Minuet by A.M. Leibowitz - Blog Tour with Exclusive Excerpt and Giveaway

Minuet

A.M. Leibowitz has a new queer MMF romance out: "Minuet."

When it comes to love, Mack Whitman prefers to limit it to writing songs and poetry. Aromantic, he’s content to have quality friendships and people who sometimes also share his bed. He’s never considered himself the jealous type. But when he sees everyone in his life, from his best friends to his occasional partners, moving toward more settled lives, it leaves him frustrated, disappointed, and worried he’ll be left behind.

Amelia Roberts doesn’t care about the genders of her partners as long as she follows her one rule: Don’t ever fall in love. It’s worked out well for her, since that’s a line she knows she’ll never cross with Mack. He’s as happy as she is to keep things as they are. The only trouble with her philosophy is that she didn’t count on meeting the one person who might change her mind.

Jomari O’Brien’s supportive family made it smooth for him to transition several years ago. Since then, he’s been in and out of love, and other people’s beds, plenty of times, and he has no regrets. Each one is a small part of a larger symphony. Becoming involved with two people at once is a more complicated harmony, but it’s one he’s willing to learn as long as they are.

Their individual melodies become discordant as they struggle to make them fit together. But if all three can learn to play with each other instead of against, they may yet hit all the right notes.

About the Series:

When Trevor, Nate, Jamie, and Mack moved in together, they had no idea how it would change their lives. Four roommates. Four stories about living and loving in the City on a Hill.

MEME2 - Minuet

'They paid for the groceries and headed for Mack’s van. Once they’d loaded it up, Mack went to start the van, but Trevor put a hand on his arm.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“I’m not letting you go home without talking about what the hell that was back there. You were really pissed off when you came to see me. You’re calm now, but if you go back home, you’re gonna get right back into that mess all over again.”

He was right, and Mack knew it. He turned over the engine. “Look, it’s freezing out here. I’ll drive you back, and I’ll explain on the way.”

“Fair enough.”

Mack waited until they were out on the road to say, “It’s fucking weird, having both of them together. It’s not like it hasn’t happened before, but not like this. I don’t know. It felt like they were doing this bonding thing, and I wasn’t part of that.”

“I get it,” Trevor said.

“Do you? Because your family looks different.”

“What is it you wanted? To have Amelia to yourself? You’ve said she’s not your girlfriend. So why does it matter?”

“I don’t know!” But he did know. He had a very clear idea why it bothered him so much. Mack slammed his palm against the steering wheel. “She and I…we’re both fucking Jomari. We all know, but we’ve never hung out just the three of us.”

Trevor seemed to contemplate that. “Yeah, I’d say that’s different from my family. It really bothers you, huh?”

“Not that. It’s…” Mack didn’t know how to explain the way he’d seen the tender gestures between Amelia and Jomari. Sure, she would do the same for him, but it didn’t look or feel identical for some reason Mack couldn’t pinpoint. “I guess they’ve been getting to be closer since she started playing with Cian’s band.”

“Makes sense. Spending more time together. But you think there’s more going on?”

“I don’t know,” Mack admitted. “Up until now, I wouldn’t have thought so. She always said she was mostly into women. She doesn’t date men, and she made that clear to me. I didn’t care. But now here she is, and I can’t really tell what’s going on. She’s already cancelled plans with me so they could go out.”

“Ah.” Trevor was quiet a moment. “People change, you know. Until Andre, I thought I only loved Marlie and the couple times I fooled around with guys were, like, just sex. Then after Andre, I thought maybe Marlie was my exception and I mostly wanted guys. Now I’m not sure, but it doesn’t matter because this works for us. Jamie’s only into men, but I know he’s fucked women on camera and enjoyed it. He said Cian can’t separate love and sex, he’s got a high drive for both, and he doesn’t care about gender at all. Maybe Amelia’s needs have changed.”

“Maybe.”

It wasn’t only about whether or not her relationship with Jomari was changing. It was why. Why now, after years of things being the same? What made him different from everyone else? Mack hated the feeling she’d finally had enough and was choosing someone who might be able to give her what he couldn’t. But why would she have told him their kind of relationship was enough if it wasn’t? She knew who he was and that he made no apology for it. Was it like Trevor said, and she was changing, or had she been dishonest?

