Chapter Two – Nymph Dreams

Suddenly, Amellea was all alone in a dream…or she was hallucinating again, she guessed. No one was with her in the forest. The night was bright below a starlit sky. The cool, crisp air was filled with a heady, hypnotic smell from flowers she could not identify.
Startled, Amellea saw three lights she thought must be fireflies zoom past her. The lights glowed and circled around her until they appeared to be a single, large, glowing light. Were those wings she saw? No, it can’t be. She’d heard legends about fairies, but she had never seen one.
“Legends, humph!” Then, right out of thin air, materialized three beautiful creatures who were no doubt Fairies, glowing as though a light followed them while casting glitter about with each step they took. Amellea was face-to-face with real Fairies—three, to be precise! “Amazing…”
“Hootie-whooo, look at you! Sisters, I think she is a beauty, even to rival our Ewa. Well, do you have anything to say for yourself?” The surly Nymph pranced around Amellea, inspecting her. Amellea just watched, completely dumbfounded, as the glowing Fairy addressed her.
“Lylahbelle, honestly! Do not taunt the fair maiden. Can’t you see she has been hurt? She’s had a terrible shock!” Annabelle, the dark-haired Nymph and clearly the oldest of the three sisters, chided.
“Merabelle is not jealous. No, you would not even look at a Halfling sideways, even if he is Chief Hunter and leader of the RealmWalkers.
Are you Annabelle? This one certainly does enjoy the comforts of Maleek’s strong arms. He seems to enjoy looking at her, too. Her hair is the color of sunset and soft as corn silk.”
Lylahbelle continued her inspection of Amellea, touching her hair. “But…it is very tangled.”
Merabelle sensed explosive energy radiating off Amellea. The two Nymphs looked at each other, and with a nod, they grabbed Amellea’s arms, preventing her swing from contacting with Lylahbelle’s face.
Amellea struggled and could not free her arms from the delicate but very strong Nymphs. Electric sparks snapped and crackled around them.
“Why did you try to hurt me…you, you, you dirty Earthling?” Lylahbelle thought.  You will pay dearly for this indiscretion; if not today, very soon.
“Uh-oh…we are being summoned.” Annabelle and Merabelle released her arms and stepped closer to Lylahbelle.
“I don’t think I like Fairies at all; you are rude!” Amellea stomped her foot. Annabelle and Merabelle looked at each other, moving between the adversaries and stepping closer to Lylahbelle.
“Uh-oh, this can’t be good!” Merabelle exclaimed, reaching for her sister. She could see the volcanic tongue-lashing Lylah had planned to explode on Amellea.
“We. Are. Not. Peedie. Folk. Thank. You. Very. Much!” Lylahbelle screamed. “Nymphs are who we are. I could sing you straight to your death! You silly Earthlings know nothing of the power we wield.”
Amellea straightened her shoulders, rising to her full height, albeit shorter than the Nymph. “No. I just decided. I don’t like ‘Nymphs,’ if they are as rude as you are, Lylahbelle! Now you three get out of my ‘dream’ or ‘head’ before I punch ‘you,’ Lylah, in the face. You just go wherever you came from before I use some of this electricity pouring out of my hands and zap you with it!”
Amellea wiggled her fingers, reaching out toward the Nymph as sparks crackled from the tips. “I hope I have this Magik gift when I am awake. It might come in handy.”
“The Earthlings do not know much about Magik folk. I am sure she meant no harm, Lylah. Do not continue to provoke her now, because we have work to do. The Watcher calls, sisters. We must not delay,” Annabelle spoke with authority and smiled kindly at Amellea.
“We three will receive Ewa’s ire when she finds out we visited the Earthling’s dreams. She warned us to be on our best behavior, sisters.” Annabelle reached for her sisters’ hands, moving a safe distance away from Amellea. The Nymphs rotated in a circle as the clock hands moved once, then rotated in the opposite direction twice, repeating the motion faster and faster. With each rotation, the three became smaller and smaller until they were just tiny glowing dots. Fireflies, just like the first time Amellea saw the Nymphs.
“Quick! Hit her with the dust so she will go back to sleep, thinking this was all a bad dream. Don’t use too little dust or she will remember us when she wakes!” cautioned Annabelle, but Lylahbelle smirked and shook her wings vigorously as the three retreated to see the Watcher.
“I know just what to dust her with, sisters! I have the perfect remedy!”
Lylahbelle had no qualms about using the strongest sleep remedy she knew to take care of Amellea. She could be the next Sleeping Beauty. Her sisters could not blame her for taking care of an Earthling slandering her race and attempting to harm her. No matter if she deserved it. Ewallea would never know, unless her palsy-walsy sister, Merabelle, spilled the beans.
“My goose is cooked. Merabelle will spill. I better lay low for a while until this all blows over.” Lylah had a plan.

