Blurb

Innocence wasn’t a personality flaw.

Nicolas “Pure” Warner lived with the curse of a cute face and a terminal blush. He was waiting for his happily ever after. Yet he’d given up on finding his one. His partner and spotter wasn’t the type to settle down but he’d always been drawn to the other man. Pure decided he could live with that, but when powers outside their control took Raul away, Pure would stop at nothing to get Raul back even if that meant leaving the Trenton Security team behind.

Touching the sun only left you burned.

Raul Martinez was a brutal fighter. He’d worked freelance for several years at Trenton Security. There was one dark spot to the perfect job: Pure. The man was sweet and looking for forever. How did the damaged and unworthy ever hope to touch the sun without getting burned? And touching Pure would be a dream come true. When Pure endangers his freedom to save him, how could Raul convince his boy that letting him go was the only option?

EXCERPT

He still felt Raul staring at him and it pissed him off, “I said go away.”
“Not happening.”
“Hey, Pure, back to see me again?”
He lifted his head to see the usual ER doctor breeze in. The man was handsome, probably about his age. His visits normally correlated with this doctor's, his name was Carlton and the man had asked him out for coffee. He'd politely declined and it hadn't been brought up again.
“Not by choice.”
“I see that,” Carl said with a friendly smile. The man turned to where Raul stood. “Sir, will you leave us so I can--”
“Like that, wouldn't you, pretty boy?” Raul started to push away from the wall.
No one might think he paid much attention to the dangerous man other than when they were fighting but that wasn't true, he knew what the man was getting ready to do. “Raul!”
Raul pivoted with the grace of a trained warrior and glared at him. “What?”
“Quit being an asshole.”
“He wants--”
“Shut up, he wants to know if he should call the cops in case I'm being abused.”
“I would never fucking put my hands on you, Pure, what the fuck?”
It was odd to see Raul looking offended and slightly hurt. They fought, a lot, but he never once thought Raul would ever hit him. The man seemed obsessively protective of him. Which was weird since he was at least three inches taller and about fifty pounds heavier than Raul. Raul was a fighter. Brutal when it came to his work. And, yes, the man was an asshole but he wasn't bad when Raul wasn't ordering him around.
“It's standard procedure when someone has as many visits as Pure does and you always seem to be the one with him. I’m aware of his profession, but that doesn’t erase the chance of domestic abuse. Let's check you out.”
Raul was strangely quiet. The man was eerily silent on most days, an observer, and Raul didn't miss a thing. Except when Raul had anger rolling off him in waves, he knew the man was ready to strike. They’d spent several years anticipating their moods and moves, they worked as a perfectly synchronized team.
“I don't have a concussion, I'm not nauseous, my head does hurt but nothing out of the ordinary when you head butt a wall.” He heard Raul's deep growl and knew what was coming. He didn't need another lecture. “Raul, don't start.”
“Why don't you let me be the judge if you have a concussion or not?”
“Yes, sir,” Pure grumbled.

The forbidden is the sweetest lure.

Trenton Security’s Public Relations go-to was Hayden Gage. He loved his job, and it kept him distracted from the demons haunting his nightmares. His past wasn’t up for discussion, and Hayden wouldn’t allow it to intrude on his future. Yet, that was easier said than done when his best friend came to him desperate for help, and it put him right on the path to his one weakness.

Young didn’t equal lost.

Derrick Thorpe lived in the shadow of his father’s mistakes. Although he was adopted by Linus Trenton, he wanted to prove that he wasn’t like his biological father. When he was asked to go undercover to help at Trenton Security, it put him in close quarters with Gage. Being Gage’s was only an act, but when lines blur, what happens when the operation ends?

EXCERPT

Dishes rattled, and the low murmuring of conversations filled the interior as the lunch rush started to slow down at Heidi’s Diner. Typically, Gage ate alone before returning to the office, but today, he hadn’t turned out to be so lucky.

“How about I buy you dinner, Gage,” the confident young man across the table from him asked.