“Listen,” Trevor said as they pulled into his driveway. “Why don’t you invite Jomari for Thanksgiving?”

“What? Why?”

“It might be easier if it’s not the three of you having to figure this out alone, that’s all.” Trevor unbuckled, but he didn’t move. “Talk to them. The only way I made it work with Andre and Marlie is by telling them both the truth. And the only way I didn’t fuck it up with Jamie was by telling them I needed him in my life too.” He curled his fingers into a fist. “If only we could work that out.”

Mack didn’t reply. Jamie was still a sore spot for both of them. He helped Trevor unload the groceries and put things away. They had some time for him to think about inviting Jomari, but he wasn’t sure he was going to.

“Thanks for your help,” Trevor said. “Hey, you feeling better?”

“Maybe.” Mack accepted the Night Crawlers from Trevor. “I should get these to the others.”

“Good luck.”

Back in the van, Mack looked at the package on the passenger seat. For once, Trevor was right, but tonight he didn’t have the right words. Instead, he would bring the sour gummies as a peace offering and sit with them this time, even if it meant he had to watch confusing science fiction shows. He pulled out onto the road and headed for home.

She let him pull her to her feet. They threw away their cups and stepped carefully back out onto the ice. The sky was fully dark and had clouded over. A few fat snowflakes began to fall, and Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” was playing over the speakers. Hand in hand, Amelia and Jomari circled the ice. The crowd had thinned, giving them room to make wider arcs.

As the song finished, Jomari pulled to a stop and faced Amelia. They stood on the ice, the light snow swirling around them. Jomari took the ends of her scarf and tugged her closer until she almost fell against him. They both laughed. Amelia looked up, lost for a moment in his beautiful, dark eyes, captivated by the mischievous sparkle. He was still grinning, but there was something else there too, an intensity she hadn’t noticed before. He leaned in, and she realized he was going to kiss her.

They’d kissed before; they’d been in bed together before. So why was her heart galloping, her palms sweating, and heat rushing to her cold cheeks? What could possibly be more special about this than any of the previous times?

When their lips met at last, it was pure magic. And that’s when she knew what was different. This kiss broke all her carefully indexed rules. Six months ago, her life was organized—coded, stacked, and filed in tidy bins. There was Mack and work and the occasional good-time-had-by-all with casual dating and a hook-up here and there. Jomari razed her orderly system with a single fit of his mouth to hers against a backdrop of skating and fresh snow. It was like a scene out of one of those sugary rom-coms Jamie was so fond of.

She ended the kiss first. Though her pulse still throbbed in her ears, she tried to stay calm as she backed away. She had to get back to the playfulness of their earlier romp, when her only worry was keeping just ahead of Jomari on the ice. It was her fault anyway, for letting him catch her, in more ways than one.

Jomari cupped her cheek, smiling. Amelia made her best effort to smile back in spite of her mad storm of emotions, all the things she’d tried so hard to keep in check over the last few months. She’d been afraid Mack would hurt Jomari, and now she was the one putting his heart at risk. She breathed slowly until she relaxed then turned her face to brush her lips against his palm.

He dropped his hand and said, “Ready to go?”

“Okay.”

“Did you want to—”

Amelia did want to. But she knew this time it would be a bad idea. She had to clear her head, to think about what this meant and what she wanted. “I…can’t,” she said.

“Oh.” Jomari’s face fell. Amelia didn’t think it was about denying him a place in her bed, not this time.

She put her hand on his arm. “I’m sorry. I need a little time, okay? This was wonderful. But…can we slow down a bit?”

“Of course.” Jomari’s voice was flat, disappointed. He sighed. “I’m sorry. Take all the time you need, okay? I’m here.”

Amelia closed her eyes and nodded. She didn’t know if she’d ever be ready for what she sensed he was offering. He took her hand again, and she opened her eyes. They made their way off the ice and back to the building to return their skates. Somehow, it seemed fitting that the song now playing was about heartbreak.

Synopsis

When Chris’s stepfather passes away and leaves Chris a house and a wedding ring, it seems like the perfect opportunity to take the next step in his relationship with John.