When Miss Faversham left, they had a few minutes to laugh about Addleberry forest and some of the more obvious rules. No one could understand why anyone would approach a werewolf in full transformation. Even Lane knew it was tantamount to suicide.

Payson smiled when he saw Lane offering to carry Felicity’s bags to her dormitory room. All their luggage had been taken to their dormitories already. But it seemed Lane had forgotten, because he was smitten with Felicity, or he was smitten and wanted any excuse to spend a little more time with her. Either way, he approved.

It was nice to see everyone getting along, and the faint blush that came to Felicity’s cheeks. She looked like a girl who had never been appreciated before. After her story of how she’d been bullied, Payson hoped that he and Lane could befriend her and show her that not everyone was a jerk.

He was only marginally surprised when he noticed Riley lingering. He stretched and stared enigmatically. Payson almost wondered if he had drifted off into one of his premonitions, until Estelle said goodnight and Riley returned the sentiment.

Payson decided to stay back to see what was going on, nodding to the twins as they passed, chatting amongst themselves. Then he noticed that Diantha was standing right in front of him, waiting for his attention. When had his instincts been so low as to not notice that sort of approach?

Before he could answer his own question, he caught Riley’s movement out the corner of his eye, perching on the arm of a sofa as if waiting for him. Then he realised he was almost fixating on Riley. It didn’t make any sense.

Seeing the future was incredible, but with a bit of a violent streak in his own nature, Payson loved the ability Riley had of using just his voice as a weapon. It was something he envied. All he had were fangs. Nothing new or interesting there.

But admiration for his gift couldn’t be the only thing drawing him to the boy, could it?

“Well, we’re here. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. Do you fancy going for a walk with me and exploring a little?” Diantha wondered.

“That sounds good,” he lied, sensing an ulterior motive. He was far too busy trying to figure out Riley, so he said whatever he had to say to get rid of her.

To his relief, Diantha smiled and said goodnight before heading off down the corridor that led to the dormitories.

Now that he was completely alone with Riley, Payson could feel his heart racing and his fangs desperate to make an appearance. He was suddenly starving; like he had never fed before.

“Thanks for earlier. For taking the heat off me,” he said to the banshee. He couldn’t think properly, but it seemed the right thing to say, and Riley smiled, which sent his stomach into somersaults.

“I know what it’s like to be different.” Riley shrugged it off, while admitting to a truth that neither of them wanted to face.

The mix of sensations running through Payson died on impact with those words. Suddenly, his life seemed a whole lot more complicated than it had ever been before. “Yeah, but we’re all different. I hardly thought not dating my best friend would be an issue. And now they all know I’m gay, which I wasn’t planning to broadcast,” he admitted with a sigh of disapproval.

It was difficult enough being gay at all, at an age when it seemed like the entire high school was dating. Acceptance was more widespread, but there were still the usual bigots and homophobic jibes to face at school. It was the whole reason he hadn’t come out yet and let it be known that his ‘dating’ life was private. That and his ‘tough guy’ manner, thanks to his secret vampire nature, kept them quiet. But now he’d just outed himself and didn’t know why.

“You would think that, considering I’m a vampire, you’re a banshee, and they’re wizards, it wouldn’t make an ounce of difference who I dated or when.” He sighed, disapproving of the way the world worked.

Why was it so hard, and why did no one understand? The heart chose who the heart chose, timing be damned. No one could choose who they loved.

