Trey Taylor was loving life. Bass player to the world famous rock band Devil’s Lair, chicks falling to their knees at every turn, no one to be held accountable to for his actions…life rocked. He had all he needed, food to sustain his body, sex to sustain his libido, rock to sustain his soul. For years he walked to the beat of his own drum, and made no excuses to anyone. Running and hiding can temporarily distract your fate, but it won’t derail it. Fate was coming for him, whether he liked it or not. His past was gaining ground and threatening all the secrets he desperately tried to hide. His present was slowing him down, making him feel emotions he buried years ago. The two are about to collide. Will Trey survive the impact?

3.75 out of 5 stars

Backstage is the fourth book in the Back-Up series and features the ever elusive bass player Trey Taylor. It is best to read this series in order.

This was a very hard book for me to rate because there is so much backstory to Trey's life. In fact, the backstory tends to eclipse the current story which included the romance.

Trey's teens with his family is rather horrific. Between his apathetic mother and his controlling semi-psychotic father, I wonder why Trey never lost it himself. The only bright spot in his life is Taylor and he is captivated by her. What happens in the first third of Backstage really sets the stage, so to speak, for what makes Trey into the current version of Trey. Unfortunately, almost too many things happen to him and in some rare spots it caused the story, for me, to drag.

Flash forward 10 years - Devil's Lair is an extremely successful band with their own music, tours, groupies, and all the trappings that come with Rock Superstardom. And here's where I had hoped to see more of Trey grow from the closed off man whore he showed to the world. While he did grow and change, the shadows of his past kept him firmly locked up until the very end of the book.

That's not to say he didn't change and grow, he did. It's more that I didn't see as much relationship development with Trey and his lady that I tend to like in a story. Trey was bound and determined to label himself as toxic, no matter that he really wasn't toxic at all. The missing relationship pieces with Trey and his lady didn't allow me to really connect to them as a couple. However that is strictly my feelings and what I prefer to see in a developing relationship.

Overall it was a good solid story. I loved that the other band mates and their ladies were a good part of the second half of the book. As always every reader should form their own opinion of the story. What didn't work for me, may work for other readers. I do recommend this for anyone that has read the previous books in the series and those that have loved Trey from the start.