So, they’re both in for a nasty shock when Chris’s mother is vehemently opposed to the idea. Despite three years of history to prove otherwise, she insists that John is only a temporary feature in Chris’s life, and a man like him can’t be expected to stay with someone like Chris in the long run.

Can Chris persuade her that she’s wrong in time for the wedding—or will there be an empty space in the photographs?

Rather appropriately for the occasion, it had been raining all day.

Chris took in a deep lungful of smoke and exhaled it smoothly into the chilly afternoon. The memorial garden was blissful after the hustle and bustle of the funeral. The air was open and soothingly cool, not like the stuffy heat of the chapel. He could breathe again. He could gather the shards of grief around himself and try to put them back together, without having to think about his mother’s sobbing at his side, or the favourite song that had been played for Jack’s last journey, a song now stained with sadness.

The gentle patter of raindrops on the umbrella calmed him, and the far-off chirping of some irate bird provided a gentle counterpoint. Life slowed. From farther off, the chattering of friends and relations had finally died away, and Chris stubbed out the remains of the cigarette as he heard the crunch of gravel.

He’d never been here before, but the footsteps coming down the path were as familiar as his own. Thunderously heavy, an immense weight crushing each step into the ground even as the pace was slow and steady. That slight stress on one step, followed by lightness on the other. That dodgy knee from the rugby accident last year had left its mark in the form of a subtle limp and a tiny scar like a fish hook that made its owner go all shivery when Chris kissed it. Even the speed with which each step followed the other was familiar, like the tower of a body might collapse if the feet were spread too far apart. The hands that clasped Chris’s shoulders were as big as spades, and only one person in his life was tall enough to kiss the crown of his head without the use of a box to stand on.

Chris leaned back into the wall of a man who had arrived and lifted the umbrella to let him into the shelter.

“Your mum’s gone home with Lauren.”

The relief was bittersweet. Mum and Lauren had always gotten along, despite one being Dad’s ex-wife and one being Dad’s girlfriend. Lauren would look after her—even if it was Chris’s job. Even if he was supposed to.

“You did great.”

Chris swallowed thickly. “I think it’s just sunk in.”

It hadn’t been real. It had taken so long that it had never quite felt real until this moment.

Jack had died a long, slow, terrible death. Weeks in the hospice. Chris would never forget the gargling way his stepfather had breathed near the end, or the clammy coolness of his skin. The way Mum had cried, soft little sniffles at the corner of the bed on that final day. The gaps between the gurgles, until finally there had been nothing but the eeriest silence. The shaking in his fingertips was over.

Everything was over. The smell of cigar smoke on the tenth of March, the one day of the year Jack lit up. The shuffle of his slippers. The whirr of that deathtrap of a stairlift. The croaking way he’d chuckled, a noise that in a bigger man would have been a belly laugh. The little huff he let out when Mum was in one of her moods, followed up hastily with “Yes, dear, of course…” And Chris had never seen it, but he’d known Jack had flashed him little smirks across the table at such moments, conspiratorial understandings between the two men who were most subject to her fussing and flapping, the two men who loved her most. Gone.

“Jack’s gone.”

“I know.” The words were soft but firm. The hands on his shoulders rubbed down to his elbows and then back up in a long, smooth stroke. “But so is the pain and the suffering. He’s not hurting anymore. And if he was right, then he gets to see his daughter again now.”

Chris coughed a shaky laugh. It bubbled out of his ribs like water overflowing. “No such thing as heaven.”

“You never know.”

Chris sighed and leaned his head back. He closed his eyes and hummed as a kiss was pressed into his temple.

“I should go and see Mum,” he said.

But his chest ached. His ribs felt like they were going to cave in, and a red-hot pain followed the scar, as if he’d been wrapped in metal wire, melting against his skin. He hurt.

“I want to go home.”

The hands pulled. He was turned by the shoulders and drawn into a rain-damp embrace. The arms around his back made the pain worse, but Chris clung and burrowed into the embrace anyway. The kiss on the top of his head slotted two of the jagged edges together and sealed them shut again. The grief ebbed a fraction.

“Come on, then. Let’s go home.”