He had tried once to convince himself to love a girl—another vampire; even Diantha—but it was no use. He had always known the truth, and denying it just to be what everyone else thought was normal was stupid. He just hadn’t ever been that interested in anyone. At least, not before Riley. And it had physically hurt him trying to convince himself otherwise. He would never do that again.

“But it does,” Riley disagreed, much to his surprise. “Being a different magical creature is one thing; it’s something we all share with each other, against the world. But being sixteen and not dating? Even worse, being sixteen and wanting to date other boys? It’s like a crime to the twins.” He shrugged. “I don’t know why they make such a big deal of it, since they’re not dating either and neither of them have to broadcast their interest. But for you and me, it’s different … dating is dangerous to us. Even in our world.”

He rose from his perch on the sofa arm and stretched again.

Payson was shocked to sense a bone-weary exhaustion in him. That shouldn’t happen; they hadn’t exchanged blood, so why could he sense Riley’s emotions?

“Yeah, well, the first one who comments on it is going to get decked,” Payson said, trying to distract himself.

He didn’t care what anyone thought about him, but if they started having a go, just because he was friends with a girl he didn’t fancy or because he was gay, he would do some damage.

1.5 The Lost and Lonely

One orphan boy. One new family. One big secret.

Phil always thought his life was going to be chaotic. Orphaned as a child and having grown up in foster care, his boyfriend Logan is the only shining light in his world, along with Phil’s two foster sisters, Ella and Estelle. But when Estelle goes off to a fancy new boarding school, suddenly everything changes. His life won’t always be dark and lonely, but it will no longer be simple, either. When the Sutherland’s enter his life, Phil has to question what secrets he’s willing to keep and where the word ‘magical’ fits into his normal, human life.

Excerpt

Phil nearly choked on the drag from his cigarette when his phone rang, flashing the Martins’ name on the screen.

Logan turned from where he was choosing a movie with a look of concern.

No one ever called him; the only reason he had the phone was so that he could contact Logan and Estelle, now that she was away at boarding school.

Phil took a deep breath and placed his cigarette on the ashtray on the coffee table. They were downstairs, since Logan’s parents were away on a weekend sailing trip. They wouldn’t be back for two days, so he could leave the confines of Logan’s bedroom and wander the house freely.

He lifted his mobile carefully. It was the only luxury he’d been allowed, so that his foster parents could get in touch with him if he was supposed to return home for a surprise inspection. Even then, they would send a brief, demanding text. Never a phone call. Yelling at him was fine, apparently, but God forbid his foster folks actually had to talk to him.

“Hello?” he answered, nervous about what was going to happen.

“Phil, get home now. The social worker’s coming by in two hours. You have ten minutes to get on the bus. Text us when you do, so we know when to expect you,” his foster father explained before hanging up.

It gave him no time to argue.

Phil looked up at Logan, disappointed and upset that their time together was being cut short. “I’m sorry. I have to go,” he apologised, explaining the phone call as he got to his feet and approached his boyfriend on the other side of the room.

Logan sighed and turned away, looking as disappointed as he felt.

Phil cupped his face in his hands, not sure there was anything he could say to make it better. “I’ll call as soon as they’ve left. I might be able to get back here tonight,” he said, giving him what little hope he could.

Logan looked doubtful, but nodded. “I’ll be sitting here, staring at my phone.”

Phil believed him. He ducked in for a quick kiss, before backing away again. “I better go.”

Ten minutes after a difficult goodbye, he sat on the bus, texting his foster parents that he was on his way back. Not home. No. That was Logan. Logan was his home, and he was leaving him behind to go somewhere he didn’t want to be. But at least his foster father had sounded angrier with the social worker for the surprise visit than with him for taking off in the dead of night, again.

Phil walked into the house and went straight up to his room to hide his overnight bag under his bed. He didn’t want anyone finding it if they did a search of his room. It was usually just a cursory check from the doorway, but it wouldn’t look good to have what might look like a runaway bag already packed.

He headed downstairs after giving his room a quick clean, hiding the cigarettes and ashtray he wasn’t supposed to have. He’d even hidden his art work, just to be extra careful.

