Restaurant owner Tom Fearnes has loved his partner Cass for as long as he can remember, but their work often keeps them apart. When he meets a striking young man named Jake on the vibrant streets of Camden Town, their heady first encounter takes an unexpected turn.

Jake Thompson can hardly believe his luck when he wakes up in Tom’s bed. Tom is gorgeous, kind, and . . . taken. Tom’s explanation of his open relationship leaves Jake cold, but Tom is too tempting, and when hard times force Jake to accept Tom’s helping hand, he finds himself between two men who’ve lost their way.

Cass Pearson is a troubled soul. He loves Tom with all he has, but some days it feels like he hasn’t much to give. Jake seems like the perfect solution. Cass risks everything to push Jake and Tom together, but Jake resists, wary, until the darkness of Cass’s past comes to call. Then Jake finds himself the last man standing, and it’s time to dig deep and shine a light for the men he’s grown to love.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Misfits is the first book in Garrett Leigh's Urban Soul series. It's a contemporary romance with a triad couple.

So I'll be bluntly honest to start, I'm a total fangirl for pretty much everything that this author has written and will write in the future. Misfits, though, is that one book that I could re-read 100 times and never, ever get sick of it. I pretty much find some new little bit that I didn't catch with each time I read it.

The story's original couple Cass and Tom have been together since their early 20s. They've grown together, created a life together but one that is uniquely different that most relationships. They have an open relationship knowing that they always come back to each other, and sometimes even share other partners together. This relationship has worked for them for a while, and for who they both are, it works with their personalities as well. See Cass, while he loves Tom, he doesn't think he's enough for him. After all Tom didn't grow up like Cass did and have it leave he feel not necessarily broken but not always pulled together.  Tom however doesn't see Cass the way Cass sees himself. Cass makes him happy and complete, or so he thinks until he meets Jake by chance one night. Jake is the almost magical missing piece that brings Tom and Cass even closer together.

There isn't truly any intrigue or action/adventure in this book, it's completely about these three men and their falling in love. While it doesn't happen overnight with all of them, at the same time, the story's progression is perfectly paced, shows all three men and their points of view, and how each fits in the relationship. They each bring strengths and weaknesses, and help hold each other together, and that's what really makes this book work well. There isn't any one perfect partner in their triad. They all have things their working through, and each of them means something different to the others, which is what makes their relationship work on all levels.

Other than wanting another book with just this triad, there are no major issues with the story, the characters, or the pacing. It all just flows together in one moderately angsty, but perfectly realistic story. Garrett Leigh has a mastery with the flawed character archetype, and Misfits is no exception. Even 2 years after I initially read it, this book holds up to its original rating with me.

I highly recommend reading this one before Stray, book two in the series, is released. While Strays features a different set of main characters, one of the mains, Nero, is introduced in Misfits. If you haven't read this book yet.. go! Pick it up...read it in one sitting! You'll thank me later. ;)