He stared at the boy as if he'd lost his mind. He slowly closed his laptop and calmly leaned back in the booth. The first time he’d seen Derrick Thorpe the kid was skin and bones, skittish from years of abuse by Derrick’s homophobic and racist father, the former Sheriff of Powers County, Georgia. The last time he’d allowed himself to be in the same space with Derrick, he had graduated from college. His boss, Linus, adopted Derrick and his toddler brother after the death of their father and, well, the mother hadn’t fought Linus when the man demanded she sign over custody.

Today Derrick was a man in his mid-twenties, and even with the pale blond stubble, he was still as pretty as the last time he’d seen him which had occurred Christmas a year ago. He’d made his excuses and went to stay with friends for the holiday. Fighting any of the Crews to get out of a family function always turned into a lost cause, and he’d found it easier to escape.

Gage forced a chuckle and a good-natured smile at the eager boy in front of him, but he felt neither of those actions. Because his greatest hell sat across from him and there was no way he’d ever allow the boy close to him.

“Not going to happen, kid.”

“Why not?” Derrick looked offended.

He wasn’t fucking around with some boy with Daddy issues. No matter how much he wanted to find out what his handprint looked like on the boy’s ass. Derrick wasn’t for him. Age difference aside, with Derrick’s history, he wouldn’t let the young man find out how interested he was.

“Go find someone your own age, Derrick.”

“What’s this got to do with age? I’m an adult, and I think I’m old enough to know what I want.”

He felt the muscles in his jaw clench. He didn’t like telling people no twice. When he made a decision, it was final. This little boy was asking for a spanking. A vision of Derrick over his knee came to mind, and he banished it as quickly as it appeared. This was getting out of hand. That’s why he’d avoided anything that had to do with seeing Derrick.

“And I said it wasn’t happening. I don’t like to repeat myself, Derrick.”

Derrick’s chin lowered to rest on his chest. There was a deep breath, and then Derrick looked up, his dark brown eyes shimmered with indignation.

“Yes, sir,” Derrick pushed the words through clenched teeth.

1) Who are your writing influences?

I don’t know if I can answer this question as I don’t think I have any actually influences. When I knew I wanted to be a writer, I’d developed an obsession with Beatnik literature in my early teens. They had this frenetic energy to it, a poetic edge and I wanted to create something like that. I wanted to write stories that broke the norms. One that had a life of their own. To be honest, I never saw myself as a romance author, I thought I’d completely crash and burn. I was quite surprised when my non-traditional characters/relationships were well-received.

2) Is there a genre you'd like to write in but haven't yet? Do you have any plans to venture into that genre? Why or why not?

Actually my greatest fear is Young Adult, but I will be stepping into the YA genre soon. As I’m switching genres I’ll be writing under another pen name. M. Jameson. I’m excited to bring my body positive/diverse stories to YA. I’m terrified but very much looking forward to the challenge.

3) What kind of music do you like writing to? Or do you prefer TV or silence?

This one is a bit hard. Each story is different. I wrote one book to standup comedy specials one after the other. One story wouldn’t flow to anything but Opera. Ghost was actually written to death metal. And sometimes, I need silence, especially if my brain is too full and I’m having an issue with focusing. It all comes down to what project I’m working and what the voices like.

4) Do you have any writing rituals?

Other than writing in 45 minute sprints with a fifteen minute break, I don’t have much of a ritual. Routine is important to me, so I try to write the same amount of hours everyday. The hardest thing for me is that I’m completely nocturnal, so my most productive hours are between 1 am and 6 am. I find I can’t settle in to really write until then.

5) What's up next on your writing schedule?

I have several project on the schedule. I just finished a Dark Romance called By Way of Pain for a multi-author series called Criminal Delights my contribution will release in May. Pure is definitely on the schedule for a March 2019 release. There’s also the second book in a MF series I’m working on. But projects always change depending on what holds my attention. So it’s a surprise even to myself.

EXCERPT

They had so little time to prepare, and he’d only have part of the team with him. He and the Crew functioned better as a single unit. Alex and him spoke sparingly as they were lost in their thoughts. They exited the lobby and let the driver take their bags as they slid into the backseat.

He focused his attention on the scenery outside the window as it shifted from towering buildings to the beach in the distance. The thirty minutes to the airport crept by, and as they pulled up in front of the terminal, he tensed. No way in fuck would they do that—a beautiful boy with dirty blond hair stood flanked by Pure and Raul. The sexy scruff no longer on Derrick’s face made him appear younger.