“What’s going on?” Phil wondered as he walked into the living room to find Ella playing with her doll on the sofa. He sat beside her, unsurprised that she snuggled in.

It had barely been a few days since Estelle had left them for her posh school in Glencoe, so he had no hopes that he and Ella were about to join her.

“No idea. Just sprang it on us, as if we don’t have other things to do,” his foster mother said.

The poor excuse for a father patted her shoulder and actually explained. “She called ten minutes before we called you to say that she was coming over. No explanations, no reason. I asked if it had anything to do with Estelle, but she said no. It’s about you two,” he said, actually sounding confused.

Phil had to admit, he was, too. As far as he could remember, he hadn’t done anything wrong, lately. He had his agreement with his foster parents, so they couldn’t have ratted on him to the social worker, unless they found out some other way.

“I asked you to come right home because I need your help,” Mister Martin said. “She said you were both to pack your belongings. Everything you have. And anything Estelle might have left behind,” he continued, frowning to himself.

Immediately, Phil began to panic. Logan was only an hour away, but if he moved or was moved against his will, who knew if he would even get to see him again. And he couldn’t explain that to his foster parents, because they were homophobic.

With his heart thudding inside his chest, he made his way upstairs and began to pack everything he and Ella owned into two rucksacks that his foster father provided. They were worn and battered, so he guessed they were old junk from the attic. As long as they held his stuff, he didn’t care.

Phil pulled out his phone while he packed, dialing out to Logan. It was only fair to give him warning.

“Hey, gorgeous. Are you calling to say you got home? Or, please say that she cancelled?” he answered hopefully.

“No such luck. Logan…” He sighed and wet his lips, not sure how to say it. “Logan, we’ve been told to pack,” he explained briefly, sure that was all it needed.

There was silence on the other end, before his boyfriend spoke to fill it. “By who?”

“My foster dad,” Phil replied, calmly. “He said that’s why we were given two hours’ notice. The social worker told him that Ella and I are to be packed and, if Estelle’s left anything, we’re to take that, too. I don’t know what it means,” he confessed, feeling as if his whole world was falling apart.

“All I can think is that we’re being moved on,” Phil explained. “Maybe they know the Martins don’t really like us or they’re only after the money, or maybe it’s something I’ve done … I don’t know. I just…” He rubbed his forehead, worried that his life was going to break into pieces.

“I know, babe,” Logan replied with a deep sigh. “You want me to know that you love me. I know that. And I love you.” He could almost hear Logan’s smile as he talked; probably sad and sweet, with a little pout. “No matter what happens, that won’t change,” he promised.

“I’ll call you again, if I can, once I know what’s happening,” he vowed in return.

“Yes. And Phil?” He sounded unsure, so he hummed to let him know he was listening. “If you can, I want to see you tonight. Only if it won’t get you in trouble,” he asked softly.

“I know. I love you.”

“Don’t say goodbye,” Logan whispered.

“I wasn’t planning on it.” Phil hung up before he could start crying.

He hated living in foster care. If he had a normal family, things like that wouldn’t happen. But he didn’t and he had to get over that.

With a sigh, he switched off his phone. Some social workers didn’t like getting interrupted by phones, and others thought them a luxury he shouldn’t have. But he’d bought it with money the Martins had given him, and they told him it was his forever, as long as he did chores to earn his monthly bill tariff of only ten quid. It wasn’t a lot, but it was enough to keep in touch with Logan.

But, if he moved, he would lose even that small luxury.

Phil slammed his fist into the wall in frustration.

Life just wasn’t fair.

Dragon’s & Mistletoe

On a shopping trip to the mall with his brother-in-law, Lucas makes a bet he’s not one hundred percent sure he can win.

Christmas was Lucas’ favorite holiday and this year would be the best ever. Gone was his boring, less than stellar life. Now he had his dragon shifter mate and a family that actually liked to spend time with him. What more could he ask for?

Well, he wanted his mate to wear one of the ugliest Christmas Sweaters in the known universe. He had a hundred dollars riding on it. His mate could be as stubborn as a…well, a dragon, at times. He just might lose this bet, after all.