Subgenre: Contemporary Rockstar romance, LGBT romance (m/f with a queer trans man and a pansexual cis woman)

Warnings: Plot revolves around the stalking of a rockstar. Two scenes in a hospital. Short flashback to the start of attempted sexual assault of a minor that is quickly interrupted.

Universal link: books2read.com/u/mgLQD7

Book synopsis:

Twisted Wishes bass player Mish Sullivan is a rock goddess—gorgeous, sexy and comfortable in the spotlight. With fame comes unwanted attention, though: a stalker is desperate to get close. Mish can fend for herself, just as she always has. But after an attack lands her in the hospital, the band reacts, sticking her with a bodyguard she doesn’t need or want.

David Altet has an instant connection with Mish. A certified badass, this ex-army martial arts expert can take down a man twice his size. But nothing—not living as a trans man, not his intensive military training—prepared him for the challenge of Mish. Sex with her is a distraction neither of them can afford, yet the hot, kink-filled nights keep coming.

When Mish’s stalker ups his game, David must make a choice—lover or bodyguard. He’d rather have Mish alive than in his bed. But Mish wants David, and no one, especially not a stalker, will force her to give him up.

Teaser Excerpt:
Mish put her hands on her hips. “I could stick you in my pocket!”

“You could try.” He grinned up at her. “But I’m well versed in taking tall people down, I have a couple of black belts, and was in the army for twelve years. So you might not succeed.”

This time, it was her mouth that twitched up. “Might not?”

“I’m confident in my abilities, but never say never, you know?” He rocked back on the stool. “Besides, I saw the photos of your assailant. You’re tough, Sullivan.”

“Call me Mish.” Her hands were still on her hips, but her smile was wide. “Sounds like I might not need to take care of you.”

He shrugged. “I’m pretty self-sufficient.”

“But never say never?” She winked at him.

He snorted. Yeah, Mish Sullivan was something else. Beautiful. Sexy. Talented. Intelligent. Too bad she was also the job, `cause that kind of woman made his blood heat. “Life is full of surprises.”

With that, Mish stepped back and seemed to loosen up. “All right. He can stay.” She directed that bit at Ray. “But I want to see the shit you’ve been getting about me.”

Ray looked at Adrian, and Adrian raised a brow at David.

Time to earn his keep. “You should share them. Mish deserves to know what’s going on. It’s her life, and she’s right—she can take care of herself.”

“But you’re going to be guarding me.”

“Technically, I’m running security for all of you.” Technically. The threat was to Mish, so he’d be paying the most attention to keeping her safe. Still, he would look out for the whole band.

She shook her head, sending cascades of red curls around her face. “So no personal hot bodyguard just for me?”

Hot? That sent a bolt of awareness straight through him and he shifted on the seat. Flirting wasn’t a good idea, especially with Ray and the rest of the guys right there, but he couldn’t help himself.
“Princess, if you need a personal bodyguard, I’m sure we can work something out.” He kept his tone light and humorous.

Cutie Pies by Barbara Bell - Blog Tour with Author Guest Post and Giveaway

Hi, I’m Barbara Bell, romance author extraordinaire, and welcome to the blog tour for my debut novella Cutie Pies! Over the next week I will be travelling the internet sharing some thoughts on my book. Follow along and join the discussion!

About Cutie Pies

Joey works at Cutie Pies, the smallest adult store in Sydney. After his parents kicked him out years ago, the haphazard shop became his home away from home and is the only place where he can embrace his queer, quirky, and—okay—sometimes a little awkward self.

When Mick, a new-to-town customer, walks in asking for a dildo, Joey thinks it’s all a part of the day’s work. Except Mick’s large dark eyes, shy smile, and kissable lips—along with the ten-inch dildo he bought—quickly win him a starring role in Joey’s nightly fantasies.

Joey can’t stop thinking about him, and Mick’s continued visits to the store make him even harder to forget. Mick is shy and sweet, but also secretive and uncertain. As the two grow closer together, Joey starts to wonder what Mick really wants from him, and whether he can risk falling in love with someone who might not be free to love him back.

Coming Out of the Closet… as a Writer?

