Duke Morgan owns and operates one of the largest bail bond companies in Atlanta. Not only does he bond criminals out of jail, he and his notorious group of bounty hunters will also track them down and ensure they show up for court.
Roman ‘Quick’ Webb is Duke’s business partner and best friend. Both men are in their forties and have given up on the happily ever after with the ranch-style home, and white picket fence. They’d both tried it and failed miserably. But they have their friendship and they have the business.
When Quick’s son, Vaughan Webb returns – after seven years - from studying abroad with his law degree in hand, he’s back to claim what he’s always wanted…his fathers’ best friend… Duke Morgan. Vaughan has always claimed to be a classic gentleman with an old soul. He didn’t party and screw up in school like his buddies. He was focused and dedicated to becoming the man worthy of Duke’s love.
It’s a complex and messy situation as Duke and Quick figure out how to still be best friends when one of them is sleeping with his friend’s one and only son. But when Duke is hurt on the job, all the unimportant trivialities fall to the wayside and Vaughan and Quick put their heads together to save Duke.
Part I of the Promises story is about Duke and Vaughan. Part II will be about Quick and his realization that it’s not too late for any of them to find love.
4.5 out of 5 stars
I'll admit I'm a bit of a addict for this author's Nothing Special series. The men in those books were Alphas to the extreme but still able to fall in that forever kind of love, in their own way. Promises: Part 1 is Duke's story, the bounty hunter we met in Judge's book, Don't Judge. We see a different side to Duke in this book, he's reeling a bit from Judge breaking things off with him and then finding his partner in Austin.
What Duke doesn't know is that he's getting ready to meet his forever head on with his best friend's son. Vaughn, has had Duke in his sights since he was 13 and has never wavered in his attraction to him. He's also never acted on it until now. He decided long ago that he wanted to be on even footing with Duke when he finally told him his feelings. With his law degree under his belt and being back in the states, Vaughn is more than ready to show Duke that he is the one for him.
While this is a typical A.E. Via book in that we have two very Alpha males starting a relationship, this book is different then her others. Promises Part 1 isn't the non-stop roller-coaster ride the books in her Nothing Special series had been. This is a character driven book vs an action driven book and it really works best for these two characters. Duke has to come to terms with his best friend's son being in love with him and also a few other obstacles in this story. It made for a slow burn relationship based story. I have to say that for Vaughn and Duke, it really worked for their story in all the right ways.
There were a few cringe-worthy moments and a few things that made me go what? but over all the story was good and entertaining. Which is what I want in a book. I read romances because I want a little bit of an escape from the daily grind. Promises Part 1 definitely gave me that escape, enough to overlook any flaws in the storyline that didn't jar me out of said storyline. So this is one to pick up if you loved this author's other books, just don't expect a God and Day type action book.
