Blurb:

Dwyn is a young man in the small, isolated town of Manicouga, son of the Minstor, who is betrothed to marry Kessa in a few weeks’ time.

Mael is shepherding the remains of his own village from the north, chased out by a terrible storm that destroyed Land’s End.

Both are trying to find their way in a post-apocalyptic world. When the two meet, their love and attraction may change the course of history.

—————

The Great North was inspired by St. Dwynwen's Day, also known as Welsh Valentines Day:

Excerpt:

"We celebrate Dwyn's Day as a testament to true love and sacrifice. It's a remembrance of the way things were and the way they've come to be. In the end, let it be a reminder that every one of us has the power to change the course of events through love."
—Dillon Cooper, New Gods and Monsters, Twenty years After Dwyn

The gray clouds scudded by overhead, blowing in quickly from the east.
Dwyn shivered and pulled on his woolen cap. It was cold out, unusual for so early in the fall. The rains had been heavy this season, the wettest in a generation, and Circle Lake was close to overflowing its banks. If he stretched to look over the rows of corn plants, he could see the waters lapping at the shore far below, as if hungry to consume his village of Manicouga.
His father had consulted the elders, some of whom had seen more than fifty summers, and everyone agreed things were changing. Whether that augured good or ill was anyone's guess.
He shrugged and moved along the row of plants, breaking off ears of corn and throwing them into the jute sack that hung from his shoulder.
Ahead of him, two of his age-mates, Declan and Baia, were working their way down the next two rows.
Dwyn frowned. He got distracted easily, and he'd let the two of them get a jump on him. That wouldn't do.
He redoubled his pace. He moved with focus and purpose, and soon he was closing the gap with his friends.
"Someone's being chased by a lion," Baia said with a laugh.
"Or a tiger." Declan grinned, his nice smile only missing one tooth, lost to a fight with one of the Beckham brothers the year before.
Dwyn grinned. "Or a bear?" Dwyn only knew lions and tigers from the fairy tale his mother used to tell them, "The Girl and the Aus." He had no idea what an Aus was, either.
Bears he knew. The hunters occasionally brought one home, and old Alesser had a five-line scar across his wrinkled face that he claimed came from one of the beasts.
A shout went up from ahead of them. Dwyn craned his neck to see what the ruckus was, but he couldn't make out anything. "What's going on?"
Declan, who was half a head taller, looked toward the commotion. "Hard to tell. Something down by the road."
Dwyn laid down his sack carefully and ran up the hill to one of the old elms that dotted the field. He climbed into the tree, scurrying up through the leaves and branches until he had a clear view of the Old Road. It ran from up north to somewhere down south, maybe near the ruins of old Quebec if the merchant tales held any truth. Hardly anyone from Manicouga ever followed it, but occasionally traders would follow it to town, bringing exotic wares and news from the other villages that were scattered up and down its length.
They swore it went all the way down to the Heat, the great desert that had consumed much of the world after the Reckoning.
"What's going on down there?" Baia called from below.
Dwyn tried to make sense of it. "There are three wagons coming down the pass. They're loaded up with all sorts of things. They don't look like traders though."
The first of the horse-drawn wagons had just reached the field above the main township. It stopped, and someone hopped off to talk with the villagers who had gathered from the fields.
"We need to get down there," Dwyn said, scrambling down the tree trunk. "Something's happening." Nothing new ever happened in Manicouga, and he wasn't going to miss it.
He grabbed his sack and sprinted toward the Old Road, not waiting to see if Declan and Baia followed.

4.5 out of 5 stars

The Great North is a new standalone post-apocalyptic story kicking off Mischief Corner Books' new A Legendary Love line of stories.

As the blurb for the story really gives you the background I won't delve into retelling it. I'll just dive into my review.

So again our author, J. Scott Coatsworth, takes us on a completely new world building journey. Which is one of my absolute favorite traits for this author. He really, really knows how to world build the old-school way that I grew up reading. Everything is laid out for you but leaving some room for individual interpretation or in this case your imagination of what a post-apocalyptic/dystopian society might appear.

We have two very separate communities being represented by Dwyn's people, the Manicougans, and Mael's people, from Land's End. They are two total extremes in that the Manicougans are devout to their religion and what their religion has taught them to be right and wrong. The Land's End people don't follow those precepts, they are a polyamorous society but not in the way of what our concept of polyamory is. They have a mate of their heart, and they also have their mate to provide children. They are not truly bisexual, at least from what I interpreted in the story, as their heart mate is of the same sex and their birth mate is female but may not be who they are in love with. While it does play against our traditional concepts of polyamory and bisexuality, this is a <i><b>Dystopian</b></i> society...and our concepts should not be applied to their society.