“What the fuck was Linus thinking?” He growled the question. Didn’t they understand what would happen to Derrick when the boy was completely at his mercy? He’d have to touch Derrick, maybe more depending on the surveillance around the estate. “I can’t do this.”

“Gage, he’s just a man, a pretty one, but just a man. It’s an assignment.”

“It’s not just an assignment or some man. How do I fight my instincts?”

“It’s him? The perfect one. The ghost that drifts through your dreams. The one you cut to forget?”

“Has the one person you’ve dreamed of for years ever appeared? Six years ago, I thought I was fine and”—he turned his attention to Derrick and studied the young man through the tinted glass—“he gave me this sweet, shy smile and I wanted to own him. I can’t have him just for that.”

“You’re not your old man, Gage. The Major is an evil bastard, and he can’t be satisfied unless he hurts someone. He gives sadists a bad name. He’s reaping his reward, wasting away alone in a nursing home, and no one is going to mourn when he’s dead.”

On a night with too much drink, he’d told Alex everything, and if Alex hadn’t mentioned it the next day, he’d never have remembered his loose tongue.

“Gage, he’s just a man. Focus on the mission, the end game and nothing more. Draw the line and don’t dare fucking cross it. This is about finding Cameron and bringing her home safe.”

He nodded but knew his agreement was a lie. He’d already crossed a line without knowing it. The proof was in his bag, his weakness tangible as the cool metal nestled in a bed of silk. He drew his disinterest and coldness around him, fixed his expression so as not to reveal his true feelings.

Livingston by J.M. Dabney - Blog Tour with Excerpt and Review

LIVINGSTON
TRENTON SECURITY BOOK 1
J.M. DABNEY
M/M ROMANCE
RELEASE DATE: 03.06.18

Cover Design:   RESSE DANTE

BLURB

He was the Beast without the escape clause.

Francis “Liv” Livingston was a beast. No matter if he wore a perfectly tailored suit or if he was in his tactical gear, people avoided looking at him. He was always first to volunteer for the jobs only a person with a death wish wanted. Tomorrows weren’t guaranteed. His boss had come to him and told him he needed him for a job. Linus knew the jobs he liked, but when he opened the file, it all went to hell.

Beauty was only skin deep.

Fielding Haskell made his way in the world on his looks. He’d earned his first film role before he could read a script. He didn’t want the fame. He wanted to go to college. He wanted a man who didn’t look at him and see how pretty he was. Unfortunately, a so-called fan only cared how attractive he was, and it earned him a personal bodyguard and a vacation. He looked forward to the break until he met the man in charge of his safety and wondered if the danger he left was worth dealing with a sudden attraction to a man who was colder than ice.

4 out of 5 stars

Livingston is the first book in the Trenton Security series but is truly a spin off of the Twirled World Ink, Brawlers, and Executioners series. While you could read this as the start of a new series, there are many characters from the other series that are included in the story which may cause some confusion. I personally recommend reading all the series in order so you know the characters and the previous encounters with the MCs of each book in the previous books.

I really won't go into the plot of Livingston, as with all the books in this world, too much will give away a lot of the story. I really think that readers should experience the story for themselves instead of reading a condensed, in my own words, version of the story. There is quite a bit that would spoil a lot of the story if I did that.

So I was a little torn over Livingston but I did go with the higher 4 star rating in the end. It fits well with the other previous series books and gives lots of time with the previous couples. However I felt that there was a slight lack of depth for Fielding over all. Now that's not saying he's a bad character, not at all. I rather adored the bright glimpses he gave occasionally through the story. He was over shadowed by Livingston, both by his story and him as a character. However, sometimes books work out fine with a disparity like this between the characters. I think overall, that their story did work out well, and kept it as a good 1st book in the Trenton Security spin-off series.

All that above being said, this author and their series are auto-buys for me at this point. The characters are consistent, usually one if not both have some trauma or issue they're working through. In some of the books the kink is a little more prominent than others, and some are more 'straight' romance than others might be. Overall though the stories are enjoyable reads, with very strong characters who aren't afraid to speak their minds, or act out accordingly based on their personality.

