new' author for me to a I MUST OWN ALL her books author.

I look forward to book four, Rise & Fall, coming in February 2015. Also to more of THIRDS Thursday with all the awesome story vignettes. If you haven't read this series, I highly encourage you to pick it up. You will love it!