I was struck by how Dwyn's community felt against 'holers' (their term for someone who is gay) and how almost Puritanical and borderline fanatical they were about their religion. Whereas the Land's End community felt more communal, slightly hippie-esque in their way of thinking. They may not be exactly "Free Love" but they understood the need to continue their  society by procreating and conceptualized a way that worked for them. I do wish we'd have seen more of their society prior to it's decimation. I think it would have added just a little more depth to their way of life and their beliefs.

This novella packs a lot of depth into it's pages and you don't really realize how much until you've finished reading it and think about it a little bit. I hope to see more from this world by the author even though the series itself will be various authors and various legends/myth retellings.

I highly recommend The Great North both for the author's writing and storytelling skills as well as the story itself. Check this one out now!

The Tenth Muse by Belinda McBride - Blog Tour with Review and Giveaway

The Tenth Muse
(Aphrodite Project #1)
by Belinda McBride

Blurb:

In a wicked game, the God of Love falls to his own arrow, and a gentle scholar learns how dangerous knowledge can be.

Aphrodite has had it.

It was bad enough that her son Eros walked a fashion show in drag, but did he really have to show the entire world his wings? Desperate to rein in the impulsive young god, she recruits the scholarly muse Rees to lure him back to Olympus until the scandal dies down.

After hundreds of years, Eros has finally located the reincarnation of his former love, Psyche. The only way to her heart is through fame, so the God of Love plans a daring campaign to win her back. Yet the closer he gets to Psyche, the more he’s drawn to a geeky young professor who came crashing into his life.

Eros drags Rees into his wicked world of high fashion and risqué parties, only to expose him to danger from an unexpected source. When Rees’ secrets come out, they threaten to destroy Eros’ love for him. Yet when Rees is kidnapped, Eros is forced to turn to the woman who set this catastrophe in motion—his mother, Aphrodite.

Reader Advisory: This book contains some scenes of kidnapping/captivity and graphic scenes of death and violence. This book also contains references to/discussions of rape.

“What else do you know about Eros? Not me, but the god.” He was intrigued. Granted, Rees seemed to know a great deal about…well…everything. But it was just weird to hear him talking about the historical version of Eros.

“He loved long and true. Odd, that the god you say symbolizes lust is one of the few who had only one consort and one child.”

He pressed his eyes closed at the mention of his daughter, Bliss. She’d been his blood, half-divine, but like her mother, she’d finally succumbed to mortality. And like her mother, she’d chosen forgetfulness and rebirth. She’d been a mere heartbeat in his long existence. The memory of her made his heart ache. Sometimes he spotted a man or woman on the street, his gaze drawn by golden hair and blue, blue eyes. His grandchildren, hundreds of generations removed. It was another thought he avoided.

“It’s all fairy tales and fantasy, Rees.”

“Yes, of course. But people created these mythological beings out of a need for explanation. For comfort. They needed reassurance that there was more to the world than hard work and eventual death.”

He waded out farther, still facing Eros. His hands drifted in the clear water. “And think of it, Eros. Most of the Greek pantheon were rather fearsome characters, representing that which they feared and what they desperately needed. Apollo promised that when we woke in the morning, the sun would rise. Poseidon controlled the seas—when fishermen didn’t come back, it was the god’s will. And the fertility deities, Aphrodite, Hermes, Demeter…so very many gods and goddesses to pray to for successful crops and children. Then there was Eros. He was all about love. Not the weather or the crops or pregnancy, but quite simply…love. That was an amazing step forward in social development.”

Eros waded out into the water, enjoying the sensation of the sand slipping under his feet. He smelled salt on the air and thought of his mother. “He sounds a bit unnecessary to me.”

Rees turned and smiled at him. “He sounds like the creation of an evolving society.”

For a moment, Eros was afraid Rees would see his erection and be spooked, but even as the thought crossed his mind, warm water slipped up over his hips, hiding his groin. He tried to see if Rees was aroused, but the ebb and flow of the water revealed nothing.

Without much thought, Eros gave himself to the ocean, gliding under the surface, smiling a brief greeting to the tiny fish darting past.

Nearby, Rees was cutting through the water as though he’d been born to it, gliding down into the depths then rising, breaking the surface in a smooth, tireless stroke. The water was shallow. Eros skimmed along the bottom and kicked upward, rolling onto his back to watch the stars.

The version of Eros that Rees had described seemed like a stranger. How long since he’d really cared about others? He’d certainly known about Justin and Alejandro, but hadn’t been concerned enough to intervene. He’d worried over Rosalinda, and had almost talked himself out of the idea that she’d once been the love of his life. Because how could she be Psyche when he felt little for her beyond lust and a warmth that warred with his annoyance at her selfish behavior?

Beside him Rees drifted, completely comfortable in the water. Like Eros, he watched the sky, smiling at the path of a falling star.

 “Did you make a wish?”