I highly recommend reading all four current series, and any new spin offs out of this group that the author might create. If you enjoy characters that are a little rough around the edges, a little different, and have a strong bond with their created family or crews these are definitely the books for you.

EXCERPT

He disconnected the call and slipped his phone back into his pocket. “That for me?”

“Yes, sir, I didn't mean—” Fielding swallowed hard. “I wasn't listening.”

The boy closed the distance between them quickly and thrust the mug at him. He caught it before it made a trip to the ground.

“Black. I noticed you didn't, um, put anything in your coffee. Is it strong enough?”

He hesitated with the mug at his lips. He swore the boy was holding his breath waiting for his approval. Taking a sip, it was perfect, but he took his time to see how long Fielding would keep himself from breathing. Nothing much amused him anymore, but that was doing it for him.

During the time the boy was in his home he'd picked up on little things about him. Fielding's need for approval. The boy's natural submissiveness. Fielding was also downright domestic.
“Not bad.”

“I'll do better. Are you going somewhere?”

“No, not for a few more days. We’ll head to the office for a check-in, and see what Linus’ boy, Hunter, found out about your stalker.” Interesting, the stalker comment hadn’t earned a flinch, but the moment he said boy, the kid’s perfectly arched brows rose. “Make a list of anything you need. We’ll hit the store before we come back.”

“Can I get candy and chips?”

The question took him by surprise. Fielding didn’t look like anything fattening ever passed his pretty lips.

“Do you want candy and chips?”

“So much.”

He hid his smile behind his mug at the boy’s longing sigh. He’d noticed the boy didn’t eat very much, not enough in his opinion, but Fielding wasn’t big. Tiny compared to him, probably not for normal sized men.

“We’ll see then.”

“Yes, sir.”

One more submissive little yes, sir with averted eyes and the boy was going to find himself on his knees worshiping his cock. He was too old for the boy, but his dick didn’t seem to have a problem with it. What made it harder to resist Fielding was a natural submissive born to be someone's boy. He was inclined to dominate and to have the perfect boy in front of him was more temptation than he'd ever experienced.

He needed to get Fielding as far away from him as possible and soon.

EXCERPT

He must have dozed off because the next thing he knew the bounce of the SUV knocked his head against the window. He straightened and rubbed at his eyes, but he didn't see anything other than trees in the headlights. There wasn't anything else.

“Where are we?”

Nervousness twisted his stomach as Livingston simply grunted. He wrung his hands on his lap and started to fidget on the seat. Suddenly the trees broke into a clearing, and a small cabin stood in the center. As Livingston pulled up, security lights illuminated the yard. Spotlights shined from trees around the perimeter. The vehicle came to a stop.

The man said nothing to him as Livingston opened the door and got out. He followed the man's lead and exited. By the time his feet touched the ground, Livingston already had his bag and was headed toward the house.

He practically jogged to catch up. Lights came on inside.

“Go inside. I have to grab the groceries.”

Before he could get a look at the huge man, he was gone again. He left his bag where Livingston had dropped it beside the door. The interior was one big room. A king-sized bed sat angled in the far corner with simple nightstands on either side. A living room area was on the opposite side. The place was masculine, not many personal touches. There wasn't any clutter to be seen. He wondered if the man was just obsessively neat.

He jumped when the door slammed behind him. Livingston passed him and headed toward the small kitchen area. Black cotton stretched across broad shoulders and back. He backed up until the door stopped him, he'd seen big men before. Studios had security guys, but he'd never seen a man this...massive. One of Livingston's thighs was probably as big around as him. This wasn't a good idea. He wanted to go home.

That's when the worst mistake of his life happened, Livingston turned toward him, and he gasped. The exposed skin on Livingston's right side was mottled with discolored scar tissue, and the damage was less severe on his face. Faded somewhat but still noticeable, the worst of them covered his neck and the skin exposed by the short sleeve of the man’s t-shirt. The man's eyes filled with rage and Livingston's strong jaw, even covered with a thick beard, he could see it clench in an agitated rhythm. He was caught between horror and pity, the man was...

“Better get used to it now, boy, you're looking at it for the next four months.”