EXCERPT

Bennett came closer and sniffed the air. He jumped down next to Forrest and sniffed his hair and clothing. “You smell good.” Bennett’s cock got hard and he backed up, away from Forrest. “Why do you smell like that? Who have you been around?”
“New renter is all. It’s why I’m here actually.” His brother bounced around on the balls of his feet.
Bennett frowned and dismissed the wonderful smell. It was easy to do, especially when he moved away from Forrest. “Whatever it is, I said no.”
“But he needs a job and you need help. It looks like rag city threw up around here.”
That smell drifted to him again, but this time it hadn’t come second hand off Forrest. He turned and saw the most beautiful man Bennett had ever seen. Bennett’s cock hardened in his coverall and his eye changed. His dragon was pacing, wanting closer to their mate. Bennett stalked around Forrest, taking in deep breaths as he drew closer.
The cute little man took a step away from him then and his eyes widened. “Forrest,” the man said his brother’s name in a panic, which pissed Bennett’s dragon off.
Bennett growled out a warning to his brother to stay away from his mate.
“What is he? Oh, God, get him away from me before I freak the fuck out and lose my shit.” The man held a hand up in an attempt to stop him. “Seriously, dude. I don’t know what your problem is but I don’t always have control when I’m scared. Kinda like now. I don’t want to hurt you. I’m sure you’re a perfectly nice guy who just so happens to be looking at me like I’m a cheeseburger.”

4.5 out of 5 stars

Leave it All is the first book in the Saint Lakes series and it starts off with a bang. Or should I say a ball of fire from a very large dragon shifter?

Lucas is a young man on the run after finding out that he's a rare male witch and the local vampire coven will stop at nothing to get his powers. Eventually he ends up in Saint Lakes, a quiet community filled with other paranormals and sympathetic humans. Lucas is tired of running but with the vampires after him he doesn't have any choice. Within a few days of settling into his tiny cabin, Lucas meets Bennett and is completely thrown for that proverbial loop that changes his life.

Bennett, is the best combination of an alpha mate and a growly dragon. He immediately wants to protect Lucas and hide him away from everyone but Lucas isn't so sure about that at first. It doesn't take long to change his mind but he does and allows things to develop between himself and Bennett.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Lucas and Bennett. They were adorably cute, yet spicy hot all at the same time. The interactions with Bennett and his siblings were funny and very typical of how siblings interact. The missing half star for me comes because I felt that the relationships outside of the couple needed a little more filler. Also Lucas's backstory and lack of communication with his parents after he is settled makes me want a resolution for them. Since there are other books in the series I expect we will eventually see that happen.

I really can't wait to see what the other books in this series brings as I pretty much read Leave It All in one sitting. The next book coming up after this is Sage and Garridan's story, and something tells me this one will be a heartbreaker.

Excerpt from Everything a Big Bad Wolf Could Want by McKay

He rolled his head to look at Harlan, wanting to make sure he was all right, only to find Harlan lying on his side, looking at him. They gazed at each other in silence for a long moment, then Harlan reached out and stroked Whimsy's cheek.

"My wolf likes you," he said, his voice raspy with a strange undercurrent like a growl beneath the surface.

"That's good, isn't it?" Whimsy mustered a smile, trying to resist the urge to nuzzle against Harlan's fingers. That wasn't his right.

Suddenly, Harlan moved, and Whimsy found himself pinned beneath Harlan's large, heavy, naked body. "It likes you more'n it likes Barbara."

This close, Whimsy could see something feral in Harlan's eyes, as if the wolf hadn't loosened its grip completely yet, and he wanted to call it forth. He wanted to belong to it, and he was overwhelmed by a desire to show his throat and surrender that he'd never felt with anyone before.

"Maybe that should tell you something," he said boldly. If he were a noble, self-sacrificing man, he would have extricated himself and encouraged Harlan to think only of his girlfriend, but he wasn't that noble or self-sacrificing, and he couldn't bring himself to feel terribly guilty about it at the moment.

"I like women. But there's something about you, Whims..." Harlan bent his head and ran his nose along the length of Whimsy's throat as if scenting him, and Whimsy shivered as he tilted his head back.