Eros blinked, surprised at how much the saltwater stung his eyes. “Yeah. I made a wish.”

He wished the hollow spot in the middle of his chest would go away. He wished that the two young men back at the hotel would gather up their courage and grab their happiness. He wished like hell that Rees would touch him, just brush a hand against his cheek. Nothing happened, and his buzz faded away. When he looked up, they’d drifted far down the beach.

The lights of the hotel were distant. He wanted nothing more than to keep drifting, away from his past and his present. Away from the heartache of Rosa.

His eyes were burning again.

A strong hand settled on his arm and the gentle surf tugged them back to shore. He landed on the sand with his head pillowed on Rees’ chest, his ass coming to rest on boney knees. Rees wrapped his arms tightly around Eros’ shoulders. He held on as the waves tugged at them, pushing, pulling and bathing them in warmth and the tingle of sea foam. It felt odd to have someone else holding him. And when a strong, graceful hand settled over his heart, Eros could no longer blame the ocean for the sting in his eyes and the salt on his cheeks. He turned his face into Rees’ chest and he cried.

4.5 out of 5 stars
The Tenth Muse is the first book in Belinda McBride's new Aphrodite Project.

I must say that this book stole right into my top 20 of 2016. I truly did not expect that when I read the blurb, more because I'm not huge into the fashion world. However my inner Greek Mythology nerd grrrl was seriously happy with the characters and settings along with the backstories and secondary characters.

Speaking of characters I utterly adored Rees and wanted to wrap Eros in his own wings and hug him for days. While the romance for these two characters started out as a charade while Rees watched over Eros so he'd 'behave' watching Rees fall for Eros was sweet..and sexy as hell. Especially with Eros having met his 'soul-mate' as her reincarnated self but knowing that he's not what she needs any longer. Eros is strong to step back and let her spread her own proverbial wings and find the love that is calling to her in this lifetime. He's less inclined to allow himself to fall for Rees, especially since he doesn't know who Rees really is.

The Tenth Muse had some very well planned and well executed twists and turns within the story. It also had a few typical tropes but they were well placed and written as an enhancement to the story instead of just added in because it would move the story forward. While I'd love to share more about the plot there is quite a large part of it that would be a major spoiler. So I let you read for yourself this amazingly well crafted story and get the full effect of the plot twists and turns.

I highly recommend this for anyone that loves their ancient greek and roman mythology. Also any one that loves a little paranormal in their romance, this book would be spot on for you. The characters and the storyline of The Tenth Muse will keep you hooked from page one all the way to the end. I look forward to the next book in the series and seriously hope that it's Eros's brother as one of the main characters.

EXCERPT — Love’s Code

“How are you finding it now we’ve reached the halfway point?”

The question, directed at the back of his head as he filed into place in the café queue, caused Andre to start and spin around, thumping his questioner’s arm in the process.

“Sorry, I....” Andre’s voice trailed off when he found himself staring into Eren Aksoy’s dark eyes.

“Oh, it’s okay, you can talk to me,” Eren said, clearly misunderstanding Andre’s hesitation. “There’s no rule says we can’t discuss the test in our breaks. It’s just no one tends to do so. Competitive natures and all that.”

“Uh.”

Andre didn’t think he’d ever heard Eren speak before, at least not more than a word or two. Since work in their department was mostly solitary, there was little discussion around the office and they never spent their breaks together. He could sometimes go the whole day without exchanging a word with anyone unless he needed to run something by Gavin.

Eren’s voice was mellow and smooth. A natural baritone, with the merest hint of an accent to betray his foreign roots. When Andre’s gaze was drawn to his mouth, Eren’s lips twitched into the shadow of a smile. Beautiful, full lips. Lips Andre wished he could sample, imagining Eren would taste of chocolate and Eastern spices.

“I suppose the SQL posed no difficulty for you. Mine’s a little unpractised and took longer than the others to complete. I’m into the fifth task now.”

“Me too.” Andre’s brain finally caught up with the conversation and he half-turned back toward the counter. Staring at Eren was a can of worms he didn’t wish to open lest his body betray him. This way he was not ignoring Eren, but he could divide his attention to keep his unruly mind occupied.

“Think you’ll make it through?” Andre could have sworn Eren shuffled closer as he asked the question, but no doubt that was merely the product of his overactive imagination.

Andre shrugged. “Depends what the final tasks are like, I guess.”

“My bet? These seven tasks aren’t important. Whatever that final surprise turns out to be will pose the main challenge.”

“Uh, you do know this is a competition, right? Sharing insights with me isn’t exactly advisable. Shouldn’t it be ‘every man for himself’?”

Eren laughed. The happy, bright sound drew the attention of half the café and made Andre twist farther away as his cock gave a jerk of appreciation. “There are ten places, Andre. It’s perfectly acceptable for both of us to succeed.”