I came out of the closet when I was fourteen to a girl I was not-quite friends with during PE class. It was an overcast day and we were sitting on the edge of our school’s rundown tennis court, watching the more enthusiastic students play while we pretended our rackets were guitars. Then, in the middle of the conversation – as if it was an afterthought and not something I’d spent days practising in the mirror – I told her I was bisexual.

She asked some questions. I answered them.

And just like that I was out of the closet.

In the months that followed I came out to more people including (eventually) my brother and then my parents.

At the time I wasn’t connected with any queer support groups, either online or in real life. I didn’t know what the rainbow flag was, how dangerous coming out could be, or (truthfully) what it all meant. I just knew I liked boys and girls and that ‘bisexual’ was the word for that.
Nevertheless, coming out was frightening, not because I thought there was anything wrong with being queer, but because I was scared of being scrutinized and rejected. Or, even just being thought of as weird.

Which is kind of what I feels like to be a writer.

There is nothing wrong with being a writer… but it’s still scary to admit. It’s scary to put your work out there for other people to judge. It’s scary telling your friends and family that you’ve written a book and now you’re trying to publish it. It’s scary realising people you know are going to read what you wrote and that it may alter their opinions of you.

It’s scary coming out of the closest as a writer.

But it’s also exciting. And revealing. And all those things coming out of the closet should be.
Which is why these last couple of months, in the lead up to the release of my debut novella, I have been making an effort to tell people that I am a writer. A queer romance writer to be specific. And, just like when I was fourteen coming out of the closet I’ve received a lot of encouragement, a lot of awkward questions, and a few (let’s just say) raised eyebrows. But that’s okay.

Because if fourteen-year-old-me can come out of the closet as bisexual then twenty-four-year-old-me can certainly come out of the closet as a writer.

What about you? Are you an out of the closet writer? Or is writing a slightly embarrassing secret? Let me know in the comments and don’t forget to leave your contact details for a chance to win an ecopy of the book. Also, check out the rest of my book tour to learn more about me, my thoughts on writing, and my debut novella Cutie Pies.

Cheers,
Barb

Scratch Track by Eli Lang - Blog Tour with Exclusive Excerpt and Giveaway

Hello, I’m Eli Lang.  Welcome to the blog tour for my contemporary m/m romance with rock stars, Scratch Track.  Join in on the discussion in the comments and have fun!  Thanks for stopping by!

About Scratch Track

Being a roadie isn’t everyone’s idea of a dream job, but it’s all Quinn wants. He loves touring, loves getting to hear amazing music every night and, more than anything, loves being someone the band members of Escaping Indigo can lean on.

When Quinn joins the band in the recording studio, it’s supposed to be fun, but it only seems to remind him of doubts he thought he’d left behind—doubts about his brother’s death, his place with the band, and his ability to care for and support his friends. So when his ex, Nicky, tumbles back into his life, Quinn’s completely unprepared.

The failure of his past romance with Nicky is yet another strike against Quinn’s confidence. But Nicky’s unassuming kindness makes it hard for Quinn to resist a new entanglement. Quinn isn’t sure they won’t make the same mistakes again, but he wants a second chance, even if that means facing the past, learning to let his friends support him, and proving to Nicky that, this time, he’ll be someone Nicky can rely on.

Of course, it ended up being me who was stressed that evening when I went to get ready for my . . . what? Date? We were just two guys going for dinner. But it seemed almost like a date. It felt like it was important.

And I could still picture the blush on Nicky’s face, the nervous twitch of his fingers, his focus anywhere but on me when I asked and he decided how to answer.

And I could still feel him in my arms, that refreshed memory, something I’d never thought I would get to have again. There was something between us, still, whether either of us was sure what it was yet or not.

So maybe we actually were going on a date. Maybe we weren’t. It almost didn’t matter. I was going to be tense either way, and either way, I wanted to look good. Wear the right thing. Whatever that was.

This was a harder challenge than I’d imagined, though. It wasn’t like I’d brought any nice clothes with me to a recording studio, knowing we were going to be hanging out and catching quick meals after long days. T-shirts and shorts and jeans and a couple of hoodies in case it got cold. That was basically always my wardrobe, and it had never occurred to me that I might need something else. Not for this trip, at least.