Whimsy shifted beneath Harlan just enough to seat Harlan's lean hips in the cradle of his thighs, and Harlan settled there like they were made to fit together. Feeling bolder, Whimsy slid one hand along Harlan's arm to rest on his shoulder, testing to see what Harlan would allow.

"Liking women doesn't mean you can't like men too," he pointed out. "It's not an either-or thing for some people. Maybe you like both."

"Maybe I do. I've thought about other men before, including you. I don't know." Harlan released a long, slow sigh. "There's a lotta things I don't know these days."

"I know I like you a lot," Whimsy whispered, sliding his hand to the back of Harlan's neck and stroking it gently. "I think we could be good together."

Claudy Conn

However, my daughter lectured me and said that I should write about myself like I write my stories—so here goes…

While I have a fanciful imagination, I am a Capricorn—‘sure and steady’, and the obvious conflict leaves me jumbled. I have a computer, yes (invaluable), but I still jot down ideas on a scrap piece of paper, or a napkin in a restaurant. My imagination follows me wherever we go and sees so much more than meets the eye, and very often my husband will ask, ‘where are you now, baby?’

My dad was the one who clicked into my brain early on, and opened my mind to a world where a girl/woman could be so much more than ‘pretty in pink’. He told me to soar, and soaring for me, was writing.

We love horses and riding and when we migrated from New York to North Carolina we brought our barn with us—and yes, I’d rather muck out a stall than clean a house! My Irish, blue-eyed husband had to have a wolf and so we brought in our little hybrid wolf pup to our home. She is ¾ wolf/ ¼ German shepherd named Cherokee. Her 3 yr. old son (Rocky) is huge and eats everything and anything he can find and weighs more than 170 pounds!

Ireland and Scotland gave us the Fae and the Druids. In Ireland you can still visit the ‘Faery Mounds’. Think of the possibilities. I have and I’d love for you to join me as I explore them. So then, come with me and let’s see where we can go…

Julia Mills

I am a sarcastic, southern woman that would rather spend all day laughing than a minute crying. I have 2 of the most amazing daughters ever created, a menagerie of animals and a voracious appetite for reading. I decided to write the stories running through my brain and am having an absolute blast!! I read my first book, Dr Suess' Cat in The Hat, by myself at 4 and have been hooked ever since.
I believe a good book along with shoes, makeup and purses will never let a girl down. I know for a fact that all heroes inf all the books I have ever read or will ever write pale in comparison to my hero, my dad! I am a sucker for a happy ending and love some hot sweaty sex with a healthy dose of romance.
I am still working on my story but can guarantee you that it will contain as love and laughter as I can cram into it!!!!! Dare to Dream! Have the Strength to Try EVERYTHING! Never Look Back!

I like gravy.

This has nothing to do with the rest of my bio, but I thought you ought to know.

About the writing thing...

I wrote my first play when I was six and made my brothers perform it for my parents. I charged gum wrappers for admission (a steal, in my opinion, considering I had handed out the gum wrappers ahead of time). While I seriously doubt you'll be seeing any of my formative work on Broadway anytime soon, I can credit these early experiments with the first of many important lessons I learned about writing: no matter how brilliant your manuscript is, some kid can go streaking butt-ass nekkid across the living room, and totally undermine your vision.

Everyone watches the naked kid because running across the living room with your cheeks flapping in the breeze is friggin' hilarious.

Cue the lightbulb moment. People like funny stuff!

I never quite gave up on the writing thing, even as I tried my hand at being a dusty academic turned Executive Assistant (they paid me to nag! How cool is that?), but in those quiet moments when expense reports had been filed and to-do items checked off, the funny people in my head kept talking to me.

Yes, I know they have medication for that. It's called vodka.

Since they discourage drinking at work, I started writing instead. What came out was an amalgamation (vocabulary!) of all the things I love: funny stuff, art, psychology, food, people, and paranormal critters!

Et voila! The Case Files of Dr. Matilda Schmidt, Paranormal Psychologist were born.

When I'm not sitting in my office watching cat videos and pretending to write, I like cooking, knitting (badly), and reading anything that makes me laugh (like my bank statements).

I live in Colorado with my brilliant husband and three surly cats.
