Gideon tapped the pen on the desk in nervousness at
having Eddie so close. Not for the first time he wished he could smell him, see
if the man’s scent was sweat or cologne, or soap or sweet-scented sugar from
the creations he made.
“She did, did she? She can be a really interfering biddy.
And how many times have I told you to call me Gideon? Mr. Kent was my dad. And

Jax had been watching the horses, trying to
coax one across to him, when someone had kicked him violently in the back.
Stunned, he’d jolted forward, his glasses falling off and onto the ground
below. He had heard rather than seen them crack, breaking as his assailant had
stepped on them.
“Fucking little fairy freak,” the voice had
hissed as its owner wrestled Jax to the ground and held his arms behind his
back. “I saw you come in with that other faggot. You his bed warmer, then, you
little bitch?”
Jax had tried to fight back, to turn around
so he could land a good kick to the man’s balls and disable him that way, but
his assailant had been too strong. Instead, he’d found himself lifted to his
feet, swung around and slammed against the tree, knocking the breath out of
him. Then an arm had been pressed against his throat as invectives spewed forth
in a never-ending vitriol filled with hate and filth.
Jax had zoned out. Memories of being
beaten, kicked, spat on and threatened by his stepbrother Terry had come flooding