Ava wandered into my room and sat on my bed, her phone in her hand. I was standing in the bathroom and could see her reflection in the mirror.

“This isn’t your room,” I said, half-gentle, half-exasperated.

She raised her head and glanced, pointedly, around the room, at the mess Tuck and I had already managed to make in a few short days. I hadn’t exactly helped by strewing my clothes everywhere while trying to figure out what to wear. “I’m well aware,” she said, a slight dry edge to her voice.

“Tuck isn’t here either.”

Her eyebrows crept upward. “I see that.”

I dropped my hands to the counter and took a deep breath, then turned around to face her. “Sorry. I’m sorry.” I was being a jerk. The nerves were getting to me, and she was being kind enough not to say anything too harsh. “Why are you here?”

She slipped her phone into her pocket, crossed her legs in front of her, and leaned forward. “Tuck said you were in here freaking out. And that you probably needed a girl’s help.” She held up a hand.
“I’m not going to get into how sexist that is. I already told Tuck. He knows better than to say something like that again.”

I eyed her up and down. She was wearing a T-shirt with the sleeves cut off and a faded logo emblazoned on the front, and jeans that had holes not only in the knees, but up the backs of her thighs. “I’m not sure you were what he meant by that, either.”

She laughed, tipping her head back. “No, probably not. Probably he’s hoping I’ll call Cara and she can assist you over the phone.” Then her expression went more serious, and she lowered her voice, so I knew she wasn’t joking anymore. “What’s the matter, Quinn?”

I sighed, and plopped down on the other bed. I dropped my hands between my knees. “I asked Nick out. To dinner.” I flicked my gaze to hers, then looked away. “And I was trying to find something decent to wear. I’m all . . .” I sighed and shrugged. “I didn’t even notice Tuck come in. I didn’t see him. I’m . . .” This time I gestured at the clothes.

Ava leaned forward a little bit more, and reached out to tuck a strand of my hair behind my ear. It was too long—not like I’d let it grow out because I liked it that way, but like I’d forgotten to get it cut. It was long enough to have a slight curl, and pieces were tickling my chin and getting in my eyes. Her touch was gentle, pushing the strands back, smoothing out the places I’d ruffled up with my fingers.

“Why do you need something nice to wear to go out with Nicky?” She pulled her hand away and sat back.

I opened my mouth, closed it, tried again. “I think it’s a date.”

She smiled, softer than before. “I saw Nick earlier. He was, like, floating a fucking foot above the ground. It’s a date. Or he thinks it is. Or he’s hoping for something from it.” She narrowed her eyes. “How can you not know if it’s a date if you’re the one who asked? Do you want it to be a date?”

I hesitated. I didn’t know how to answer either of those questions. I shrugged instead. “I don’t know. But I do know I want to look good for him.”

About the Escaping Indigo Series

Escaping Indigo is a busy band, whether they’re playing edgy rock music in a darkened theater, touring the country together, or meeting up with other musicians at a summer festival. And they’re always writing new melodies, new riffs, and new lyrics to tell their stories.

Micah, a drummer, is hoping to leave the memories of his old band behind by going on tour with Escaping Indigo as a stagehand. But there he meets Bellamy, the lead singer, and he finds himself tangled in a romance that makes him face everything he’s lost.

Ava, drummer for Escaping Indigo, is hoping that time away from the band will give her a chance to sort through her complicated feelings for her best friend, who’s in love with someone else. But a chance meeting with a beautiful woman leads to an unexpected romance that makes Ava rethink her plans for her future.

From unrequited love to finding your way, old friendships to lost dreams, surprising secrets to unexpected encounters, Escaping Indigo has a song to suit.

About Eli Lang

Eli Lang is a writer and drummer. She has played in rock bands, worked on horse farms, and has had jobs in libraries, where she spent most of her time reading every book she could get her hands on. She can fold a nearly perfect paper crane and knows how to tune a snare drum. She still buys stuffed animals because she feels bad if they’re left alone in the store, believes cinnamon buns should always be eaten warm, can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about the tardigrade, and has a book collection that’s reaching frightening proportions. She lives in Arizona with far too many pets.
