A man without memories, and the cop who never gave up hope.
When he wakes up in the hospital, the victim of a brutal beating, John Doe has no memories of who he is or who hurt him. The cops can find nothing to identify him and he can't remember anything to help... except the name Ethan and one recurring place from his dreams. Two words, and they're not much, but it's a start: Crooked Tree.
Detective Ethan Allens has never stopped searching for the two boys who vanished. When a report lands on Ethan's desk that may give new leads, he jumps at the chance to follow them up. The man he finds isn't his brother, but it's someone who could maybe help him discover what happened twelve years ago.
What neither man can know is that facing the very real demons of the past could destroy any kind of future they may have together.

4 out of 5 stars
The Rancher's Son is the second book in R.J. Scott's Montana series. While you could read the book as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the series in order since the plot and characters are carried from book to book.
This story carries on almost immediately after Crooked Tree Ranch but this is mostly Ethan and Adam's story. The Rancher's Son dives a bit more into the events of 15 years ago when Justin and Adam disappeared. When Ethan is called up to Chicago to identify a John Doe who mentioned his name, he gets a surprise when he finds Adam in the hospital with no memory. Ethan is shocked at Adam's being alive, and his current condition and vows to help him gain his memory back.
The Rancher's son is just as much a mystery as it is a romance. The romance is a slow burn second chance romance between Ethan and Adam. Ethan is worried to push too hard, and to allow himself to fall for Adam until he's regained his memory. Adam doesn't necessarily feel that way because in his mind Ethan equals home. It's the one thought that he feels is right the entire time he's trying to regain his memory. While that's the most I'll give out of the plot because this story could lend itself to a lot of spoiler opportunities otherwise.
I actually enjoyed this book more than the first story. I'm not sure if it was the characters felt better suited to each other, or if the story just flowed better for me. It could even be a combination of both aspects, but whichever it was, it worked to make this an un-put-downable type of story. The pacing was perfect from the first paragraph, the characters worked well together, and the story was engaging and kept you coming back for more. I liked that both big, tough cop Ethan, and Adam even in his amnesiac state, were vulnerable but still able to rekindle their connection while working through their vulnerabilities and trying to solve Adam's disappearance.
The Rancher's Son is a good, solid second book in the Montana series by R.J. Scott and definitely worth a read.
